To feel genuine grief over a TV series ending?

maytocay · 10/03/2023 21:51

I've lost my own DC before so I'm familiar with taking the term 'grief' too literally here

But it does feel like a genuine, sad loss.

I'm not even finished the final series yet... there are 6 series and I'm on the final one Sad

I feel so sad I won't get to carry on escaping to this TV series every time I watch it. I'll miss it all so much

AIBU? Has anyone else felt similar over a series?

I really enjoyed this show too, finished it last weekend and I'm still feeling a bit empty without it ☹️

Better Call Saul, that is!

Ontobetterthings · 11/03/2023 03:07

I'm off to watch Yellowstone and Gilmore girls

Blondewithredlips · 11/03/2023 03:16

For me it was Homeland

Daisychainsandglitter · 11/03/2023 05:43

Mine was Ashes to Ashes. I loved that series.

EarringsandLipstick · 11/03/2023 06:25

Even though it certainly wasn't a 'warm & fuzzy' series, I was bereft after Ozark - though for once they did a great job of properly finishing a series.

It was such an excellent series, with superb acting. Dark AF of course (and somewhat ruined cuddly Jason Bateman for me) but so brilliant. The ending was kind of perfect & tantalising, all at once.

A few people have recommended Happy Valley. I take it it's worth a watch then?

Yes definitely,I was completely oblivious to it alk.untill.a few weeks but it's really good .

Peachy2005 · 11/03/2023 11:53

@XelaM Yellowstone is quite violent, just to warn you…I always had the impression Heartland would be quite family-friendly. Can’t recommend it enough. The prequel series 1923 is also gripping, it’s not necessary to watch in order though. I’ve only watched a little of the pre-prequel 1893 and it was also excellent, I’ll go back to it.

Downtown Abbey Sad

Currently being repeated on ITV3 on each night and then the episodes repeated on Sunday afternoon. Never watched 1st time around but watched last 2 series when they repeated it last year. Gutted I didn't see the 1st couple episodes as didn't realise it was being repeated again.

minou123 · 11/03/2023 12:19

I know exactly what you mean @maytocay

For me it's the Last Kingdom. I was so sad when I finished all the Seasons.

Although I have a little bit of excitement because the film is due to be released in April.

Mary46 · 11/03/2023 12:22

Yes op when Downton ended as other fans will agree! So good

JudgeJ · 11/03/2023 12:26

I recall being very sad with the end of The West Wing, loved it, it was like watching American Politics 101, been very useful for pub quizes.
Not looking forward to the end of Endeavour but at least we know he doesn't die.

For me, Homeland finished after Brodie died, after that it became very prosaic.

My dh will only watch Homeland after Brody leaves, such is his annoyance with his 'stupid face'.

Heartland is definitely family-friendly, but it's excellent and soooo addictive.

Noooooooo!!! I HATED the ending of Ozark! It ruined everything for me and was so unnecessary. To be honest, I really didn't like the whole last season. The first two seasons was some of the best TV I have ever seen though (next to Breaking Bad and Succession). The last season and ending completely destroyed it though.

IDontWantToBeAPie · 11/03/2023 16:16

Watch Bridgerton if you like historical dramas. Or Outlander. Or Lilia Poet.

LlynTegid · 11/03/2023 16:17

Yes I agree it can leave a sad and emotional feeling.

A lot of men and some women could be about to feel it if the BBC decide to continue Match of the Day without Gary Lineker. Alongside anger at the corporation chaired by a mate of the wife beater’s son Boris Johnson.

Just done Better Call Saul in about 3 weeks. I feel so dramatically like "I'll never live without them all" it's absurd. At heart it's such a beautiful love story which isn't what I expected of it at all.

DH and I were/are big Breaking Bad fans and started watching Better Call Saul when it first aired, so we watched it (one episode a week - so cruel of them!) over 7 years.

It's the best show I have ever seen and I definitely felt grief after the final episode. I had a real feeling of dread in the pit of my stomach and it affected my sleep for a couple of nights Blush

DH and I were just saying that it feels weird knowing there's no new Saul coming this year - I don't know what I'll do with my Tuesday nights now!

ImAGoodPerson · 11/03/2023 16:40

I totally understand this feeling. I definitely become attached to characters and feel quite sad when a long running series finishes. There have been a few that have made me feel that way. Same for series of books.

Peachy2005 · 11/03/2023 16:40

@XelaM I’ll have a look for Heartland tx

aloris · 11/03/2023 16:55

I feel the same. I get attached to imaginary people in tv series. Very strange.

I'm the same OP. Feels like I'm saying goodbye to good friends. I've not finished Schitts's Creek, Friends, Breaking Bad, and most probably not Succession either - so they're still there. My DH thinks I'm slightly nuts!

I still cry at the last episodes of Friends and Schitts Creek.

I actually always watch a bit of SC in bed before going to sleep, I must have looped around about 10 times by now, but it's such good comfort tv and you notice new things every time.

EarringsandLipstick · 12/03/2023 16:30

The last season and ending completely destroyed it though.

Really?! 😃 that's so interesting. I thought it was that rare beast, a series that stayed good throughout.

I mean, I hated most of them by the end but it was so good.

I did also kind of hate the ending but still thought it was brilliant, dramatically

mrswhiplington · 12/03/2023 16:55

For everyone who loved Schitt's Creek, there's a programme on Apple TV, if you've got it, that you might like. It stars Eugene Levy, called the Reluctant Traveller. It's a documentary about him on his travels to different countries. He hates being out of his comfort zone and it's a great watch, really funny.
