To feel genuine grief over a TV series ending?

maytocay · 10/03/2023 21:51

I've lost my own DC before so I'm familiar with taking the term 'grief' too literally here

But it does feel like a genuine, sad loss.

I'm not even finished the final series yet... there are 6 series and I'm on the final one Sad

I feel so sad I won't get to carry on escaping to this TV series every time I watch it. I'll miss it all so much

AIBU? Has anyone else felt similar over a series?

Yes, bones and lie to me
On criminal minds series 3 and Gideon just left!! Not happy about it!
And yes Karev in greys anatomy and inwasnt happy about Christina leaving either

HappyMouse · 10/03/2023 22:28

I felt exactly the same about Downton Abbey and still miss it. I'm going to start it again. It was complete escapism for me and just really lovely. We would watch two episodes every Monday. I felt sad through the last series knowing it was going to be over and I still can't watch the last movie as I don't want it to end.

Not a tv series, but I did feel a sense of grief when a character left a series after 10 years - in a ridiculous way that completely undermined their whole character development and recent storylines.

Same as you, it left a bit of a hole (I haven’t bothered to watch the series since - can’t be bothered to remain invested when the writers are going to do that sort of thing). I also won’t rewatch as a lot of this character development was about them making promises to stay to their other half so it’s all a bit nonsensical now.

So, I no longer watch my favourite TV show and it’s definitely left a gap.

Never felt like that about any other tv series, and am aware it comes across as a bit ‘deranged’ but 🤷🏼‍♀️

That sounds like you're talking about Alex Karev from Grey's Anatomy.... but he was on the show for 16 years, not 10, before he left. If it was him, he had a mental health crisis, quit and refused to film any more scenes - the writers were screwed and had to come up with something quickly, but still allowed the character to come back - but could also potentially be a permanent departure. I've seen suggestions that he could have been written off to go help his mother... but I don't think that would have been fair to Jo, as she'd have been left married to him with him never there.

Aw man, I loved Downton! Haven't watched it for years. Are you Team Mary or Team Edith OP?

Well, this is quite the question!

Love Mary, respect her character a lot. But my soft side for Edith came out with regards to little Marigold, her daughter. She really came into her own when she had her 🥺

Just saw a different show/character! Sorry!

You felt like that with Gilmore Girls. I may just watch them from the start again because I can’t find anything else that sucks me in!

Me too
It makes me want to live there!

feellikeanalien · 10/03/2023 22:31

I definitely felt like that about Downton OP. I do binge watch it occasionally when I need a feel good programme.

When I was a child I absolutely loved Colditz and I found an old diary the other day where I'd said how sad I was when it ended. There weren't any box sets then either so once it was finished that was it!

Which series?
My guess is This is Us ?

Am still grieving

Imthegingerbreadwoman · 10/03/2023 22:31

I get sucked into some series. Like an escape from reality. Definitley a crash when it's over

Verbena17 · 10/03/2023 22:32

@maytocay yes - I’m currently rewatching The Vampire Diaries - all 8 seasons and I’m on Season 7. Will feel rather lost once I’ve finished season 8.

Also Outlander. I feel bereft after each new season and whilst I’ve purposely not been reading the books, I really don’t ever want it to end - but it will sadly.

Dinersaur · 10/03/2023 22:33

When Michael left The US Office 😭

JamSandle · 10/03/2023 22:34

Yes! Feels like the characters and the world almost become friends.

Ihateboris · 10/03/2023 22:35

Omg, when Sons of Anarchy ended I just felt numb. 😭 I remember feeling really depressed the following day . I really need to get a life 😩

Whattodo121 · 10/03/2023 22:36

I was bereft when a certain character was killed in The Good Wife and when Mc Dreamy was no more in Greys. Have never been able to watch either of them since despite being completely hooked previously. I also completely adored the Gilmore Girls.

SingingWaffleDoggy · 10/03/2023 22:36

@Imthegingerbreadwoman yes to Bones!

@PacificallyRequested Team Mary, Edith was irritating. Although, I winced at some of Mary’s bitchiness towards her

The other one is New Amsterdam. I finished a couple of weeks ago and I haven’t found the same warm and fuzzy, story per episode but with ongoing character development easy watcher yet

Imthegingerbreadwoman · 10/03/2023 22:37

Yes many characters who left greys upset me!

Imthegingerbreadwoman · 10/03/2023 22:38

Derrick shouldn't have died!

Chickenkeev · 10/03/2023 22:39

Yes, The West Wing for me.

Dontsayyouloveme · 10/03/2023 22:39

oh my… I had this last year… I actually put off watching the final series of the show I watched. As I couldn’t bear the thought of it ending! I was devo’d when I finally did watch it, I had to just start watching it all over again.

I had this a lot when I was young too… over daft kids Saturday morning programmes… but I’ve always struggled with ‘loss’ and ‘endings’ so I thought it was just me..

Riverlee · 10/03/2023 22:40

Hadn’t watched Neighbours for years, but felt sad during the ‘last’ episode (I know it’s coming back) So much so that dc walked through the room, and I shouted at him to go away so I could watch it in peace.

Imthegingerbreadwoman · 10/03/2023 22:41

When I finish a series I feel like I missed my calling to be a surgeon/profiler/fbi agent/ forensic anthropologist....

I don't get out much! 🤣

moviesanddonuts · 10/03/2023 22:41

Yes! I was having this conversation just today… there are a few series that that ended years ago that I still get sad over when I think about not being able to escape into that world. I also genuinely miss the characters

Butterkistfiend · 10/03/2023 22:41

Yes, felt exactly that with Homeland, felt like it saw me through most of adulthood and just when I thought it was done, they’d do another series. Was genuinely sad when I finally watched the last, ever episode, like the end of an era.

Likewise, The (U.K.) Office, Suits and a weird one but Our Yorkshire Farm.

mymeatballsmymeatballs · 10/03/2023 22:41

I feel like this with a lot of shows including Downton! It's so good. You've got the movies to watch aswell though right?😊

MobyJeff · 10/03/2023 22:41

Mine is not even something I like particularly.

During lockdown and the covid shitshow I lost my husband. My “friends” showed their true colours by just walking away. Except one young woman colleague who suggested that we watched a rubbish American tv show together (apart iyswim). The final series airs in the uk soon, and I am in a much better place. She is about to embark on an amazing international career, and I am eternally grateful to both her and the rubbish tv show. But sad that an era is ending.
