To feel genuine grief over a TV series ending?

I've lost my own DC before so I'm familiar with taking the term 'grief' too literally here

But it does feel like a genuine, sad loss.

I'm not even finished the final series yet... there are 6 series and I'm on the final one Sad

I feel so sad I won't get to carry on escaping to this TV series every time I watch it. I'll miss it all so much

AIBU? Has anyone else felt similar over a series?

I was bereft when a certain character was killed in The Good Wife and when Mc Dreamy was no more in Greys. Have never been able to watch either of them since despite being completely hooked previously. I also completely adored the Gilmore Girls.

Me too, re the Good Wife. It was so genuinely shocking, and the way grief was portrayed was poignant & real.

That was a series I was so sad to see finish. And That Death kind of ruined it.

I'm rewatching atm & it still holds up well.

Try Parenthood for your Lauren Graham fix :)

Omg I LOVED Parenthood!! It's one of the best series of all time for me

Me too. It was schlocky in parts but I still loved it.

Sontagsleere · 10/03/2023 22:57

Nobody has mentioned ER - is it just me?

Yeah I wish Buffy could have gone on forever. Have just finished watching it all through again for the first time since it was televised.

I’ve watched Buffy so many times that now in my mind it doesn’t end, it just permanently loops 🤣

AlbertCampion · 10/03/2023 22:58

This was Offspring for me. Still can't think about it without getting sad. I loved it so much - even the shit final series.

TheLadyofShalott1 · 10/03/2023 23:01

"The A Word". I felt bereft when it came to an end.
I have watched the spin off which is OK (sorry, I can't remember it's name), but it is the main character of the "A" Word, the little boy, that I really loved. I wrapped him in my heart, and I still really miss him.

Apart from that, I usually have that problem with books. Odd Thomas, written by Dean Koontz, was, and is, my most missed character from a book. We had a lot of notice about the last book in the series, but I still cried my eyes out when I finished it.

I felt ridiculously sad at the end of Desperate Housewives where it ends with them all moving away and then we find out that they had all intended to meet up in the future, and never did. It just seemed a shame after everything they went through together ...

afty · 10/03/2023 23:06

(not to mention the horrible, sudden death of a major character in the same season!)

Batiqueattic · 10/03/2023 23:06

Just done Better Call Saul in about 3 weeks. I feel so dramatically like "I'll never live without them all" it's absurd. At heart it's such a beautiful love story which isn't what I expected of it at all.

Imthegingerbreadwoman · 10/03/2023 23:08

Yes desperate housewives was another!

Addiction to Downton is not unusual (I too am a sufferer) and the only cure is to take a week off watching other things then start again from the beginning looking out for details and nuances that you missed first time. There's a certain weird pleasure in knowing exactky what's going to happen next too.

The first time I watched it I missed the Brancaster episode so when Bertie and Henry popped up I had no idea where they'd come from.

MeinKraft · 10/03/2023 23:13

I was SO SAD when Downton finished. It was part of my Sunday night routine for years. Every Sunday I'd visit my grandparents, come home, iron all the clothes for the week (this was pre DC) then get a Chinese and watch DA. I even had the Downton Christmas music CD in the car Blush Sunday nights really haven't been the same since. Poldark helped a bit, and the two Downton films. This feeling does pass quite quickly but some programmes, books and films do keep a special place in your heart!

I am pretty consumed by Yellowstone at the moment and think I will feel like this when we finish it.

Game of Thrones. How I missed the characters in that. The theme you gives.me shivers.

Oh yes! When I started watching House of the Dragon and realised they used the theme I was like Shock

Of those who did watch the Downtown Abbey ending - was anyone else disappointed with how everything ended? I absolutely loved the series but I didn't like how they ended it.

The new film gives it a really satisfying ending IMO.

beethecrackon24995 · 10/03/2023 23:17

Thirty Something. Omg when Gary died I was genuinely upset. I loved that character. I rewatch every few years or so. Its very dated but still wonderful 😊😊😊

afty · 10/03/2023 23:19

I really didn't like the first Downton Abbey movie - some bits were over-done and came across like a caricature - the second film is better

Have only seen the first one and I agree, I didn't like it.

In the series I was really disappointed with what they decided to do with Mary's character in the last season.

It was rubbish. The second was great though. I mean there were massive daft plot holes but thats just in keeping with Downton tradition Grin

I found out that Karev left GA, and I stopped watching it before I got there. So now in my mind, he never left. I haven’t been able to make myself watch any further.

i loved DA, and the Gilded Age is great, as is Bridgerton. I love mist period dramas, and am always upset when a series of Call the Midwife ends.

my guilty pleasure is Virgin River, I know I’ll be gutted when that’s done, or they kill off someone important…

sobercuriouskind · 10/03/2023 23:36

This is us ... genuine grief, that ending just will stay with me forever. I was a complete mess for days.
Breaking Bad I felt like I was going to really miss the characters.
Sons of Anarchy packed a punch too.

Fluffawuffla · 10/03/2023 23:39

We’ve just finnished Yellowstone and feel like this. It consumed our lives for about a month. Absolutely excellent and I’m gutted it’s ended.

Is Yellowstone similar to Heartland?

Is Yellowstone similar to Heartland?

And if you haven't seen Heartland and want to watch another series about a family who own a ranch for many generations - it's so addictive and there are 15 seasons to get through 😂
