Reincarnation and multiple lives - if you believe this what does it mean

Pleasekeepmycoffeehot · 10/03/2023 20:40

Just for fun really, as I don't believe in reincarnation. The idea of it is so fucking tiring! When I'm dead I want peace and quiet and a rest Grin the thoughts of starting the whole thing again is quite draining...

But, if you have an interest in this stuff, what do our hardships mean in the present life? Is it all something to do with karma and about lessons we need to learn this time round?

Is it like - we start off with 'easy' lives to begin with, and build our experience, and our lives get progressively harder until we reach enlightenment?

Or the opposite! Do we start off with 'harder' lives - and then they get easier the more we work our way through multiple lives? Kind of like a career pathway where you get really experienced and do more challenging things later on lol. And get to enlightenment that way?

And then is there something about karma biting us on the ass/ bad stuff happening as punishment in this life for stuff we fucked up last time round? Hmmm, that seems a bit victim-blamey.

What way does it work? Who has read about this or has any thoughts?

We all experience the world differently. Some people for example are colour blind or don't have standard proprioception or sensory standards like supertasters who others will view as eating bland food.

There seem to be people who believe in the tangible world and they aren't the kind of people who readily will have accepted things like infrared upon discovery.

There are people who believe in the spiritual, they can range from believe in souls running around from body to body and living body less in-between in one lifetime, getting trapped or changing sex and the body owner has no control - to reincarnation one soul one body one lifetime - to demonic possession, fallen angel souls jumping into a body with a human soul, sharing it and trying to take over.

We will not know until death who was right or wrong.

I always think of the insects. They live on the same planet as we do, and presumably they are unaware of human life. They are not equipped to understand it.

I love this perspective @Tinypetunia ! I'd never thought of it from this angle before. Ants truly don't consciously know humans exist, so who are we to say there are things/beings/planes we can't perceive too.

I remember David Attenborough saying something similar about lifting the top from an ant hill and that the ants have no idea he is there and saying that he can't say for sure that there is no higher being he is unaware of, so I guess that was him saying he is agnostic?

I am a believer in reincarnation. DS used to talk about many a past life.
I don't remember mine but I know I have learnt all I need to know and am not coming back again. F*ck that.
I shall stay in heaven and drink milk and eat honey. I will perhaps become an angel or a spirit guide for those who are brave enough to try again.

Also, I have a theory that when people see psychic mediums or go to spiritualist church and say 'I want to hear from my DM who died' but they never come through, it's because they've already been recycled and are back on the earth plane. Obviously, I have no proof for this theory, but to my little tired brain, it's the only thing that makes sense.

mamabear715 · 12/03/2023 09:38

Ah, @scryingeyes - your last paragraph doesn't take into account that time here on earth is very different to the Heavenly realm. They can be here, they can be there.. :-0
I can't explain it, it would take someone much cleverer than I am, but it's true. I love your 'recycling' though! :-)

Proof of Heaven

Dr Eben Alexander

Read it

I was going to write exactly the same! Proof of heaven and map of heaven. Great books.

Yes...Another way to look at it is the "flatland" thought experiment by Carl Sagan. Imagine all human beings living in a two dimensional flatland - on a paper. A third dimension would appear as a cross section - one wouldn't be able to see the whole three dimensions, or would perceive them partially, concluding them to be magical or unbelievable.

Good Lord, what I'm most taken away from this thread is how hard and miserable people seem to find their lives!

but you won't be aware of being dead or the nothingness. That's the point; it's not like you are in an empty, silent room, you have no conscious awareness

That's what terrifies me, that I wont exist anymore and my brain cant comprehend that. I have always had a very difficult time accepting this and it's a fairly common fear.

You know when your a bit pissed and you fall asleep? I reckon it will be a bit like that. Sorry to go all low brow but I really don't think the actual point of death will register much.

The hardest thing for me is feeling sad for all the good times with friends and family that I'll never experience again. I try not to think about it.

I want to believe in reincarnation, as the life I have now is shit. I would like the chance to try again as someone else.
The thought of eternal life somewhere as me feels me with dread.

^This no one ever has convinced me about what could possibly be heavenly about heaven.

I grew up a Catholic. It was simply beyond my level of faith how anyone could find heaven a place that any person could ever want to be. I mean an eternity with every generation of your family heavenly that doesn’t sound.

Anyone here like Abraham Hicks or has read Seth Speaks?

... probably not Grin

Yes! I spent quite some time exploring things like this.

I tend to be very logical, but there are some aspects of life (and death) that I have very different “logical” opinions to others. Discovering Abraham Hicks a couple of years ago felt like coming home and relearning something I didn’t know I’d forgotten.

Since listening regularly there are aspects of my life - my mental health and family issues mainly - that have fallen easily into place and sorted themselves out. I am much more positive and optimistic, and have been told several times that I’m now lovely to be around (obviously I was an arsehole before Grin). I rarely get anxious, when my anxiety literally ruled my life.

I try to meditate daily, which has been amazing and very weird at times. The theory of source and fitting this in with other works that explore the origins of religion and how it became about power and control over people rather than freedom and happiness (as was originally intended, depending on your beliefs) are incredibly interesting. It’s being able to have faith without the religious dogma and coercion in the background, which I find very comforting.

When you die, you'll go back to exactly where you were before you were born.

I find this comforting - you're not going somewhere new, you're returning.

ifyougochasingrabbits · 14/03/2023 21:40

I believe in it 😳

PriscillaQueenOfThePudding · 14/03/2023 21:46

Most of the world believe in reincarnation, the only religion never to have included it as a concept is Islam. It’s also a common theory among non religious people.

Yes I've tried to think of it like this but I feel like before I was born I wasnt "me" yet and had no consciousness so I cant really process it that way. Unfortunately I think about it far too much and it winds me every so often to think about leaving my child and that at any point it could all be over. I try and think of it as that means there is everything to play for but in reality life is mostly keeping on top of the laundry and watching Netflix 🙈😂

doritstew · 14/03/2023 22:37

I used to believe in this stuff when I was younger. And sometimes I try to believe in it now, as a 30 year old woman. But anytime I read or watch anything on this subject, reincarnation/heaven etc, I just know in my bones that we are biological beings and nothing more. When our bodies die, our soul does too. Forever. There is nothingness, just like before you were born. Nothingness forever. The earth began due to science. We are science, facts, I can say with certainty, that when we die, we die. We are gone, there is nothing. I have honestly tried to believe there is something else but I just know in my bones there isn't.

I always find it interesting when people say anything is “because of science” science is defined as “the systematic study of the structure and behaviour of the physical and natural world through observation, experimentation, and the testing of theories against the evidence obtained.” it’s a method.

I find your post intriguing. You “feel it in your bones” that we are “biological beings” how does that work? “I can say with certainty that when we die we die” how can you say that? A feeling? A belief?

the Earth did not begin due to science, unless it was the science of a god. It began due to laws of nature which bind our universe, here the question is both how and why were these laws created? At this stage all we seem to have is God was/is playing dice within the rules of the game.of the universe.

if I was you I’d be asking myself what barriers you’re erecting that leaves you with seeming lily incongruous thoughts, and why? you seem to think you’re grown up now and must leave these childish thoughts behind.

you might be right about the Nothing though, in some traditions that nothing is the source of everything

mamabear715 · 15/03/2023 07:46

@doritstew I'd love to see proof of your 'certainty'!
We are energy. That energy remains. See you in Heaven!

2022again · 15/03/2023 09:33

i believe both in the factual science, evolution etc etc but also that at the route of everything is energy - it's possible to both be a scientist and have a belief in the soul. Part of what I loved working in healthcare was the connection with people and that part of them that is more than their physical, unwell, dying body. I was privileged to hear about peoples near death experiences and to see the certainty in an afterlife that these experiences had given them....but also I know some people never have the experience of a connection with their spiritual self (my DH included!), others have a belief that they then lose in later life ...but ultimately I don't feel anyone can know for certain until they have died themselves. Perhaps those people that never get a chance to explore their spiritual selves with be coming back around for another try!

Absolutely, we’re all at different stages on our spiritual journey. I don’t know where people get the idea of spirituality and science being incompatible they are entirely compatible and complementary. I think people get confused about taking organised religion at face value snd science

GreenyAnnie · 16/03/2023 20:27

@doritstew the way you articulated your objections sound like scientism (belief in science) not actual science. I recommend Dean Radins books. He's a scientist who studied supernatural phenomena using statistical models.
