Reincarnation and multiple lives - if you believe this what does it mean

Just for fun really, as I don't believe in reincarnation. The idea of it is so fucking tiring! When I'm dead I want peace and quiet and a rest Grin the thoughts of starting the whole thing again is quite draining...

But, if you have an interest in this stuff, what do our hardships mean in the present life? Is it all something to do with karma and about lessons we need to learn this time round?

Is it like - we start off with 'easy' lives to begin with, and build our experience, and our lives get progressively harder until we reach enlightenment?

Or the opposite! Do we start off with 'harder' lives - and then they get easier the more we work our way through multiple lives? Kind of like a career pathway where you get really experienced and do more challenging things later on lol. And get to enlightenment that way?

And then is there something about karma biting us on the ass/ bad stuff happening as punishment in this life for stuff we fucked up last time round? Hmmm, that seems a bit victim-blamey.

What way does it work? Who has read about this or has any thoughts?

That's mad and fascinating.

What period did past you live in, what were your clothes like? Did you remember anything about the relationship with your spouse, like if you loved them?

I lived in Massachusetts and was born in the late 1600s and was male.

As soon as I was regressed, I looked down at my feet and I will never forgot seeing those shoes…they were long, rather pointed and black. Really like nothing I had seen before.

My wife died young, and I had two daughters who were married and I remember an overwhelming feeling and sense of loneliness.

I know this sounds ridiculous (hence the name change) but it’s exactly what happened, and I am
now quite curious to listen back to the recording again.

Pleasekeepmycoffeehot · 10/03/2023 22:48

That's really interesting, NotSoBigCrocodile.

Your description of your wife dying and the loneliness is very poignant.

I believe in reincarnation but I can’t really explain why it’s just a feeling I have.
I find it really hard to imagine that we only get one go.

i don’t think it’s related to karma though.
I think if you are evil in this life you don’t get another seat at the table.

I read the Bhagavad Gita many years ago and my remembering of it is that the dehin (embodied being) needs to experience every possible human condition before it transcends. This takes many lifetimes playing many different roles.

I like this theory a lot because when I'm going through extreme life events I just think it's my soul learning about the human condition. It always makes me feel better, like I'm the vessel for the experience rather than 'woe is me', 'why is this happening'.
I don't particularly believe that this is definitely what is happening but the thought of it stops me going under, helps me stay rational and reminds me that people are going through a million different scenarios simultaneously and life is up and down, ebbing and flowing, constantly in flux.

I found this thought-provoking, having Buddhist tendencies.

Fantastic perspective. 🥰

I'm interested to know at what point the reincarnation takes place. Is it:

  • When sperm meets egg
  • At a specific point in the development of the foetus or pre-sentient infant
  • At the moment of birth
  • At a random point between conception and the infant becoming fully sentient

Also, what is the time lapse? If looking for past incarnations, should you focus on people who died around the time you were conceived/born - or could there be a time lapse so your year of conception/birth is irrelevant?

I’ve named changed for this because it doesn’t sound very believable, but…

I had a past life regression session done years ago and it was recorded and given to me on disc.

It was incredibly vivid and I gave many details during the session - my name, where I lived, when I was born, my spouse’s name, what lessons I had learned during this lifetime etc. I gave descriptions of my home and what clothing I was wearing. I was no one of importance.

I listened back to the recording and done some research. There was a person by the name I had given, who was born on the date I gave, in the place I was living. The clothing and house I described were typical of those from that period in time. My spouse’s name was the same.

I’ve never really thought about it again until now. I don’t really know what to make of it.

I watched a TV documentary about this. The people claiming to have had past lives were strikingly physically similar to the people they allegedly were in those past lives. They basically had the same faces - it was fascinating.

Did you find a photo of this past person to compare, or was it too far back, ie pre-photography?

Crunched · 11/03/2023 02:39

I couldn't really say I believe in reincarnation or multiple lives, but I do imagine that when we die, the atoms that made up our body will somehow rejoin the life of this planet and be part of other life.

blebbleb · 11/03/2023 03:00

I really hope reincarnation isn't a thing. I don't want to be someone else or be born into a life of suffering. Once is enough.

Wooooooo · 11/03/2023 06:57

How so?

Why should we be so arrogant to assume we know all? That humans have acquired as much knowledge as they ever will?
We all, for whatever reason, have our own beliefs, I would not insult those whose beliefs are different to mine, so please, respect goes both ways.

Fuwari · 11/03/2023 07:43

When my son was a toddler and started talking he told me he was meant to go to someone else but “chose” me instead. He never really said much more than that about it, but was adamant that was the case. He forgot about it as he got older though.

I wouldn’t say I believe anything. There are multiple theories which could be true, we can’t know. I suppose I am open minded to what happens when we die. I had a horrible childhood, so the idea of having another go with a nice childhood is somewhat appealing. But if I got that I’d have no memory of the past awful one so I guess I’d just take it for granted!

TuesdayJulyNever · 11/03/2023 08:07

The problem I have with most schools of religious thought is that you start with an improbable but deeply attractive idea like reincarnation or heaven, etc, and then apply logic and reason after the fact and inevitably end up with dulled compassion.

Suffering, whether it’s in this world or the next, can be brushed off as karma, or the wages of sin; ultimately the fault of the victim.

I’d rather believe that our efforts to alleviate suffering and right injustice in this life matter.

I quite like the idea of reincarnation - I feel like I’ve known my dh and ds in other lives. I just don’t want to think too much about it.

OnlyFannys · 10/03/2023 20:45

I would like to believe in reincarnation because the idea of death and nothingness terrifies me but sadly I dont

but you won't be aware of being dead or the nothingness. That's the point; it's not like you are in an empty, silent room, you have no conscious awareness

Craftycorvid · 11/03/2023 08:25

When very young children spontaneously start talking about when they were here ‘before’ and can be precise with details, I find that fascinating. I don’t know if it’s evidence in support of past lives or not, but it feels more convincing than the results of adult past life regression experiences. Mature adults have forgotten and filed away hundreds of impressions from books, conversations, films etc, so any ‘recall’ is liable to be more like a dreaming and altered memory state than anything more significant. We may think it’s amazing and that we must have been that person in another time and place because we have so much detail to supply, but we might have read or otherwise found out about that and lost the conscious memory of doing so.

queenMab99 · 11/03/2023 08:36

I believe we are here to learn, and improve, so, to me, it doesn't matter whether we come back in another life. If you look at every situation as a chance to learn and improve, it makes it easier to bear when things are bad.
If we all try to raise our level of consciousness, the over all level will increase, and the world will be a better place to live.

Sunriseinwonderland · 11/03/2023 08:39

reincarnation is a core belief in my religion but I can't even think about it I am totally exhausted with this life.

Christ my worst nightmare.. living everyone's lives. Living all those horrific deaths in auschwitz etc no thanks this video is very disturbing

frozenyoghurtyurt · 11/03/2023 12:20

Yes, I do. I don't have any real reasoning for it. I just don't feel that our souls, our spirits, disappear with our physical bodies. The essence of who we are.

I can fully believe that I knew my mum in a previous life, but with roles reversed. I have always been the adult more than she has. I really hope I get something easier next time. This life has been traumatic.

You won't know. Just like you don't know now. You might be on your 123rd life!

When (usually older) people look at a baby and say 'he's been here before' it makes me feel warm inside. I don't know why really. I don't necessarily believe in it but I do find it comforting. Old souls, and all that.

I lean more towards believing this than in any particular religion or god. It just feels like it makes more sense. I have no idea how on earth the process would work though! Someone asked earlier at what moment in time does the soul transfer into a new body - perhaps the point of your earliest memory? So for me it would have been whilst I was trailing my should on the floor in my buggy and my mum kept putting them back on the plastic foot belt thing. Then I'd trail them again cause I liked the vibration through my shoes.

Like I said, I don't wholeheartedly believe in it but it's my favourite spiritual theory by far and I love speculating about it.

blebbleb · 11/03/2023 14:48

@Itdoesnthavetobejusrol I personally don't believe it. Yes I wouldn't know if I lived before but that's sad to me. Your whole past lives just erased from your memory until you die again. You could be born into a life of slavery, suffering and abuse next time. It's as plausible as any theory but like a previous poster said where do all these new souls come from? I certainly hope it's not true and would opt out if that's a thing. Perhaps I'm just attached to this life!

blebbleb · 11/03/2023 14:50

I would choose nothingness rather than be born over and over!
