Tiny car with kids?!

AIBU to want a Fiat 500e as my first car when I have one 1.5 year old daughter and want more kids in the future?!

Fwiw my husband has a family sized car so this would be a second, I'm only 5'3 and he's 5'9 ☺️

Are sure you can get a trolly full of shopping in the boot, and check your pushchair fits. I have a fiat cinquecento when my dcs were little and it was a pain in the bum, always had to put bags of shopping in the front seat. LOVED the car though, I could park it anywhere, spaces larger mortals wouldn’t try.

I have a VW Up and a 4 month old and it's the biggest PITA

Twinsforthewin · 09/03/2023 16:06

YANBU. Thank you for not getting an SUV. They should be banned in cities.

I've only ever had small cars, DH drives a bigger car. Please don't get a 3 door car with kids. I had a Yaris for most of the time my kids were small and it was fab but it was 5 door and the boot is sizeable. 3 would have been too much of a faff and for that reason I'd avoid the Fiat 500.

AgapanthusandAcers · 09/03/2023 16:15

I should have said the boot was sizeable for a small car. I could fit my pushchair in it.

We have 3dc, all in car seats, and have an old Clio as our 2nd car - it's a squeeze but it's fine. We could fit a full shop in the boot.

acuppatea · 09/03/2023 16:19

My MIL has a fiat 500 and I can't sit in the front with a car seat behind me - I'm 5'5"! And the boot is tiny.

I've had a VW Up and a Yaris, both were much bigger inside than the Fiat. I could get an axkid in the Up with a passenger in front.

Nope too small.

Personally I dont think it would be safe enough on a crash.

If I had young kids I'd want something safer.

And I definitely wouldn't ever go on a motorway in one.

We’ve had a tiny Citroen C1 for the last 11 years.

We got it when ds was 10. Then Dd was born and it was a nightmare with a pushchair in the back. Then we had another dc 3 years ago and since then we can’t all fit in the car at the same time. And it’s a pain in the arse with a booster seat and a rear facing toddler seat. Pushchair in the back leaves no room for anything else, dh does food shopping on his own as you couldn’t fit more than one shopping bag.

It’s lucky we can’t afford to go anywhere all together 😂 We did go out for a meal last year and We had to drop ds off first, then dh came back for the rest of us, then did the same for the return journey.

It’s a pain but we can’t afford to replace it.

If they fit in it, what's the problem? 😂

Can you fit buggies and other shite in the boot?

we changed to an estate car when kids arrived

This. You won't need an SUV or larger car because of kids. But estates would be perfect for buggies.

Before my Mini I had a Toyota IQ, I went on the motorway in it and I could fit my wheelchair in the boot.
I drive up and down motorways all the time in my Mini, why wouldn't I?

I’ve bought a KA (fiat 500 with different body work), its fine, two in the back in car seats (one rear facing) and two adults at the front. Its our second vehicle so we can tow it when we go away in our camper. We’ve been in a few trips in it as a family, done shopping etc and its fine.

I love my little fiat

We had a spectacularly impractical (but ever so stylish and fun) car when our kids were growing up.

So worth it.

Snickers94 · 09/03/2023 20:01

I'm after a small runaround that I can park easily. I was looking at the Hyundai i10, but the new model is less safe than the Fiat 500 so is a no go. I just love the look of the Fiat - my sister (no kids) has one and she loves it!

The i10 is the most gutless and uncomfortable car I've ever had the displeasure to drive. Absolutely do not recommend!

Have you looked at Fiestas, Golfs etc? Might be worth a few test drives. Looks are all very well, but I've discovered through hire cars that there are several cars I wouldn't willingly drive again let alone buy....
