Diet/fasting question

needtoloseastoneandahalf · 05/03/2023 00:52

I’m trying to diet and lose around a stone and a half. I actually do significantly above average amounts of exercise but I have no willpower with food and I’ve gained too much weight.

does anyone have any experience with fasting? I was thinking of doing alternate day fasts and on the days I don’t fast eating filling, healthy meals and then fasting the next day and alternating like that. Does anyone have any experience or advice with this- does it work? I started a few days ago and found it a lot easier than typical calorie deficit diets but not sure how useful it actually is with losing weight.

thanks!

I need to get back on it, but I had great success with intermittent fasting. My eating window was 10am-6pm.
There is a whole board dedicated to it on MN.

I do intermittent fasting. Eating between 2pm and 10pm only. Though ofter between 2pm and 8pm. I eating healthy filling meals sticking to an appropriate calorie deficit and have lost 1 stone in 7 weeks.

Oh that’s really interesting- do you think it would be better to do intermittent fasting and only eat within a certain window vs doing one day of eating, one day fasting etc?

I do that too... eat only between 12 - 7, and keep an eye on carbs.

Lost 1.5 stone in two months.
Don't worry about feeling hungry; you quickly get used to the eating time.

I need to get back to it, but had more success with intermittent fasting.
I can happily not eat breakfast, and having an absolute cut off of not eating after 8pm or whatever I find easier because it's an absolute.
Some guides say you can have tea/coffee etc after the fast window, others not.
I did, although I do have a tiny amount of milk in tea - still worked.

I've also been doing intermittent fasting.. 18/6 . It started by accident years ago because I have an active/sporty job and cant eat/digest food during a workday without feeling full sluggish and unable to work properly so I only eat between about 5-6pm and midnight.

I do this too

I would vote for trying this first for a few weeks to see how you feel.

Not all exercise is equal. Cardio, for example, will make you hungry so you need to be doing enough to burn hundreds of calories. Running for 30 minutes at comfortable pace is terrible for weight gain.

Exercise needs to be grim or it’s pointless, unless you’re maintaining.

Fasting alone for dieting not the best idea because you’ll be so fixated on the moment you get to indulge in excess, which is what made you fat in the first place.

Personally, it’s Keto that works for me. Turning carbs and sugars into the enemy is very clear to follow and it doesn’t stop you eating and I’ve actually found that after a few days that my appetite is gone which makes it so much easier.

It can be very bland if you’re lazy about it but I had a fry up yesterday and a huge curry today. I’m finding it hard to take in more than 800 calories I’m so not hungry.
