Gypsies and travellers

It seems a lot of people think these 2 groups are the same, they are not. I find it offensive that people lump us together.

Gypsies are not Irish

Irish travellers are not gypsies

YANBU but there are lots of groups under the Gypsy and Traveller umbrella and some of them are both gypsy AND traveller in the cultural tradition, “Scottish Gypsy Travellers” for instance.

JanusTheFirst · 04/03/2023 17:15

Irish travellers have no DNA in common with Roma.

I've never heard of a gypsy traveller, to my knowledge it's one or the other

Yy as the PP says, it's odd you're invested enough in this to start a thread but are actually unaware of the nuances of the different groups under the GRT heading.
It all feels a bit goady tbh.

How long until the racism starts?

(notices deleted post)

Oh, it has already.

GlassBunion · 04/03/2023 17:25

They are different.

Their lifestyles are different.
Therein lies the problem but you're not allowed to talk about it as you'll be accused of racism.

This thread will disappear very soon...

KatyKlanger · 04/03/2023 17:27

Ok, so say I meet a group that identifies as a group of Travellers.

What assumptions should I make about them?
Or might they be like every other group and are a mix of all sorts of likes, dislikes, personalities etc?

I just don't see how helpful "categorising" people is. It's like you're trying to educate us, but are you?

TheBestUsernamesAreGone · 04/03/2023 17:29

Frozendaquiri perhaps you could take some time to explain what the differences are, why the correct terminology matters (and maybe share some insights into your life if you feel comfortable doing so?)
People probably use the wrong words out of ignorance rather than malice so please feel free to make things more clear. Smile

The deleted post wasn't racism.

Thank you for starting this thread.
It is very interesting and it is lovely to hear a voice from your community.
Generations of my family have been blessed by having Gypsy and Traveller friends and we have had conversations about the difference that you have described.

FoxInSocksSatOnBlocks · 04/03/2023 17:35

Ok, you find it offensive. So what?

I'm more than happy to answer any questions:)

No expert on the history etc but general life of a gypsy I'm sure I can answer most things

I thought gypsy wasn't a term in common use anymore?

I think that's because people were using it as an insult

The deleted post absolutely was racism - the exact word I used when I reported it in fact.

To the person who made a nasty comment about my family’s friendship with The Gypsy and Travelling Community.
When my mother was 10 years old, she was left alone with her dying younger sister.
Their Mum had panicked and gone to her own Mother’s house.( she had MH issues)
My mother cared for her sister through the night until she passed away at dawn.
Terrified and alone she left the house to seek help.
A family of Travellers took her in to their caravan, they comforted her and made her breakfast, they handled to whole awful situation, including being present with the dead child.
As I child I grew up in poverty and a wonderful Gypsy Lady provided every item of clothing for me, my brothers and my sisters.
I am proud to have Traveller and Gypsy friends.
