To ask for medical advice

I know that am I am but just don't know what to do.

I cut my hand earlier this afternoon in a stupid accident. Thought it was a minor cut but it just won't stop bleeding.

No walk in centre at all. Gp is shut. So only scope for medical treatment is a&e. And absolutely don't want to go there.

But equally hand won't stop bleeding. Just soaking into a plaster.

Any advice

Ring 111. At our hospital they have a unit for 111 referrals. We also have an out of hours unit at our local gp Center that I knew nothing about til I needed to go!!

Apply pressure on the wound whilst you wait

NowAAT · 02/03/2023 18:43

Apply pressure and see if the bleeding stops

Can you post a picture?
Depending on size, I'd probably just tape it up tight.

Moraxella · 02/03/2023 18:46

How big and where?

MyFuckRationsAreDepleated · 02/03/2023 18:52

Even if the GP were open this is not a GP problem. Walk in or A&E if the bleeding doesn’t stop with pressure.

Dishwashersaurous · 02/03/2023 18:55

So I've taped it and wrapped plasters around it.

Definitely still leaking blood but not gushing anymore.

Is there anything that means I need to get it see to, or worried about?

I'm an ED nurse
Few important things - what did you cut it on (metal/knife/glass?)
Have you had a tetanus in the last 10 years?
Is it a large wound that looks like it could potentially need stitches?
Are you on blood thinners like warfarin or aspirin?

If you could post a picture that would be very helpful

Datafan55 · 02/03/2023 19:00

I'm sure not stopping bleeding is something the front page of our doctors always displays as a 'seek help now'.
Maybe depends how much?
Pressure and raise hand up above your heart.

Yes we have a secret GP out of hours too - it's only a few minutes away from me, very handy! Appts via 111. Or, as PP also said, 111 can give you a 'referral' to A&E. 111 do generally cover themselves if ANY doubt and send people to be seen.

No shame in going to A&E for minor treatment if it's appropriate. I posted on another thread the other day about having to go for an appropriate burn dressing last year - I'm not sure the type of dressing A&E put on is even available in the shops, and nothing else was working.

Not on blood thinners?
Any low platelet levels?
