Vaping in schoold

Vaping in schools is becoming a huge problem. AIBU to think that something really needs to happen to stop this?
For example..
Vapes should be sold discreetly like cigarettes to make them less appealing. They have fruity flavours, cool names etc. It is almost like they are marketed like they are confectionery.
Also that Children should be threatened with suspension if caught vaping in school so there is a real deterrent to encourage them to stop.
Children as young as 12 are doing it.

I agree, it shouldn’t any more acceptable in school than smoking.

LostAtTheCrossRoad · 02/03/2023 11:03

Every school I know treats vaping exactly the same as smoking, the disciplinary process is identical.

Whatfreshhellisthisss · 02/03/2023 11:06

I think it shouldn’t just be left to the schools to discipline if caught, I think that the marketing of the product on the whole needs to be changed, the same as what happened with cigarettes, get them behind the counter under loch and key, no flashy packaging etc

It’s hard for schools to police.

Most schools will treat vaping at school or bringing a vape into school as a disciplinary matter. In the school I last worked at it was an automatic internal exclusion for first incident, fixed term exclusion for repeated incidents. We also did bag searches of year groups from time to time.

Unfortunately, the majority of girls hide their vape on their bra (I have on good authority from teen DD!).

Our toilets pretty much constantly stank of fruity / candy flavoured vaping. Toilets supervised by a member of staff outside at lunch and break and not a day passed when we didn’t have to haul out some kids, request a bag search, discipline for vaping etc.

Its definitely something government / regulators need to get on to. Shops sell them to underage kids and they are clearly marketed at teens in the way alcopops were when I was young.

Whatfreshhellisthisss · 02/03/2023 11:24

They are really easy to shoplift too, from those stands in supermarkets.
Parents providing them for their kids is also an issue.

Vapes were originally intended as a smoking cessation aid, but I don’t think anyone uses them as that now. They are just a different more socially acceptable way of getting a nicotine hit/fix.

StuffyHuffyPuffy · 02/03/2023 11:54

The assortment of flavours on offer is just ridiculous. I know this can help smokers consider vaping as an alternative to smoking, but children who would not have tried smoking now see vaping is a healthier, less harmful cool thing to do. There is no bombardment of negative messaging for e-cigarettes, like there is with smoking. We need to start with the negative campaigning against them, or start hiding them behind counters etc. Smokers would understand the shift, they have the context to know vaping is healthier than smoking. It's all just gotten so pathetic.

Smoking cessation used to be a part of my role, what you are seeing now is something my team had already thought would happen when we trialled e-cigarettes (with 3 flavours) as part of our service. I reported my thoughts to public health at the time.

A girl in my daughter's y7 class has just been put on temporary exclusion for vaping in class.

DNAshelicase · 02/03/2023 11:58

They smoke them during lessons in the toilets. Lots of threads and protests going on atm stating that going to the toilet whenever they want is their human right 🤷🏻‍♀️

Chickenly · 02/03/2023 11:58

Vaping is treated identically to smoking by schools. Unfortunately, parents give them to their children, kick off if schools confiscate them and also kick off when their precious little darling isn’t allowed to go to the toilet during lessons (for the fifth time that day) in order to vape. What are you actually expecting schools to do?

What I find funny is all the parents kicking off supporting their children in their “protest” without realising they’re only protesting because it’s a TikTok trend.

12 year olds?

There were some 9 yrs olds excluded in a school near me recently - vaping on the playground!

I think they should just be banned.

Smokers

Damned if they smoke cigs and damned if they try Vapers
Some of you people will never be bloody happy!

ellebelli · 02/03/2023 12:22

My 15yr old son has just been suspended for 2 days for vaping on the school bus.
Every time we have the argument he insists its harmless and not addictive!
Boys in his year have also brought in weed vapes.

PeekAtYou · 02/03/2023 12:23

Vape juice is small and easily shoplifted. I have seen the stands in pound shops and discount retailers and think that hiding them behind the counter would help.

Not sure how easy it is to buy online.

PeekAtYou · 02/03/2023 12:25

My child was caught vaping in school 5 years ago and rightly received a Saturday detention. If he wasn't in year 11 at the time it would have been 2 days suspension.

StuffyHuffyPuffy · 02/03/2023 12:26

This is the problem! We are letting people down by not re-addressing how we present e-cigarettes to the public. It is a great tool for smoking cessation, but it is also a cherry-scented path towards nicotine addiction for others who would not have ever smoked.

JemimaTiggywinkles · 02/03/2023 12:52

My school treats cigarettes and vapes identically for sanctions. It is much harder to eradicate though because parents (including naice middle-class ones) buy them for their teens.

Given vapes are a smoking cessation aid, perhaps we need to be more careful about where they are sold rather than banning them. They definitely shouldn't be available from stands in supermarkets, as that sends the message that they are akin to chewing gum or chocolate bars.

booboo82 · 02/03/2023 13:09

Well vapes were introduced to encourage smokers to switch to and give up fags but yeah that backfired didn't it 🤣🤣🤣 just be grateful they are only vaping at school and not properly smoking I suppose lol

When those smokers are children in a school, yes, they’re damned either way. It’s almost as if there’s the option to not smoke or vape in a school as a child 🙄
