to walk around bald?

Booblessbeauty · 02/03/2023 08:22

Is this socially acceptable for a woman?

I prefer when I am exercising to have my head bald, so for parkrun, etc I am already doing it

How about going to the shops, or getting on a bus, or going into a cafe with friends?

Is it OK to walk around totally bald do you think?

How would you view it? Would you do it?

My mum was bald for my wedding.. chemo. She wore a wig for the service because she wanted a proper hat but she went naked head for the after party. She looked fab and had a great time. Good on you for letting the bald head out. Hope the chemo goes well!

Anyone who sees a bald woman and thinks (or even says...) 'Ew, look at her, she's bald' is not a person whose opinions are worth bothering about.

Agreed! And I'm surprised at teen girls being so horrible. WTF.....who hurt them?

Thiswayorthatway · 02/03/2023 21:17

When I lost my hair due to chemo I went bald in public. Less people stared than I thought.

so glad you feel more confident op. I can also really recommend look good feel better charity which offers workshops on line and in person for makeup/ hair etc.

People will notice, it’s unusual and something out of the ordinary. But beyond that, if people have a negative reaction that’s on them… we have so much focus on looks in our society, particularly of women and from women, that bucking that trend may well cause people to react in weird ways. Those girls you mention are probably threatened by the thought that perhaps others don’t consider their looks to be paramount and their minds cannot fathom being able to go out bald with few fucks given. But you are bald, so that challenges them… and others…

Personally I’d rather have the sniggers than the fucking head tilt “poor you” looks tbh… and being bald was so much faster for showers and getting out the bloody house!! I didn’t mind being bald, other than having cancer of course which was a bit of a buzzkill… now I’ve a horrible lumpy head as I’ve grown sebaceous cysts so I’m glad I have hair for now.

Anyway @Booblessbeauty I am sure you are indeed a boobless and baldy beauty- so you keep rocking it 🤘🏻

JudgeRudy · 02/03/2023 21:29

It's unusual simply because most women aren't bald but there's nothing offensive or wrong about it.
I've got thick hair and I often fantasise in the summer about shaving it all off for comfort. It's like wearing a wooly hat, so hot!
I don't though because of vanity and because I have a choice. I think though if I'd lost my hair especially if it was through chemo I'd be in the zero fux club!

NeverDropYourMooncup · 02/03/2023 21:30

DP's opinion (for a change, it could actually be relevant, as he's been almost completely bald since he was 22 thanks to a combination of severe Psoriasis/alopecia followed close behind by early male pattern baldness) is that whilst it can feel nice at the time, it's very easy to get both sunburn and windburn at this time of year, which is incredibly painful, apparently.

He wears a hat (preferably one lined with silk) year round - you still need to both moisturise and apply sunblock, as there are larger areas exposed to the elements than normal due to the lack of hair - but only removes it when he is indoors. He did find it awkward at first, but he got used to it quite quickly once his skin wasn't so delicate from exposure to the sun and wind.

Because it's such sensitive and delicate skin, even baby shampoo can be too harsh - he uses emollient ointment when his skin is flaring, as it feels like it's on fire and bruised.

He also suggests that if you don't already, buying some really good quality sunglasses with a larger lens shape/size is important because eyebrows and lashes shade your eyes from a lot of daylight and glare from the pavement and windows and, as the days get brighter, it reduces the likelihood of headaches, sore eyes and sun/windburn on the eyebrows and lids.

Actually I dislike these kinds of charities that suggest that if we look good we will
feel better. Fuck off! Someone with cancer doesn’t need the added pressure off making sure they look good whilst having poison dripped into their veins on a regular basis. How many men are encouraged to work on their six packs or get hair transplants whilst on chemo? 🤔 Or is it only us women who should make sure we look out best whilst battling life limiting diseases…

Get well, feel better! Get treatment, feel better! Read books, feel better… do what you want to do and stop thinking that your looks are in any way related to your value or worth as a person… and feel better!

Rant over.

x2boys · 02/03/2023 21:32

If your comfortable with it than fine ,ignore.anybody else's reaction.

Veryverycalmnow · 02/03/2023 21:34

You sound great, OP. Wishing you well.

Greenfairydust · 02/03/2023 21:38

I am not receiving treatment but I have had thinning hair all my life. You can clearly see my scalp.

I wear a lot of hats/scarfs but right now I am so tempted to just shave it off and be done with it...

So I would say it is perfectly fine to walk around and do everything else bold!!

I loved going to the LGFB workshop, especially the advice on how to draw my eyebrows on properly without looking like a clown.

I didn't wear my wig much as it was soooo itchy. I bought some gorgeous missoni scarves and perfected the art of tying them. Essential when starting chemo in January. Then as it got warmer, I couldn't be bothered Just made sure my scalp was moisturised and sun screened.

I was still bald when I went back to work as an FE teacher and the kids could have been lovelier. One of my lovelies even did her business plan on a moisturiser for chemo heads 😂

weebarra · 02/03/2023 22:04

I never really wear make up, but I really liked my LGFB session, even if the name is a bit shite.
There were some useful tips, but it was just nice to have a break (cancer chat was not permitted!) and a laugh. Nine years on, I've still got some of the make up - shows how much I wear it!

Confusedmeanderings · 03/03/2023 02:01

Good for you @Booblessbeauty ! I had chemo last year to treat my breast cancer. I just don't have the right shaped head for scarves and turbans, they just ride up and end up looking ridiculous, so in the end I just went bald. It was hard at first, but the more you do it, the easier it gets. I even went to London to see Abba Voyage with a bald head! Go for it!

ashitghost · 03/03/2023 02:34

I was bald due to chemotherapy and being very honest I think it’s attention seeking. You are treated like a VIP everywhere you go as a bald woman. If you’re in the market for wanting attention then it’s a surefire way.

I see a bald headed woman and I don’t give a second glance let alone extra attention or sympathy.

I see a woman / man / child / animal looking ill, frail, sick - I think to myself “poor thing, you’re suffering” and yes - help them if I sensed I could do something

Clarinet1 · 03/03/2023 08:03

I think you’re great OP.
Do you remember the actress Persis Khambatta from the first Star Trek movie who had her head shaved for the role? Apparently she used to get lots of men coming up to her telling her how sexy it was!

I do think a lot of people are kind to bald women, I have noticed cars stop and wave me over the road when I want to cross, for example

I haven't had more attention totally bald than bald under a turban/ baseball cap

More attention, and being seen as attention seeking was one worry I had yesterday, but it was just the same attention, really - some kindness, mostly no visible response.

Luckily no silly school girls, lets hope that holds for today

I personally don't think I'd have the confidence. If I saw a bald woman I won't lie, I would notice as it's unusual, but I certainly wouldn't view it negatively.

Plingston · 03/03/2023 09:23

I'm in the same boat as you at the moment and I regularly go bald. I've worn my wig once but it is quite itchy. I wear hats outdoors because it's cold. I sometimes wear head coverings but they end up annoying me as well. The ones that I have to tie always end up feeling like the tie is digging in. My nurses also recommended me a look good, feel better workshop but I have no interest in wearing makeup right now. It just feels uncomfortable and I only care about comfort. Weirdly, I haven't fully lost my eyebrows or eyelashes and I only have one chemo session left so I'm not sure I will. I also have a small cyst on the front of my head which looks like a unicorn horn trying to poke through!

I've never had any negative comments about my baldness, but I have had some people stare or point me out to whoever they are with. I stare right back at them until they look away. And as far being bald being 'attention seeking', what a load of shit! This is my natural state at the moment. And wearing a headcovering when indoors is just as much of a giveaway that you have cancer. I don't enjoy the pitying looks and find them quite irritating. I'm young to have cancer so I get shocked looks and double takes. I've mostly had to learn not to look at other people too much because I can't get annoyed by their reactions if I don't see them. You do whatever you feel comfortable with. I don't even register my baldness on a day to day basis - I obviously can't see my head and I sometimes forget how I look to everyone else when I'm out and about.

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 03/03/2023 09:23

DD shaved her head and looked amazing! Just go for it. I had an 'unusual look' for a while and I found it a lot easier in London than in my local village, but then it got easier. I think people are more comfortable to wear what they want, have tattoos/piercings on show, not hide away if they look a bit different. So everyone gets used to seeing 'different' faces and bodies. My advice though would be to put some nice makeup on and ditch the turban. No-one wears turbans, unless they're Sulaiman the Magnificent. Get a nice fedora as a statement or for when it's chilly. I have two in different colours and they make me feel amazing.

Booblessbeauty · 03/03/2023 14:53

More bald walking - its great! I am getting used to it now, no negative response from anyone, not even the bunches of school girls I have passed
