to walk around bald?

Booblessbeauty · 02/03/2023 08:22

Is this socially acceptable for a woman?

I prefer when I am exercising to have my head bald, so for parkrun, etc I am already doing it

How about going to the shops, or getting on a bus, or going into a cafe with friends?

Is it OK to walk around totally bald do you think?

How would you view it? Would you do it?

I wish you a full recovery, OP

Be bald and be comfy!

and don’t pay any attention to the school kids! (I would challenge them personally but maybe that’s for next week 😜)

I always tell this story to my patients that face losing their hair through chemo. It’s a bit long so, apologies I’ll try and shorten it as much as possible.

I was was with my (then 18yr old) son in our local town. One of my patients (no hair from chemo) stopped me and we chatted for 5 minutes. As we walked off, my son said “who was that mum?”. I said well the fact she didn’t have a hair on her head might have given it away that she is a patient of mine. And he said “well I didn’t notice that, did I!”.
So I always try to reassure people that no-one actually really notices if they don’t know you!
I always encourage people to try own it and not let it own them. Easier said than done I appreciate. But you sound like you have managed to do just that! So well done!

yes, I have challenged them once - I went over and told them I was on chemo, and told them about the effects - one girl did apologise, so I felt it was worth it.

I don't mind stopping and talking, and I feel it is for the benefit of others in the same situation, and the girls themselves, but it depends really how close they are, how many they are, how quickly they are moving, etc.

It is the girls, largely. I don't know why

My Mum lost her hair with chemo. She went out occasionally without her trusty hat but people did stare and some teen girls were silly and rude.
If you feel able to handle the additional looking then go for it and I hope you are well again soon..

lovemelongtime · 02/03/2023 09:46

Perhaps we should invest in some full on Groucho Marx false moustaches,c that would really make them stare 🫣

Mariposista · 02/03/2023 09:53

You’re very brave OP. For everything. I hope your treatment goes well. All the best.

I do. It's my standard look; for no other reason than I like the look and feel.

I've never given much thought to whether it's socially acceptable. To be honest, I've no fucks to give. It's my hair. Or not, in this case 🙂

Vegrocks · 02/03/2023 10:35

You need a merino wool hat op

Keep head warm in this bitter weather and won’t irritate

dramakween · 02/03/2023 10:39

Just realised that all yellow face emojis are bald 😆 they are all cheering you on @Booblessbeauty !

weebarra · 02/03/2023 10:45

I've been where you are. I tended not to but that was my own choice (plus Scotland in winter!). I remember wearing a bandana thing and one of DS1s pals asking if I was a pirate. He was in p2 at the time, so of course I said yes!
Enjoy the biscuits!

Booblessbeauty · 02/03/2023 18:03

well, I did my longer trip out, all bald! No silly girls, no looks or comments at all. All good! I feel much more confident about it now, it will be my new default until the bone pain in my skull stops, and I can put a hat on again, but maybe even then I might not!

OP posts:
romdowa · 02/03/2023 18:06

All I'd think would be good for her. I'd be happy for you that you felt confident enough to go out bald. I know a lot of women who've went through cancer treatment and they've hated their wigs and how itchy they were but never felt brave enough to go without.

IncompleteSenten · 02/03/2023 18:06

I do. I've got alopecia and my hair looks worse when it's got a few inches than it does shaved down to the wood. It annoys me now when it grows so I take the clippers to it.

I don't care how other people feel about it. It's my head not theirs.

I do have a wig but it's a sweaty itchy fucker so I don't bother with it.

Mermaidparades · 02/03/2023 18:10

You’re amazing, you know that right? And I hope your bone pain eases very soon, that sounds horrendous

Jux · 02/03/2023 18:12

Well done you!

Booblessbeauty · 02/03/2023 18:18

thank you for all your support

Op you are the kind of woman that I look up to. Well done and wishing you a speedy recovery and a fabulous life xx

HelpIcantfindaname · 02/03/2023 18:24

When I lost my hair, due to chemo, last November, I had lots of different scarves & hats to wear. I soon realised my head got far too hot in them, unless it was absolutely freezing outside. I was self conscious at first, but then adopted a couldn't care less attitude. Generally I forget my hair, or lack of it now. Actually, I'm on a chemo break & it's starting to grow & is fuzzy, it looked better bald.
But yeah, go for it. Try not to worry about what people think. Most probably aren't gona take that much notice.

catfunk · 02/03/2023 18:30

Go for it op, I wouldn't bat an eyelid.
Nope you're well again soon x
