Most of the people who seem to want to claim that teachers are saying they have it the worst are, interestingly, also claiming that they have it worse.

Crikeyalmighty · 02/03/2023 01:14

Teaching is underpaid and undervalued (I'm not a teacher) and those on here belittling it are part of the problem- and it's why good people are avoiding it as a career too-

PressureLikeADripDripDrip · 02/03/2023 01:30

My god the very THOUGHT of my private messages being published shudder especially during that particular period of my life.

what on earth was Hancock THINKING, giving these messages to her?? It is toe-curling.

theansweris42 · 02/03/2023 01:50

I work in HR 😎
For the NHS.
We did full time all through, on site, supporting colleagues, managing staff testing and keeping track of when clinical staff off with covid might be coming back and supporting those who were more poorly.
Not the point of the thread but people in HR aren't necessarily desk bound clueless office jockeys .

I don't think Hancock ever actually thinks, does he?

Stressedafff · 02/03/2023 02:07

How people like MH get so much power is scary. He’s as thick as pig shit.

The government failed young people, not teachers. What teachers did for the children during lockdown was astonishing, making sure the most vulnerable still had access to education and support from home. That itself should be valued above anything. I hope they get their pay rise, their funding etc. they deserve it, and so do the children in schools x

Murdoch1949 · 02/03/2023 02:59

Hancock is a twat. Always has been, always will be. Why the hell that Gina woman is with him god only knows. Glad his messages got leaked by the equally vile Oakeshott.

Can't believe 19% of votes say YABU, that's how these tossers keep getting in!

YANBU.

The tories all think every worker is lazy, yet they're the ones filmed sleeping or absent without leave!

Agreed.

If success really was a result of hard work and determination you wouldn't know any of these grifters names.

mellongoose · 02/03/2023 04:13

Most people appreciate that teachers do a great job.

The NEU during covid behaved really poorly and absolutely did not put children first (which I'm sure their members do).

For that reason YABU.

MisschiefMaker · 01/03/2023 21:26

Unfortunately the unions didn't exactly cover themselves in glory during the pandemic. They've damaged the reputation of the teaching profession in many peoples eyes.

I disagree with this.

During the pandemic I felt the unions were saying x,y and z. It all made sense to me what I heard them say, what I then read about what they were saying and what was reported here by teachers.

But the media and government would say "the unions are saying a,b and c" which didn't align with my understanding of what they were saying at all.

I felt the whole thing was used by government as a political scoring card to use against Labour.

Strawberrysosweet · 02/03/2023 04:39

Much as I have no particular liking for Hancock, I don’t actually disagree with the content of the above texts.

He has criticised the teaching unions, not teachers.

I do have pretty serious concerns about the motives and about the ideology of the NEU in particular. I don’t appreciate them blocking sanctions and discipline in schools, I’m not convinced at all the strikes are in the best interest of the members and more generally, I don’t think any teaching union has been hugely effective at actually bringing about changes that will help their members at ground level, if you like.

Teachers are like any profession, with some who are amazing, some who are awful and most falling somewhere between those two extremes. Most teachers as individuals are very nice.

I think most teachers join a Union for self protection: they believe that if they are accused of something or if there is a dispute at work that the union can help. I do think from reading a lot of these threads over the last few weeks that many teachers believe the unions will act as vicious guard dogs on their behalf should a headteacher or SLT target them and to be honest they don’t, in my experience anyway. That’s why heads get away with a lot, if they have a mind to. Most teachers aren’t concerned with political campaigns so much as personal protection.

Lucylock · 02/03/2023 04:50

Hopefully this will put a stop to MHs self promoting campaign to become a celebrity. All that crap on IACGMOU about wanting to be 'forgiven for falling in love' and his fake grin was turning my stomach. He's a dim, one dimensional little sleaze ball who needs to piss off.

midsomermurderess · 02/03/2023 04:57

This is the calibre of Conservative politician we have. They pretty much despise us, hold us in contempt, think we are lazy, shiftless tossers. Not just the Britannia Unchained loons, almost all of them.

SweetSakura · 02/03/2023 05:19

Overthebow · 01/03/2023 21:42

Yes.

Agreed. They didn't want to teach in school but.also resisted remote learning. It wasn't a great moment for the teaching profession and I think the unions played it really badly mn

rwalker · 02/03/2023 05:38

But unions can be arses I’m in one of the biggest ones
we've just been through strikes
they’ve whipped people up in to a frenzy asking for impractical pay deals that would never happen
and working practices that the company could realistically never be able to implement even if they wanted to

MarshaBradyo · 02/03/2023 06:02

i agree with pp on how these badly recreated messages are leaked, by whom and why so accessible and lacking security.

But on content I’m not surprised some agree re unions. Most don’t belong to them and only think about them when they disrupt or make life more difficult for them or their dc.

One thing I remember re unions is close the schools campaign when damage was already high.

I’d separate teaching unions from what people think of teachers however as it’s not always the same.

floradora · 02/03/2023 06:04

Whilst 5% sounds "OK", look at it over time (and no, the graph is not upside down). This is from the Institute for Fiscal studies

Can’t see Gina sticking around when all of this blows over... That’s his new celebrity “career” out the window!

Yep. The government failed to invest in air filters for all schools (while parliament does!), failed to invest in catch up education and were more interested in headlines than public health.

I want to know why didn’t Chris Whitty speak up and why our covid inquiry is taking so long!

Unions are made up of teachers. They’re run by teachers. A simple google would tell you that.

Unions asked for safe working environments- and the government wouldn’t provide it. All the government had to do was invest in classroom filters and follow the science on airborne transmission…. And teachers would have been happy.

Union membership jumped during covid because teachers wanted support as the government were not doing their job.

The public may see unions as separate because they’ve been spun that position. Why do you think unions are invited to pay talks if they don’t speak for most teachers?

saleorbouy · 02/03/2023 06:19

There were alot of professions that were expected and had to keep working otherwise day to day life would have collapsed. She hospitals and support services remained open, shops and the the supply chains etc.
I understand teacher concerns but the unions didn't do you profession any favours when many were stepping up to the plate and still had to balance life around homeschooling kids.

Teachers were teaching. My kids were at school during the first lockdown

Cornettoninja · 02/03/2023 06:22

MH and his mates (ex-mates) are a bunch of bellends.

the inferiority complexes shown by people when faced with managing issues from a group of people who have actual skills and roles of importance in society is gobsmacking. Gotta stamp them down so no one notices you’re inconsequential in the grand scheme of things.

MP’s have lost sight of their roles as servants of the people. They all think they’re masters 🙄

Well done for stating the obvious.

What people think of unions isn’t always the same as how they feel about their dc’s teacher.

Whether you like it or not the public has an opinion of unions that is not always favourable.

GrammarTeacher · 02/03/2023 06:24

Do people not realise that we WERE teaching through lockdown. We weren't doing nothing. And teachers DID die. And despite being exposed weren't given earlier access to vaccine. Whereas even non-front liners in health (my sister was working from home for NHS and qualified) got the vaccine.
