Much as I have no particular liking for Hancock, I don’t actually disagree with the content of the above texts.
He has criticised the teaching unions, not teachers.
I do have pretty serious concerns about the motives and about the ideology of the NEU in particular. I don’t appreciate them blocking sanctions and discipline in schools, I’m not convinced at all the strikes are in the best interest of the members and more generally, I don’t think any teaching union has been hugely effective at actually bringing about changes that will help their members at ground level, if you like.
Teachers are like any profession, with some who are amazing, some who are awful and most falling somewhere between those two extremes. Most teachers as individuals are very nice.
I think most teachers join a Union for self protection: they believe that if they are accused of something or if there is a dispute at work that the union can help. I do think from reading a lot of these threads over the last few weeks that many teachers believe the unions will act as vicious guard dogs on their behalf should a headteacher or SLT target them and to be honest they don’t, in my experience anyway. That’s why heads get away with a lot, if they have a mind to. Most teachers aren’t concerned with political campaigns so much as personal protection.
