If you had to undress in front of someone in an emergency would you be ready?

Another one inspired by the emergency thread as this still mortifies me nowGrin last year I was taken to hospital unexpectedly after a car crash. I had to be topless for the ecg, and then someone helped me into a gown after. When I fake tan I usually only do my arms, legs up to the bottom of my bum cheeks, chest to nipple line and neck as that's the only bits that ever show so why would I waste time faffing doing the rest. Her face when she saw my weird tan lines was a real treat. I hadn't shaved my armpits or legs for about 4 weeks (it was winter alright) and I was also wearing the biggest, most unflattering pants you've ever seen as I'd been at the gym

Now I wonder if I should be more prepared for if something like that were to ever happen again. Although I'm sure they've seen it all and much worse before anywayGrin so if something similar happened to you would you be embarrassed or are you always perfectly presented?

When I was having my emergency c section the nurse was acting like she was shearing a sheep while I was being prepped for surgery. If I hadn't have been having a mental breakdown I would have been pissing myself laughing. My legs also hadn't been shaved for a good few months 😂

ToddlerTerror · 01/03/2023 11:34

I event horses which is classed as a dangerous sport. In my group of eventing friends, we always joke about being hospital ready e.g pants with no holes in, a non-stained bra and everything shaved etc.

I also remember when I was pregnant having to go in for reduced movements. I had a male doctor who wanted to give me a quick examination down below and due to my big tummy, I hadn't been able to shave down there in a while. I was mortified but he couldn't have cared any less.

Workingwithchildcare · 01/03/2023 11:37

I had to have an emergency drainage done on Sunday. I was in agony but I absolutely did put on decent knickers. And I’m glad as I had four different Drs take a look before I had the procedure (cyst was huge!). Didn’t make a difference to them I’m sure but I felt better about the whole thing 😆

Years ago a friend was knocked off her bike and had some concussion. She insisted that she had to go home to shave her legs first before being taken to A & E.

Me too. No one told me they’d shave my pubes. She walked off afterwards with pubes flying everywhere off this tiny bowl she thought was an appropriate size…..
Friends told me at the time , after actually, that they had pedicures and waxed legs etc before giving birth.
No one tells you this at NCT and anti natal classes 😳😳🤣

Ozcando · 01/03/2023 11:39

Even if for some reason people are a bit smelly ie I walked the dog knowing I would need to change ST soon but decided to wait until after walk because I had my wellies on ,fell over and broke my arm and hip ! Yes I was not the freshest when eventually got to AE in ambulance but I actually didn’t care . As an HCP we are good at mouth breathing…do it all day in my job !

I can't believe this is serious.

😂😂😂

Jeeeez it took no time at all for the fun sponges to ruin this one did it. WHO HURT YOU????!

DahliaMacNamara · 01/03/2023 11:42

I opened the thread thinking 'Yes, of course', imagining something much worse than old baggy knickers or even old baggy bums.
My aesthetic values are frighteningly low by modern standards. I think 'clean and not likely to induce vomiting' would be just fine for emergency purposes.

Bamboux · 01/03/2023 11:43

Gosh, I can't imagine why some women might not like being told that we can never, ever have a moment's break from worrying about our appearance and how well we've stuck to the rules of womanning correctly, not even when we're literally at risk of death.

What a mystery that it might not go down a storm to tell women that even when we're having emergency medical care, we should be busy hating ourselves and feeling humiliated by our bodies.

And no, when I was rushed into hospital almost dead of anaemia to have 4 blood transfusions, I did not give a single fuck about the state of my legs or armpits.

Nor did I get a pedicure to give birth (what the fuck).

Bikini wax to meet your child's teacher is just fucking weird.

These things are off the scale.

That if you need a section you may need to be partially shaved? They did at mine

ttcat37 · 01/03/2023 11:43

I had a car crash, knocked unconscious and came to on the guy who I’d crashed into’s sofa. He was a local young rugby player, apparently the crash was right outside his house. He had pulled me out the car and carried me into his house. And I’d pissed myself. All a bit embarrassing.

lunar1 · 01/03/2023 11:43

I know this is lighthearted, but I think it's really important that everyone knows, healthcare professionals don't care about underwear, personal grooming, or anything else a person might be embarrassed about. We've seen it all, we don't pay pay attention to anything other than the medically necessary information and the chances are we will be with dozens of mostly naked people on a shift, so we really won't remember if we bump into you on the street.

People can hide some really important symptoms out of embarrassment, it's dangerous.

I don't think that being lectured about how I should feel shame and embarrassment about my body if I haven't had a full beauty treatment before a medical emergency is much fun.

Clearly we have different ideas of what counts as enjoyment.

AIBUNoNo · 01/03/2023 11:45

well, if it's light hearted, I was brought up to be always ready for being knocked down by a bus. Which meant decent knickers at least.

I think it's stuck because if I am going out and travelling, I do tend to do a quick once-over of the hairy shins and armpits.

Lordofthebutterfloofs · 01/03/2023 11:46

ALL of my pants have holes in OP. DH recons I'm trying to turn them into lace knickers. So no, I would not be presentable in an emergency 😂

Some folk on here need to lighten up a bit.

ancientgran · 01/03/2023 11:46

My issue when I was taken to hospital by ambulance after a traffic accident was my handbag. On being admitted the nurse had to list my person items, my handbag had about 2000 "essential" items and she groaned. Fortunately two police officers had arrived and they were based at the station where I did an admin job so I just handed my bag to them. The nurse was relieved. I now have a very small handbag which normally has purse, car keys and a folded up carrier bag and nothing else.

Namechanger355 · 01/03/2023 11:47

Have you given birth op? No dignity with that

either it’s an emergency in which case the hcp has more important things to do than look at your tan lines and you won’t be in a position to care about how you look

or it’s not an emergency and a routine apppintment in which case if you think you will need to show your body and you care about how you look - sort yourself out before the appointment

Anniecott · 01/03/2023 11:49

I have a friend who HAS to wear matching underwear sets, in case she's in a horrendous accident and her body gets torn apart and they need to know which parts are hers and the only way they can do this is to match her underwear wear together, I think this takes being prepared to a whole different level 😂

drspouse · 01/03/2023 11:52

I am a grownup and can undo all my own clothing with the possible exception of my bra if I broke my arm/shoulder (this did happen to me, so the nurse did it for me).
I also can't believe this is serious. I assume these are also people who wax their legs/bikini area before going to the doctor's. Who has time for that?

xogossipgirlxo · 01/03/2023 11:54

Jodielou5972 · 01/03/2023 11:18

I was rushed to hospital a few years ago and they had to cut all my clothes off me to get me ready for ICU/surgery/wires etc. All I remember when I woke up was how devastated I was that they had cut my favourite p-jays 😂 still not over it being honest!
But I didn't think about the state of my body or hairs etc. I ended up in a coma for a while and I did find it quite embarrassing meeting the nurse who my mam said was just incredible taking care of me, and while I was meeting her for the first time (on my part, I was unconscious), my mam said "she used to bath and change you every day and she was always so gentle and made sure you were clean". Errrr thanks for the sponge bath 😳😂

My friend had motorcycle accident (he was conscious) and when paramedics arrived, he was begging them not to cut his expensive motorcycle clothes 😂

bringbacksideburns · 01/03/2023 11:54

I was run over two weeks ago and smashed my chin up. Trust me I didn’t give a shit! Tbh I was in so much pain before the X Ray my dh had to come in and help me get undressed.

Not being a ‘fun sponge’ - just that in an emergency you really don’t even think about it, do you?

Roggers · 01/03/2023 11:54

This thread wasn't meant to insult, offend or lecture anybody. I know they didn't care what I looked like and have seen it all before. I also didn't really care, as in I didn't think no way are they taking me to hospital in case anybody sees me. The nurse moved my boob, I caught sight of my tan line and commented on it to try and give myself something to laugh about whilst I was in hospital on my own at night after nearly being killed. She laughed with me. I know she didn't actually care about it. Maybe that makes me an awful person for even noticing it at the time, but if it does so be it, I can't change that now

And at no point have I said anybody has to wear fake tan, shave or do anything else if they don't want to. I do it because I want to

I once had a road accident that meant my jeans had to be cut off me. I lay in the middle of the road loudly screeching ‘but I’m not wearing any knickers!’. Several police officers and the paramedics formed a bubble of onlookers around me, and got an eye full 😳 If you’re going to ride a motorbike - or actually, leave the house at all - for the love of God, put some underwear on … 🤦‍♀️
