if thw police or ambulance knocked the door right now would your house be OK to let them in?

if there was a fire (not blocking exits) or a family emergency/ trip to a and e needed right now could you get out of the house or everyone dressed and out relatively easily and quickly?

I don’t think it’s typical to have a hospital bag always ready though is it? Except if you’re about to give birth or otherwise expecting admission?

I do.

it's much easier & makes the hospital stay slightly more bare able.

two urgent hospital admissions in 4 years, both week long stays. Second loads easier as I just had to get someone to get the bag for me, not direct them to my knicker drawer & sanitary supply!

Had a situation this weekend, at around midnight, where our neighbour was being physically assaulted and came to our home to wait for the police, as the offender was in their home - after the police & paramedics, our neighbour and the family member they called for support had left and we were getting over the shock of it all I said to my husband “well at least the house was tidy” - I wasn’t really bothered think it just came out after the total unexpected situation occurred.

this is absolutely what I'm talking about.
WhT a lively neighbour you Re letting them in

Some days I'd be ready.
I've probably watche'd too much 24 hours in a and e.
I suppose this thread is about the house equivalent of making sure you wear clean pants incase of an emergency (anyone else's parents tell them this?)

Yes and yes but my house is a tip so I'd die a bit inside if paramedics needed access.

4 kids, I'm always Ready ( enough). Plus I always have a emergency bag half packed for things like A&E. I always have a battery pack and leads on me too. I used used them too. It makes me feel better knowing where everything I would need for say a hospital dash with a child is.

Mañanarama · 28/02/2023 23:18

Police coming in - no problem, they’ll have seen far worse in an emergency situation.

Fire - we have discussed this. Smash bathroom window with plant pot
and jump down onto flat roof.

Leaving the house - if I can pick up my handbag I’m pretty much ready for anything!

Deanandthellhounds · 28/02/2023 23:09

@Mammyloveswine are you my long lost sister? I always, always have something disgusting going on when the inlaws pop round. I had similar in the bath after ds1 (mixed with poopy baby clothes of course) , I shut the shower curtain and it was open when they left. The shame!

It's nice to not be alone Grin.

Also...i might pack an "emergency bag" with brand new knickers, socks, leggings, T-shirts, pjs, slippers, toothbrush and hairbrush and deodorant so I would never need anyone hunting round my shit tip of a bedroom!

Mind must admit if ever I've visited anyone who's having an unexpected hospital stay i usually pop to primark and buy them some essentials as it is nice to have new pjs/pants/ socks etc when staying somewhere new even if it is a hospital!

Deanandthellhounds · 28/02/2023 23:19

I wanna be like you name changer.
apart from the messy house lol
i have a friend who's always got everything you ever need in her bag, charger ,hair brush, plasters, tights! incase someone has a ladder! socks as well incase someone tells her to take her shoes off and she's wearing no socks, sewing kit.
she is everyone's go to in an emergency. Very together ❤

I'd have no bother letting the police or paramedics into my house ATM.

Unfortunately I'm pretty sure I'd burn as I'd need to herd the cats into carriers in the case of a fire so I only hope that never happens.

StarDolphins · 28/02/2023 23:07

I wouldn’t care about my house being tidy but I’d be ones of those difficult people that won’t go until I’ve sorted my pets!

I do not mind this. In fact, I think even more of you for being a pet person. I also want to play with your pets (as long as your life isn't in danger of course!)

WinterMusings · 28/02/2023 23:21

@Deanandthellhounds

Yes, it's perfectly acceptable for in an emergency & also fine for friends/neighbours. Currently wouldn't pass any white glove inspections, the windows alone would have them crying. I have a list....

Actually when I did have an accident and ended up in hospital, the worst bit was being taken home by hospital transport & the rehabilitation/nurse/community visits in the days after.

I couldn't move & there were just things I wanted to do, (dishes, tidy away a few projects I'd been working on, fold up some washing) but I couldn't even sit up by myself, or hold a drink or anything, so after apologising a million times, I just had to let it go. 🤷🏻‍♀️

so as well as always having a hospital bag ready, I try to always be rehabilitation carer ready!

Spectre8 · 28/02/2023 23:22

Now I think about it, I once slipped on my bathroom tiles and landed on my arm badly. Whilst I was okay it made me think since I live alone to always bring a phone into the bathroom cos what if I needed to call for an ambulance. Then I thought well if that was the case i might be butt naked but at least I had just cleaned my house 🤣

Deanandthellhounds · 28/02/2023 23:24

So many pets! I don't have any but I do have a toddler which is the equivalent of 10 unruly cats. it's a nightmare getting out on a good day, never mind an emergency.

@Mammyloveswine I always get new pj's when I have a new baby and now I've got too many but each pair remind me of having my babies so I have to keep them all! socks too, I have 3 pairs of holey socks in my draws, one from each pack when I had my kids. can't let them go. no wonder my house is a tip. sentimental fool I am

My dh had a potentially fatal accident at work. We never lock our door and his Co worker came into my bedroom to wake me up once. They was debating air lifting him to London. I had absolutely no one to watch my kids. Always thought that was really sad. Luckily my sister dashed back from work by train then car. But I couldn't think of anyone who take time off work for me to go the resus with him. It's amazing how you just cope with no choice. I was still mortified my house was messy

PaperwhiteTheGhost · 28/02/2023 23:28

Listen up all of you, I promise you that your idea of "a tip' is not. I mean it REALLY is not. Mess, clutter, dust. All normal. All signs of humans living in a home.

I have been in some absolute abominations of homes. I've seen the most epic dirt. I've seen THE most revolting kitchens. Bathrooms. Even bedrooms. I promise you, 99% of you are fine. We're (paramedics) all normal people with family's and lived in homes too. No one cares about a bit of dust and a pile of toys or washing.

And we don't judge the actual grim houses either. There's usually a reason behind it.

We're nice. Honest!

Forgooodnesssakenow · 28/02/2023 23:30

My house is a coup but my eldest has had around 10/12 febrile seizures, always long and complex, several life threatening, around 6/7 requiring an ambulance, it's always after a few days of illness so the place is at its worst. But I'm always so grateful to see the paramedics.

For the longest time it was so frequent we'd pre packed hospital bags in the hall cupboard.

It's only mess, I work 4 days a week, I have 2 children under school age who've been sick bloody constantly all winter and 1 has a serious condition.

Daffodilsandtuplips · 28/02/2023 23:33

I think you should ask your local fire station if they’ll come out and do a fire safety check. We had one in August 2021. They’ll tell you to keep stairs and door clear of obstacles, make sure smoke alarms are working, close all doors at night.
I have a big house and they were concerned at the proximity of the smoke alarm at the top of the stairs, they were concerned it was too far away from the room the grandkids sleep in, so they fitted one in that bedroom free of charge. It has a light that comes on if ever the alarm is triggered, it’s angled at the door so the kids could see an exit.
The police, fire service and ambulance personnel will have seen a lot worse than a bit of Lego on the floor or washing piled up, they won’t judge unless there’s signs of serious neglect where children or elderly people are present.

If my husband has to pack for an unexoectantbhospital admission I get a back of clothes I swear he's never seen me wear, a pair of jeans that don't fit, a pair of pyjama bottoms, wool jumpers in summer, maxi dresses in winter. It's ridiculous, hes an adult man who does more than half the laundry but ask him to pack a spare bra some pants and 2 outfits and he's like a drunk stranger rummaging.

Bad enough being in hospital, advocating with consultants without looking like a homeless bag of laundry

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 28/02/2023 23:36

House is fine although a lot of washing is drying in the kitchen. DP is away for work, so it’s just me and the cat. If I had to get her out in a carrier it would be a struggle, usually DP does it and she screams blue murder.

I am definitely not dressed for company though in fleecy leopard print pjs and a big jumper!

My dog would be no issue in an emergency. She is pretty much glued to me or my partner 24/7. She’d bolt out as soon as the door opened.

Your good planning paid off for sure 😊 None of us have ever had emergency hospital care (we are sort of lucky - DH died v young so not really) so this wasn’t on my radar, but considering it now

WormEater · 28/02/2023 23:46

I used to always know where everything was for an emergency hospital trip - bag, coins, snacks, toiletries, chargers, pjs etc and could have been out of the house in 3 minutes.
Nowadays I might take me 5 minutes, so yes, I guess I am prepared.
House is a bit of a mess though.

RandomNameUser54321 · 28/02/2023 23:48

House is certainly always tidy enough for the police?! But I wouldn’t let them in because why would I?

We recently had to take DC to urgent care around 9pm in a rush (breathing distress), she’d been asleep and we were in sweats etc. DH held her while I grabbed coats, pram, purse and were out of the house in less than 5. I don’t think we bothered with anything else? But we also live in a place where we would not be waiting 12 hours in a&e (in and out in 2 hours including chest X-ray, seeing pediatrician and getting prescription filled) and have at least 10 people we could’ve called who would’ve brought anything we needed. Lucky to have a lot of family and friends within 20 mins.
