if thw police or ambulance knocked the door right now would your house be OK to let them in?

if there was a fire (not blocking exits) or a family emergency/ trip to a and e needed right now could you get out of the house or everyone dressed and out relatively easily and quickly?

If the police or ambulance people needed to come into my house they could come in whatever it looked like. If we needed to get out the house quickly we would get out in whatever we were wearing at the time. I was once evacuated from a terrace house as next door was on fire. The guy who lived in that house climbed out his bedroom window naked. I guess if there is a fire your modesty is the least of your worries.

saltinesandcoffeecups · 28/02/2023 22:42

Posted too soon… if someone knocked on the door I wouldn’t have to hide bodies or anything but would have to kick cat tubes/toys/beds out of the way.

‘’Depending on the situation I could get to the hospital… I mean no if I were unconscious or lost a leg in a washing machine mishap but yes if I were having an allergic reaction or need a small amount of stitches.

maybe this would help… in a weird freakish turn of events I managed to sort out 3 cats to the emergency vet and a trip to the hospital in under 15 minutes with the help of my husband (who was called at work) and my neighbors.

Does that count?

In the middle of an emergency that required police or paramedics you would be embarrassed about the tidiness of upstairs? Really?

I think in the moment you wouldn't give a fuck

User473831 · 28/02/2023 22:41

Is this like the riddle with the farmer and the boat who needs to carry corn, chickens and the dog but can only take two at a time?

Because whilst the dogs can go on the boat with the chickens, I’m not sure the cat would share with anyone and I don’t have corn, only layers pellets at the moments and the dogs are just as likely to eat them.

🤣🤣🤣

sweeneytoddsrazor · 28/02/2023 22:45

You went to the shop on your way to a &e?

KievsOutTheOven · 28/02/2023 22:45

Deanandthellhounds · 28/02/2023 22:39

I'll go first,
my downstairs isclean but upstairs a mess so if there was a fire right now there might be tripping over toys, standing on lego trying to get out. kids are in pj's but I'm in vest and knickers (anyone remember pe in nursery?) so I'd have to get dressing gown on.

if police or ambulance had to come in, I'd be fine of they dated downstairs bit I would be embarrassed if they went upstairs (to the loo or something)

I don't have a hospital bag ready if we ever needed to go quickly. when my son fell off his bike and suspected he broke his arm I went to a and e right away but had to run home to grab a bag first, no change in the house for vending machines or quick snacks or drinks to take so we went to the shop first (approx 12 hour wait, we were there for longer)

Another time the ambulance people came in and I had my Dirty washing next to the washing machine and a big pile of washing to fold on the sofa. I don't even know why I was embarrassed but I was.

This whole thing is ridiculous.

How messy exactly is your upstairs? There should always be a clear route to exits even if the rest of the place is a riot.

If your house is legit on fire you don’t grab a robe, you go outside and batter a neighbours door and put kids in there, and borrow a robe.

They aren’t going to go to your loo (probably) - I’d imagine particularly so if your house is as gross as you are making out 😂 - and they aren’t going to care about some clutter.

In the event of an emergency we have Apple Pay on our phones and almost all vending machines accept this now, or one of us would nip to the hospital shop. But again, if my kid needed hospital (I’ve only been at a&e once in 7 years of being a parent, and it wasn’t a scary emergency, we were sent by 111) I wouldn’t be worrying about that shit.

ToLongToCharge · 28/02/2023 22:45

We have a fire extinguisher and there are hospital bags packed in the house ‘ready’ with things including cheap spare phones and chargers, list of medications and everything needed for about 3 nights atleast but thats cause we are often in hospital for overnight stays….

With regards to leaving the house in Emergency, a REAL Emergency…
Surely you would just grab a dressing gown / Coat and get out the house?

FlamingoSocks · 28/02/2023 22:45

Of course not. I’m in bed after a 12 hour shift under a new goose feather duvet.

FlamingoSocks · 28/02/2023 22:46

The shift wasn’t under the duvet, to clarify. I am now under the duvet, having worked the shift.

Spectre8 · 28/02/2023 22:48

My neighbour obviously isn't prepared. When a fire started up in his garden he wouldn't let the fire brigade through his house to access the garden and it wasn't safe for them to jump over the fence cos its a jungle and to guarantee on what they would land on. They ended up taking over from me and my garden hose.

Mammyloveswine · 28/02/2023 22:50

OP my upstairs is a tip too so I'd also be mortified if I had to let anyone there! I say upstairs is a tip... my bedroom is a tip as wardrobe collapsed and in desperate need of a new chest of drawers so currently have clothing mountain!

Also have a load of shit from the loft as that being insulated so my room is a dumping ground.

Kids room is relatively tidy but they got so much for Christmas and for their birthdays there is a pile of stuff still with no home so will spend a few days in the Easter hols having s big de-clutter!

I'm pleased I have a downstairs' toilet for visitors!

In a real emergency though op I wouldn't give a shit!

I am paranoid though that I die in a car crash and my dad comes round to sort through the house and it's a tip so have a pact with my close friends that should this arise they will make sure my house is clean and tidy Grin. My dad is very extreme though...he inspects my wheelie bins to comment on if I've squashed my cardboard small enough Blush.

Spongeboob · 28/02/2023 22:51

Clean and tidy, yep. Criminal? No worries here. Wouldn’t want to leave the house though as I don’t have my eyebrows on Grin

StJulian2023 · 28/02/2023 22:51

I don’t think it’s typical to have a hospital bag always ready though is it? Except if you’re about to give birth or otherwise expecting admission?

Deanandthellhounds · 28/02/2023 22:52

@Spectre8 yes my neighbour did similar, ti be fair he was probably growing cannabis or something. never thought of that until the past about mess or criminal activity

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 28/02/2023 22:52

House is a bit messy but not so much that it would prevent me letting in emergency services and I could throw a bag of stuff together for a hospital trip in about 2 minutes.

I look them in the eye and say : excuse the mess it's always like this.

Anyone judging someone for the state of their house when there's an emergency is a knob.

Babdoc · 28/02/2023 22:55

Well my house has caught fire twice so far - once due to an arsonist and once a chimney fire - and I put the fires out myself both times, without needing to evacuate the kids. Which was just as well as the nearest fire brigade is ten miles away and it was snowing heavily at the time of the arson attack!
Mind you, when the fire brigade eventually arrived, they piled upstairs to check for possible smouldering floorboards in the bedroom above the fire. DD woke up to find six men in yellow outfits and boots, wielding fire axes, bursting through her door, and screamed the place down! I hadn’t had time to warn her in all the kerfuffle.

Deanandthellhounds · 28/02/2023 22:57

@Mammyloveswine ah I'm glad ots not just me. We had inlaws pop in during a big deckutter and there were piles of stuff on every surface.
The cupboards were spotless but they didn't check them did they?

Oh god you've just reminded of when I had just had DS1, he was about 3 weeks old and in laws came up. MIL and I went for a little walk and coffee...came back and DH mentioned his dad had "sorted the tap in the en-suite". The en-suite that had a bin full of my maternity pads and breast pads, bloody pj bottoms SOAKING in the sink and nursing bras drying in the shower... I just about died.

DailyMailHater · 28/02/2023 23:05

Had a situation this weekend, at around midnight, where our neighbour was being physically assaulted and came to our home to wait for the police, as the offender was in their home - after the police & paramedics, our neighbour and the family member they called for support had left and we were getting over the shock of it all I said to my husband “well at least the house was tidy” - I wasn’t really bothered think it just came out after the total unexpected situation occurred.

PaperwhiteTheGhost · 28/02/2023 23:05

Deanandthellhounds · 28/02/2023 22:40

I meant clean and tidy but now I mean criminal. Confess!

Ha, nothing to confess, I'm a paramedic so wondered how bad it was.

I 100% promise you, we are not looking at or judging normal family lived-in homes. We go into some absolutely repugnant houses. No one is gonna notice your dirty washing. We all have families too.

If an ambulance person is popping upstairs to use your loo, it's not an emergency!

Criminal wise, my main experience is of going ti places with obvious drug use. I don't bat an eye. Can't speak for the police, but I hope if you've called them to your property, you'd be smart enough to put the bong away and spray some febreeze

StarDolphins · 28/02/2023 23:07

I wouldn’t care about my house being tidy but I’d be ones of those difficult people that won’t go until I’ve sorted my pets!

Deanandthellhounds · 28/02/2023 23:09

@Mammyloveswine are you my long lost sister? I always, always have something disgusting going on when the inlaws pop round. I had similar in the bath after ds1 (mixed with poopy baby clothes of course) , I shut the shower curtain and it was open when they left. The shame!
