How are prices STILL going up? I went in for a couple of meals and lunches for the week for just two of us and spent £50. I'll be back there before the end of the week. How on earth are people with big families, teens that eat them out of house and home etc, coping?

me and my toddler, I spend around £70-£100 a week depending on what I’ve already got. I’m vegan, he’s not - so it makes it more expensive. It also includes nappies/wipes, laundry and cleaning supplies. I meal plan, do only one shop weekly (no top up shops), and I mainly only buy sale Items yet my shop is still so expensive each week.

MorgansMullet · 27/02/2023 19:01

About £900 a month, 3 adults, 1 teen, lots of animals.

Urnotthebossofmenow · 27/02/2023 19:03

£70 a week for a family. Sainsburys

Urnotthebossofmenow · 27/02/2023 19:04

Family of 4*

OoooohMatron · 27/02/2023 19:04

£90. In Aldi today for 5 days of dinners and lunches (2 adults and 2 DC, 12 & 10. Also a bottle of wine in there. I find I spend much less since meal planning.

i did £120 today in tesco thats with zero toiletries

So did I. It was an online order and when I unpacked it onto the kitchen sides it looked like there was barely anything there. 😥

Our budget is £150 p/w….. 2 adults, 2 kids. To cover all food, a few beers, toiletries inc nappies and wipes, all pet food for several pets, all cleaning stuff. We always managed well on this and were able to include some treats etc.

now that covers what we need but no extras and much more careful planning.

im fully aware we’re lucky to have a generous budget and be able to afford what we need. But the cost is very noticeably different and it must be bloody awful for so many people.

Merlott · 27/02/2023 19:10

£168 weekly food shop 2 adults 2 under 6. Lidl! No toiletries or cleaning products. Fresh food and some tins.

Genuinely don't know how anyone can afford to shop at Tesco anymore

Rocket1982 · 27/02/2023 19:13

Budget used to be £60/week 8 years ago, was about £80/week before the pandemic and now it is £125. Same stuff. Probably less wine (about 1 bottle/month now as we had to cut back). 2 adults, 2 kids, one cat.

IAmMeThisIsI · 27/02/2023 19:18

We're poor so we have to shop as cheaply as possible and always go for the cheapest, supermarket brand, possibly unhealthy (but cheaper) products.

For two adults we spend about £50 a week. We go without food and skip loads of meals. We often have an empty kitchen by the time money comes back around.

Today we went shopping and it was horrible to see the prices and the increases. Toilet roll in Tesco's was sold out of the usual 80p one. Anyhow, it's not 80p anymore it's £1.20. Toilet roll had to be bought for £2 in the end. I use this example because it was pretty much like this across the board. Sold out of cheaper items, prices increased on cheaper items anyway and the more expensive items even more expensive.

Oysterbabe · 27/02/2023 19:18

It's definitely going up and up. Bulked my bolognaise with mushrooms and lentils today.

RosieRainbow1986 · 27/02/2023 19:21

A small fortune...only the two of us and a minimum spend of £75 per week...neither of us drink or have particularly extravagant tastes but it soon adds up. I do it online so always try and cut it down as much as possible but it's so hard.

Itawapuddytat · 27/02/2023 19:22

About 20% more than last year. For more or less the same things [actually, probably for fewer things Sad ]

PerfectYear321 · 27/02/2023 19:24

My food shop is up 33%
£120 a week now shopping in Aldi. Three adults . We do like our meat, though.

Merryoldgoat · 27/02/2023 19:25

£200 a week for family of 4 with a cat. That includes cleaning bollocks.

WellTidy · 27/02/2023 19:26

£200/week at the moment. It has really gone up loads in the last year. That is for four of us, but one has a food intake disorder and I cannot deviate from safe foods (which are expensive and as I cannot substitute in any way). Two of us eat all our meals at home, the other two eat all meals at home save for weekday lunches. I cook everything from scratch so it’s not convenience foods.

PeanutCat1 · 27/02/2023 19:26

I've spent £80 today on a weeks food shopping for two adults and a toddler, we will probably have to top up in the week for fresh bread and fruit etc. our weekly food shopping doesn't include any pet food, cleaning products or toiletries as we usually buy them all separately. We used to spend about £70 per week including nappies and formula when DS was a baby so have definitely noticed how much prices have gone up.

PerfectYear321 · 27/02/2023 19:26

Genuinely don't know how anyone can afford to shop at Tesco anymore

I genuinely didn't understand how people could afford it BEFORE inflation exploded

Merryoldgoat · 27/02/2023 19:28

I should add that both boys are autistic and therefore have fewer choices than ideal.

MorgansMullet · 27/02/2023 19:30

We still shop at Tesco, no choice really on a lot of stuff for us.

IncessantNameChanger · 27/02/2023 19:32

I have changed how I shop for our family of six. I go and do two tiny shops per week. Only getting exactly what I need. I set myself a challenge to spend under £30, meal plan and am using up everything in the freezer and cupboards. If we don't have snacks or fruit for a few days then tough. It's the only choice I have if I want to pay the mortgage and heat the house over 10 degrees. I had 4 kids based on the possibility one of us could loose a Jon, but not this sanario

MissMarplesbag · 27/02/2023 19:32

Near £100 weekly and that's with reducing meat & fish to twice a week each and veggie the rest of it. I do a stock take before each shopping day and write a shopping list from this. I also create menus from what's leftover in the cupboards. This usually stretches things out & delays the shopping trip by a day or two.

LisaD1 · 27/02/2023 19:33

Before all the price increase it was around £80 most weeks with the occasional £100 week. It’s now between £120-£140. 2 adults and one teenage daughter. That doesn’t include dog food as we buy from a pet warehouse place. That is all meals (we both wfh) and DH’s weekly bottle of wine. It does also include all toiletries, we eat lots of fruit and veg too.

DoraDunebug · 27/02/2023 19:34

£200 a week for 8 of us including the Mumsnet chicken.

BigBunkers · 27/02/2023 19:35

£50 a week for four dinners a week from hello fresh
£70-ish from Morrisons a week on other dinners, toiletries, lunches etc
£15 on fruit & veg from the market
£10-£20 at the butchers for Saturday night dinner and Sunday lunch
So shit loads basically. 2 adults and 2 kids
