‘Normal’ Bodies

Liz Jones incenses me at the best of times (mainly due to her constant lies) but her article in todays Mail on Sunday (I know, I know) really takes the cake - quite literally

it’s around the decline of the curvy model and a shift back towards the look of the 90s and 00s… I must admit I don’t pay a lot of attention to catwalk shows so hadn’t really noticed but maybe she’s right. However she actually uses the phrase ‘normal bodies (anything larger than the obligatory catwalk size 6 to 8)’. Im naturally this size - I’m just small framed and also very short so not exactly a willowy VS model - but I find it really offensive that it’s implied to be ‘abnormal’ - or am I overly sensitive?

I’m also not sure how sensible it is to have LJ write this column in the first place after her own admissions around disordered eating…especially when she refers to the Prada and Versace models as ‘in need of palliative care’ - tactful as always Liz!

No idea who this person is, but models are usually not too shy of 6 feet tall, size 6-8 is really abnormal - but someone who is short would suit that size and wouldn't be that unusual for people of a short stature

YANBU.

I hate the double standard that thinner people are fair game to be called unhealthy etc yet overweight people are body positive and you should never say anything about them because it's a normal body. Why isn't this logic applied to thinner than average people?

Stop reading Liz Jones and the Mail on Sunday - you know it only makes you angry or miserable.

I really don't think Liz Jones has fully recovered from her difficulties with food and body image. My understanding is that she has been quite seriously ill in the past.

I can't imagine taking anything Liz Jones says in a column to heart. Maybe stop reading her for a bit?

I feel like I need to clarify that I’m far from outraged and/or upset by this, just a little bit offended. I usually ‘hate read’ Liz Jones since it usually provides a lot of amusement due to her completely fabricated life…

I just find this happening more and more where ‘normal’ actually means ‘average’ - everyone has what is ‘normal’ for them which may be above, below or bang on ‘average’. I find similar comments a lot when referring to people who have had eg Botox or boob jobs - I’ve had both but that’s still my normality and I’m still real even if my breasts are not!

I used to do modelling & would say it's not a normal body type. Most people are not that tall or thin particularly "naturally" as you get older. I don't think plastic surgery is normal either but that doesn't mean if you have it it's a bad thing.
