Sick of train driver just passing me

gypsytrampandthief · 25/02/2023 23:25

Twice this week the driver "hasn't seen me" (despite today standing as close to the track as is reasonably safe and waving) Yesterday morning he didn't stop and I drove to the next station, passing the train, and got to the platform where he had pulled in for a group of teenage female students going to college. I was so furious I spoke to the ticket inspector and explained that this is the second time the driver has gone right by me. For complete transparency, the first time I was looking at my phone and late to wave, but ffs, why else would anyone be standing on an empty platform at 7.10 in the morning! Yesterday I was 100% looking up and arm out.

AIBU to think that a dumpy middle aged woman is not as "visible" as a teenage student?

Never heard of this in my life. What line or area of the country is this?

gypsytrampandthief · 26/02/2023 00:09

As I said above is it not possible to always use this station, the one with the students at it as the higher number of people will mean the driver is less likely to miss you and not stop

This is true. And it is only a couple of miles along. But a fair few students get on here and the one before means I nearly always get a seat, otherwise it's standing room watching the teenagers snore or listening to the hysterical laughter at videos on their phones for the next hour ...

Are you one of the railway children?

Obviously not, or Mr Perks would flag down the train for her and help her on!

Ah, where is the Fat Controller when you need him!!

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 26/02/2023 00:11

We have a couple of request stops near us in rural Cumbria - I'd suggest a bright umbrella or something to wave at the driver - especially on dark mornings.

watcherintherye · 26/02/2023 00:12

I can imagine you having
to try increasingly outlandish ways to make him stop for you!

How about a red flashing head torch?

Rural Cumbria has loads of these.

Rural Cumbria has loads of these.

So does the not so rural West Mids.

It's baffling that people don't know that request stops exist!

Why would people who have never experienced one know they exist? I travel by train (almost) every day and my experience is that trains have “stops” built in to their timetable so need to stop at every station.

ComeTheFckOnBridget · 26/02/2023 00:23

Yanbu. Wear a crop top next time.

ArcaneWireless · 26/02/2023 00:25

For want of stating the obvious, it isn’t wise to be flashing red lights in sight of the driver.

Bobbie used her red petticoat to stop the train because of an emergency.

This is not that.

mindutopia · 26/02/2023 00:25

People never knowing that request stops are a thing. 🙄 I live rurally but on a very fast low be into London. On the London end of my commute, there are several request stops!

OP, yes, it’s super annoying and I would complain. Doesn’t matter who you are or what you look like. Bet they’d get a hell of a walloping if a ‘businessman’ on my usual line complained about a non-stop.

RampantIvy · 26/02/2023 00:28

Why is it some MNetters can never grasp the concept that not everywhere does things the same? This entire thread will now go off on a tangent of ‘well that doesn’t happen here’.

I agree. I expect they live in urban areas and have no concept of rural living. These are probably the same posters who assume that the A roads in very rural Scotland are two lane highways, and not narrow winding roads with passing places.

ArcaneWireless · 26/02/2023 00:29

Crop top? Worth a shot for some 😆

I wouldn’t because my belly would fall out. And under/side boob is unbecoming when you have 40 year old wallopers.

I looked it up as never heard of it and none of them are showing as stations in London

Ha ha. Maybe I'll just ditch the crop top and go for the whole swinging pendulous babylons look. The train would probably stop but only because he'd have crashed whilst covering his eyes 😂😂

OldFan · 26/02/2023 00:33

I had no idea and I was brought up rurally. Most places just didn't have a station.

Maybe wear something colourful IDK. Or as PP's said red petticoat for sure. Smile

This is why actually asking MANY questions on MN is slightly pointless. This thread has just proved how many people believe some (totally normal for many of us!) things are completely beyond the comprehension of their teeny minds, let alone that they have the ability to Google to ascertain the veracity of what their responding to in advance. What we need to remember is that a vast number of Mumsnetters live in suburbia and do not have the ability to imagine anything beyond their own personal experiences!😂 Oh an by the way op - YANBU😁

Notsa · 26/02/2023 00:35

Yanbu and it's shit.

That list posted upthread is defo incomplete my two nearest stations aren't on it. I don't even live rurally, it is just a quiet line.

Chouetted · 26/02/2023 00:35

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 26/02/2023 00:12

Rural Cumbria has loads of these.

So do the non-rural bits of Cumbria (if, that is, anywhere in Cumbria outside of Carlisle can truly be described as non-rural).

I second the suggestion of something neon - or use your phone torch.

It needs to be clear and unambiguous. But drivers will occasionally forget because they're human and make stupid mistakes. Sometimes they forget to stop at the normal stops too...

That is an interesting point as I often see posts like "surely you must have an Ocado that you can get to" or similar when people aren't actually asking about how do they find their nearest supermarket, they're asking for advice on meal planning to stretch what they have because they can't get to a shop! Or "why don't you just get an Uber, surely there must be at least one taxi service that work on a Sunday... " etc!
