Treated differently because I had a helix piercing

I think this is bizarre. I had a helix piercing a year ago. My ears already have just one piercing on each lobe (as do many, many other people) but when I wear my hair back the helix piercing is noticeable (it’s only a stud).

people say oh I didn’t realise you had a piercing up there, but when I say I had it last year they seem totally surprised (I’m a middle aged woman) and quickly change the subject or say something along the lines of how unusual this is at my age.

The rest of my appearance is entirely smart, I am well dressed, hair done and minimal make up.

I feel sometimes that people find it unprofessional? I have a responsible job but feel I am being judged because of this piercing?

Anyone else experienced this?

I think it is in your head. It is barely interesting. What more do you want people to say about it?

JudgeRudy · 24/02/2023 21:18

You need to give some examples of what people have said or done for you to feel judged

Timesawastin · 24/02/2023 21:19

Well it is somewhat unusual. I'm 60 with a nose piercing and often get (non-confrontational like those you had) comments. I don't care.
Honestly I think you are reading more into it than mild surprise and interest.

chelle0 · 24/02/2023 21:19

No just you. I've got/had lots of piercings and I don't think anyone's ever batted an eyelid.

MichelleScarn · 24/02/2023 21:20

Are people really that surprised by this? Are you pointing it out and they are desperately searching for something to say in response?

Thesearmsofmine · 24/02/2023 21:21

I’d be very surprised if anyone really cared. I had that done when I was a teen about 25 years ago so it isn’t new or alternative.

Stressfordays · 24/02/2023 21:21

Yeah no one really cares in reality. People have all sorts of piercings so no one bats an eyelid. Probably just trying to make conversation.

SeaSnakes · 24/02/2023 21:22

Ok glad to hear these. I’m probably being paranoid! I don’t think it’s remotely interesting to others which is why I’m surprised when people comment. It’s like I’m not the ‘type of person’ who’d have this kind of piercing- whatever that’s supposed to mean

I can't imagine anyone would give it a second thought to be honest, after all they were popular in the 1990s (probably before but I had mine as a teen in the 90s and pretty much every woman I knew had one) so it's not exactly new or shocking. In fact a lot of middle aged people probably had one at some point

RobertaFirmino · 24/02/2023 21:24

I don't have one myself but it's a pretty bog standard piercing really. Especially now with all these 'curated ears' with a mish-mash of things in them.

MirabelMax · 24/02/2023 21:24

You're imagining it surely? Helix piercings are so mainstream and barely noticeable.

yesterdayisgone · 24/02/2023 21:25

I’ve a tiny Nose stud piercing , helix piercing and underneath my suitable clothing for a 50 year old woman I have
nipple piercings and vch piercing . I don’t think anyone really cares about an ear piercing lol

QueenAstrid · 24/02/2023 21:25

But a helix piercing is so mainstream. I’m mid 40’s with multiple cartilage ear piercings and nobody bats an eyelid. I have a professional job and nobody has ever commented on them. Are you sure you’re not imagining this?

Zola1 · 24/02/2023 21:30

I don't think anyone cares like you imagine they do. I work in a professional job and have a floral tattoo sleeve and a number of ear piercings and no one is interested.
My 13 year old literally has a double helix piercing..deeply uninteresting.

Tinkerloo · 24/02/2023 21:46

I have a few different piercings and I’ve had both very professional jobs and not so professional ones. No one bats an eyelid. Honestly, I think you’re being overly sensitive. Usually when people point mine out it’s because they’re interested. Some might be surprised as to look at me you probably wouldn’t have me down as someone with piercings. The one I get asked most about is my industrial bar but it’s usually just to ask how painful it was.

QueenofLouisiana · 24/02/2023 21:50

I've got a total of 5 ear piercings, including a helix and a daith. Very few people would notice I think, even in my job. In fact, I used them as an example of vocabulary in a Year 6 lesson this week. Kids looked, accepted the meaning in this real-life situation and moved on.

bellac11 · 24/02/2023 21:51

Ive got one, was persuaded that it would cure my migraines (it didnt). Im older than you, got it about 5 years ago. People might spot it from time to time and ask about it but nothing more. The mosts problems it causes is when Im having an operation or scan or something and I cant take mine out.

Authorisatingarchibald · 24/02/2023 21:54

totally in your head. A helix piercing is pretty run of the mill. I’ve helix daith conch nose - and a big job shock horror. Literally nobody will care. I’m 50

britinnyc · 24/02/2023 21:57

This is weird to me, I live in California these days and am 47 and work in the legal field and have 4 piercings in my left ear including a helix. No one has ever batted an eyelid, I would say the majority of women I know have multiple piercings these days, an earring stack is a very popular look and it is a running joke about middle aged mums getting multiple piercings as some sort of minor midlife crisis!

GoodChat · 24/02/2023 22:00

Yeah it's definitely in your head. I can't imagine people even actually comment often enough for you to have noticed.

MissMaple82 · 24/02/2023 22:05

It's hardly unusual or wacky!

WombatsAndGumTrees · 24/02/2023 22:06

It's either in your head or people think you're not the type to have piercings. I can imagine it as people are usually shocked to find out I have a small tattoo because, "You just don't seem the type!" (Whatever the type is). A helix piercing seems very tame though.

FannyFifer · 24/02/2023 22:11

Honestly I don't think anyone would think anything about it, piercing & tattoos are pretty mainstream among all age groups these days.

DrManhattan · 24/02/2023 22:13

No one cares

Ceryneianhind · 24/02/2023 22:15

completely imagining it, seriously - i'm 50s and have 2
