Done something stupid - oven/microwave related.

Can you tell me if you have done similar and how you fixed it?

I used “sainsburys oven cleaner” in an oven/microwave combo and sprayed onto the elements at the top. I heard like a pop sound and light went off (obviously it was off but light switched on when opened). I quickly switched off from main power and on reading the instructions it says not to spray on elements. I know I’m really stupid and should have read first. I’ve used a damp cloth to wipe away. I just turned in and tried to use but little smoke came out. Any advice?

Don't worry too much it was probably just the cleaner interfering with the electrics of the light. For future reference you should unplug an electric oven or microwave off before cleaning.

There's not much harm that can be done so just go ahead and let it run for a bit. I'd run it as an oven first, maybe 20 mins or so, keeping an eye on it. A bit of smoke is normal after cleaning but if there's acrid/black smoke switch it off, the machine's fucked.

If the oven run goes OK try it as a microwave. Put a bowl of water in it and run it until the water boils. Again, keep a close eye on it and switch it off if there's acrid smoke, it means it's fucked.

If both tests go ok then it should be fine to use as normal. If either test fails - smoke or just not working - then I'm afraid you'll have to bin it. Depending on the size you might be able to squeeze it in your normal bin (wrap it in a bin bag once cooled), otherwise you'll have to leave it for the council to collect or take it to the tip.
