I am so fed up of a lack of food in shops.

This has been going on for a few years but is only getting worse. I had to go to 3 supermarkets before I found some eggs. No lettuce at all, a few packs of salad tomatoes available in one supermarket, loads of empty spaces in the fruit and veg section, and in ASDA even the freezers had loads of empty spaces.

Before anyone says yes I know we will not starve, there is enough actual food. But a visit to a supermarket now is a lottery about what will be available and what is missing. And more and more I am having to visit multiple shops to get absolute basics.

2023 - eat Turnips

Root vegetables are called "grandmother's kitchen" in Denmark apparently;
22 Feb 2023
Rema 1000 customers may currently encounter empty vegetable shelves due to cold weather in the Mediterranean region.
In the meantime, Jonas Schrøder from Rema 1000 encourages customers to find "grandmother's kitchen" and remember the season's Danish ingredients.
There are lots of root vegetables, potatoes, leeks and the like. You can find the soup pot and get the root vegetables going...

The customer notice sign on the empty box of vegetables reads;
Due to unusually cold weather in Spain, Italy and Morocco, there is a shortage of supply of cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers and aubergines. Friland produce such as iceberg lettuce, cauliflower, broccoli... etc. are also in limited quantities and sizes right now due to the cold. Unfortunately this looks set to continue in the coming weeks.

Peak turnip eating this century appears to have occurred under Labour;
2008 - thanks to the credit crunch and shrinking household budgets, the humble turnip is staging a comeback across the UK, with one leading supermarket reporting that sales have rocketed by 75% in 12 months.

Are Labour planning to replace food banks with turnips?

Cherrysoup · 01/03/2023 19:31

Climate change might be implicated, maybe? Crops not growing as they should? We import an awful lot from abroad to ensure we have what we want year round. I know some people only eat British (if in the Uk) so only have seasonal food or items that keep well like apples/potatoes etc. people buying almost 30 eggs is not helpful, just do without if possible for a couple of days rather than have large amounts. Reminds me of the covid panic buying madness.

The 'Centre for European Reform' turns out to be a front for oil companies, MI6, and probably the CIA

That's interesting - the CER is also a pro-EU think-tank with offices in London, Brussels and Berlin. From their website -

The Centre for European Reform is a think-tank devoted to making the European Union work better and strengthening its role in the world...

The CER’s engagement with senior figures in Europe is reflected in the speakers we attract to our events. In recent years, guests have included Emmanuel Macron, Margrethe Vestager and Michel Barnier. These high-level contacts enhance the accuracy of our analysis and enable us to refine our proposals, both in publications and in the private briefings that we provide to senior officials, ministers and European commissioners.

Maybe we need a "Buy British" thread?

I don't think any of the fruit and veg I bought today was grown in the U.K.

Are you smoking something? Because if you are I'd stop if I were you 🙄

Hopefully it will have been home-grown organic free-range British cannabis and none of that filthy foreign stuff !

if you don’t find what you want, then make something else instead, get some cookery books

You live in a developed country, work hard and pay high enough taxes för a high qualify infrastructure. Why the hell are people pretending they are in a war rationing situation and doing the best they can?

I live in an EU country. Plenty of food here. Despite the war in ukraine and high inflation.

The uk is a boiled frog country. The situation is not normal. Castigating people for pointing it out just normalises it. You are being so fucked over by the government.

Thank for your contribution Ursula

Went to Sainsbury's earlier today.

Tomatoes shelves were rammes with all sorts of variety including; cherry, organic cherry, vine, salad, pomodoro, etc

Plenty of peppers, lettuce and celery too.

I bought aubergine, peppers and tomatoes. Which were sourced from Spain.
We will save some seeds to grow tomatoes and peppers ourselves this summer. They seem to do pretty well.

Yeh it’s back to full shelves here too

Still hard to get tomatoes round these parts, was in Aldi earlier and was completely empty where the tomatoes should be!
I'm in a town as well with lots of shop choices and several supermarkets, still hard to get hold of so must depend on area 😕

BulldogSpirit · 04/03/2023 08:36

Full shelves in Tesco yesterday. I went later in the day too and the shop was really busy but plenty of fruit and veg including toms, peppers and cucumbers.

As said before: much ado about nothing.

We must have reversed Brexit in the last week since that was the problem some people were saying.

Reverse Brexit!!! They wish 😂

It does get a bit tedious when Brexit is blamed whenever anything goes wrong

This always happens people yell ‘wake up it’s Brexit’ over and over then it passes in a week and they go back to sleep

mydogisthebest · 04/03/2023 14:51

East Midlands and no cucumbers, tomatoes or lettuces to be found anywhere. Tried Sainsbury's, Tesco, 2 Morrison stores, 2 M&S stores, Aldi and Lidl

Quveas · 04/03/2023 14:57

In the North and admittedly rely on delivery as I'm disabled, but I can't recall the last time my shop was missing anything at all.

Wallywobbles · 04/03/2023 15:11

The UK always has someone else to blame (EU, Ukraine, Russia) and usually in that order, but rarely looks at it's own politicians and policies for some reason. It is no one's priority. Least of all its neighbors to whom it owes quite an outstanding bill.

You pay more for electricity (than we do from EDF at 0.10€ and 0.15€/kWh), food, rent etc but you earn increasingly less. Everyone in my company (France) got a 5% inflation increase. That doesn't seem to have happened much in the UK. Your health service is free at the point of use but totally fucked. Schools can't get teachers, or even students to train as teachers. Nurses and doctors are leaving in droves.

It's a weird dystopian existence where MN posters go but in my local Waitrose everything's fine so I dont understand what you mean.

The boiled frog analogy is pretty fitting.

OrangeBlossum · 04/03/2023 15:18

Yabu. I am amazed you have the time or interest to trawl supermarkets looking for missing items, eggs and tomatoes.

Why don't you just eat alternative foods that are available? Sounds like you don't value your time much.

Just because shelves are fully stocked where you are it doesn't mean that's the case everywhere.

I don't have the time but basic food stuffs are just that, the basics.

Why should people have to give up a normal British way of life and just make do with whatever is available instead. We're not living in East Germany in 1984.

rioseco · 04/03/2023 18:28

No shortages at all in Sainsbury's. Tons of tomsConfused

pasta4metonight · 04/03/2023 18:48

There are plenty of things in the shops that you can buy to eat. Some people on here really need to get their priorities right. People using food banks don't have masses of choice.
So...stop banging on about brexit and the Daily Mail because it's boring, read / listen to the news to see what is happening outside that tiny bubble you call your life.

They should've put "the freedom to eat only what's available at food banks" on the big red bus of lies.
