I am so fed up of a lack of food in shops.

This has been going on for a few years but is only getting worse. I had to go to 3 supermarkets before I found some eggs. No lettuce at all, a few packs of salad tomatoes available in one supermarket, loads of empty spaces in the fruit and veg section, and in ASDA even the freezers had loads of empty spaces.

Before anyone says yes I know we will not starve, there is enough actual food. But a visit to a supermarket now is a lottery about what will be available and what is missing. And more and more I am having to visit multiple shops to get absolute basics.

In London where I live, I have not encountered this problem at all, maybe is worse outside of London?
if you don’t find what you want, then make something else instead, get some cookery books

Same here, I am on the outskirts of London and have had no problem at all with items.

piedbeauty · 26/02/2023 08:19

Bloody hell. We've had a shortage of a few out-of-season veg for a few days. Everyone whining about it, grow up. It's nothing like living in Russia 🙄🙄 What a first-world problem!

Op, have you considered buying a local veg box?

Eat seasonally
nobody has to eat tomato and cucumber and won’t starve without it
we should be eating seasonal produce which grows in Abundance in the winter here in Great Britain
this includes root veg such as swede turnip carrots ect
we all want a Mediterranean diet in the middle of winter in a Northern European island (Great Britain )
there is an abundance of food in the shops , try living in countries where going to the supermarket is something that can only be imagined in one’s dreams
plenty of veg in Asda yesterday albeit no tomato’s but so what
same with Tesco Asda Sainsbury’s full of meat fish veg and tinned- the usual
I don’t see what you are complaining about
have you noticed that many cultures don’t even shop at supermarkets, I live in a area which is predominantly populated by Arabs and they do not shop in supermarkets I’ve observed but rather shops and markets selling culturally appropriate food to them which are full of delicious ingredients including exotic fruit and veg we wouldn’t ordinarily find in traditional supermarkets, try those

Many people around the world still don’t have a lot of things. What’s your point. Or do you just like to spout nonsense. Without proper punctuation and paragraph spacing to boot.

This!

Ah ok. So if you’re not being bombed Russia and starving, you should just put and up and shut up. These people really need to pick their bar up for the floor, because they’re trippin’ over it. Oh and also, it doesn’t make you sound as stoic and virtuous as you think it does.

You have to be more imaginative when shopping. We lived overseas in the '80s and '90s in countries where food supply was erratic. We just made up the weeks menu as we shopped dependent on what was available. Makes life a lot less stressful than going to a half empty supermarket with a rigid food plan.

Oh I see. It’s imagination that’s is lacking. Hey everyone, next time you want cucumber or tomato in your salad, just imagine it’s there. Works a treat and you won’t even miss the real thing.

It's a bit pathetic to get this worked up over no tomatoes. I've been cooking healthy meals this week with no issues as I expect most others have.

Untitledsquatboulder · 26/02/2023 08:53

Plenty of fresh produce in the Ukraine @sst1234 . This is the result of Brexit, so no we don't fucking get to complain - this is what we voted for. 🇬🇧

Seems a lot of trouble to go to before putting them in the bin.

Southern turnips (and parsnips) are just cattle food - horrible things.

Northern and Scottish turnips (or as southerners call them "swedes") are, however delicious.

I always did wonder what the difference was between a turnip and a swede.

Horrible food either way

Far too sensible

My only issue with turnips and swedes is that you need power tools to cut them. Tips anyone?

You don’t need to imagine tomatoes in your salad, you can just eat something else when you can’t get tomatoes out of season. It’s really not the end of the world.

If you’re making soup or mash with them, scrub them, brush with a little oil then roast them whole in the oven on a baking tray until soft enough to cut more easily. Also works for pumpkins and squash.

Oh FFS. It's not 1942. We're a G7 country which has imposed sanctions on itself.
Farmers can't afford to grow food at the moment because we have the highest energy prices in the world and they can't afford to heat greenhouses and then can't get anyone to pick what they do grow.
These are the sunlit uplands we were promised and going all 'make do and mend' about it is nauseating.
You'll be telling us all to go back to coal fires and candlelight next... except almost nobody has a fireplace any more.
The British need to be less compliant. These bastards were shovelling hundreds of millions to their mates for PPE while telling us to eat turnips.

How is it Brexit? Brexit makes it harder for us to export. It doesn't make it harder for supermarkets to import. If it was purely Brexit we'd have had pepper shortages for years.

Sorry but I'm in Ireland and our only real shortages are for goods coming through the UK. I was in Tesco last week and the fruit and veg area had lots of bare shelves. It was eerie. Unlike in Dunnes and Aldi where I normally shop and I can get everything I want between the two. There are definitely some shortages at times but I buy at least two packs of cherry tomatoes, snack peppers and mini cucumbers and have never not been able to get them in Aldi if they aren't in Dunnes or vice versa. The number one main annoyance is bananas. It's very hard to get lovely yellow ones as they are nearly all tinged green, if not mostly green.

Compliant? How? Surely refusing to let your mental health be damaged due to a minor inconvenience is the best thing you can possibly do for yourself.

This has nothing to do with „weather“ or war. There are no shortages in Europe at all so why gaslight people in the UK?

Ireland is in Europe;

www.irishtimes.com/food/2023/02/21/supply-of-vegetables-to-ireland-disrupted-by-poor-weather-and-energy-costs/

www.breakingnews.ie/business/fruit-and-vegetable-shortage-due-to-poor-weather-in-spain-irish-retailers-say-1436373.html

This supermarket in the Netherlands has a shortage of bell peppers, cauliflower, broccoli and iceberg lettuce due to bad weather in Spain (16 Feb 2023);

www.freshplaza.com/europe/article/9503487/no-end-to-cauliflower-shortage-in-sight-yet/

You're an adult, presumably, so surely you can read what those articles are actually about? Each and every one of them has a person representing an organisation that grows or supplies fruit and vegetables and is currently requesting extra government financing to cover increased energy prices. Those are campaigning articles. Irish people in Ireland keep on posting on this thread saying we don't have issues. So learn to read what articles actually mean before you keep on posting them, over and over and over again.

Well ... I think many posters have pinned Clav as a ChatGPT prototype for a while. Certainly on the Brexit forum, where their recent absence has raised the level of debate considerable.

(I think the giveaway was a post that ended "Brexit is better with Chrome")

Does that mean I've just participated in teaching an AI and therefore brought us closer to the singularity and terminators?😰

Quite possibly 😀

For various reasons I'm embroiled in some AI wrangling at them moment. (When you are old and ugly people sometimes foolishly ask you what your experience tells you).

Currently it seems no one has twigged that if we teach AI ourselves (and let's face it, who else will), then axiomatically it will learn to lie. Because that's what we do.

So when you ask ChatGPT, or Bing, or any one of the heavily publicised "AI" engines a question - especially a complex question - the answer could well be a lie. Which will lead to another round of "AI" to interrogate the first "AI" as to whether it was lying. Or not. Of course it could lie too.

Lying is a clear marker of intelligence. In fact (although I don't have the tweed jacket to be an authority on it) I would suggest it's a definitive marker of intelligence. We know animals are capable of lying. So something thinking "AI" won't is low energy thinking. Almost tailor made for a Brexiteer you might say.

I suspect I have the power to end the universe as we know it, if I ask ChatGPT whether Cryto is a good investment. Luckily I have sworn to use my powers for good.

Seems the coffee is working !.

That's funny. Not too long ago I was having a discussion with a guy who's studying AI, about medical AI. And a point I made, which he hadn't thought about, was that not all doctors have the best intentions and even those who do, may be capable of lying to cover up mistakes. So when you think about teaching medical AI, starting from a presumption that all doctors try their best, is a good way to fuck up your AI.

SerendipityJane · 26/02/2023 11:18

So when you think about teaching medical AI, starting from a presumption that all doctors try their best, is a good way to fuck up your AI.

When "AI" lies, it will be a feature. not a bug. If your "AI" has picked up the idea that it's role is to ensure the continued survival of the human race, and it works out that is best served by halving the population, then it will deliver results that achieve that aim. This isn't a belated plug for a Terminator reboot. It's how logic works. We're probably already past the point where it would suit some people for "AI" to present results they want it to present. In much the same way as 1,000 years ago it suited some people to hear that God wanted you to be poor. Or to go on a crusade. Or to kill the people in the next country. And so on.

As long as "AI" sticks to what it really is at the moment - which is fancy pattern matching - we can leave it be.
