I am so fed up of a lack of food in shops.

This has been going on for a few years but is only getting worse. I had to go to 3 supermarkets before I found some eggs. No lettuce at all, a few packs of salad tomatoes available in one supermarket, loads of empty spaces in the fruit and veg section, and in ASDA even the freezers had loads of empty spaces.

Before anyone says yes I know we will not starve, there is enough actual food. But a visit to a supermarket now is a lottery about what will be available and what is missing. And more and more I am having to visit multiple shops to get absolute basics.

YAWWNNNNN. How do you explain the food shortages in loads of other countries then? Is that Brexit too? You lost. Deal with it. You can't be butthurt til the end of time ya know. Wink

Ok, its not just Brexit, it is climate change and Brexit, climate change which should have been tackled 30 years ago, and Brexit in which we deliberately self harmed for no known reason

I campaigned against Brexit mostly on the grounds we were cutting ourselves off from energy supplies, and the cost of energy would rise out of control. Last summer we were paying 5000% more for energy from Europe than we were prebrexit. Wholly predictable, and wholly predicted. This makes it totally impossible to grow the greenhouse crops that we are used to relying on. ( among other things) Of course greenhouse crops were always going to be unsustainable in the long run, but Brexit has accelerated this process out of control

No other countries are being hit this hard

Of course I am "dealing with it"- there is no choice - but when it comes to a discussion about what is going so badly wrong, and is going to go worse, then I have no qualms about laying the blame where it needs to be laid, and sorry if you find that boring, but there is no getting away from the fact that Brexit has royally messed us up, and no one can sensibly pretend otherwise

Just back from the greengrocer. Absolutely everything in stock. I almost bought cherry tomatoes just for the sake of it.

You profligate fool!

You will be the undoing of us all!!!

😂

I agree. There are just too many people now competing for a livelihood, clean water, fossil fuel, food, for things to ever go back to the prosperity of the 50s-80s. That was a brief blip in human history.

Combine with climate change and the decimation of the insects/wildlife, and we are pretty screwed. I can't imagine how grim things will be 30-50 years from now. If only people would think beyond their immediate "wants" and stop overpopulating, stop using pesticides, stop guzzling fuel.

This, in nutshell.

Stop spreading misinformation. The colder weather hasnt affected salad crops in any country in Europe…never mind EU….we are the only country. Ireland has full supplies…delivered on ships and planes…how come? Our suppliers in the EU are no longer willing to put their lorry drivers through 78 hours of waiting at ports for endless paper work. Most of our tomatoes came from Holland…they have a huge excess…the ones we used to have….but their drivers get paid per job…not per hour…so they wont drive to the UK. BREXIT is the reason. Every single supermarket boss bears this out.

That is misinformation. Countries in the EU are affected such as Netherlands and Ireland.

I did my Tesco shop this morning and got peppers, small tomatoes and cucumber. Lots of cucumbers on the shelves, but the peppers and toms were low and the staff member said they keep them out the back and restock every now and then. They are not putting them out in one go. There was no restrictions on how many you could buy, so that must be their strategy for dealing with this.

Plus to the poster saying they dont complain in the Netherlands, have you never #nexit on Twitter. They froth just as much as Brits😂

PillBoxes · 24/02/2023 11:34

Brits don't complain to the right people. To each other yes, but at the ballot box? No, to their MP? No.

Make do and carry on. Find a new recipe, go to a charity shop, get a top up job, eat crap because it's available and cheaper etc. Shrug shoulders, rant online. That's easy. Maybe it is the fear of losing the image of a "Great Proud Nation" or hubris. It is something that is whistling past the graveyard anyway.

The EU is NOT as affected as Britain is, not by a long shot. They work together you see, and are not isolationist and insular like the Brits.

Natsku · 24/02/2023 11:37

Europe is not affected the way the UK is. I'm in Finland and we have plenty, I just searched the Finnish news to see if there was any reports of shortages and can't find any except for potential shortages relating to the strikes. A Brits abroad group I'm in had people posting from all over the EU saying no issues in their countries. Nowhere is rationing bloody tomatoes because nowhere else do lorry drivers have to queue for a ridiculous length of time just to enter the country and so refuse to deliver there.

MarshaBradyo · 24/02/2023 11:40

Ha same here I was going to post a pic of the tomatoes but thought sod it

Arrrrrrragghhh · 24/02/2023 11:58

@Natsku I haven’t been to Finland but just out of interest how much are you paying for a lettuce,a cucumber and a packet of tomatoes?

lazycats · 24/02/2023 12:01

The fact that the BBC even has a section in the news story asking "is this because of brexit?" shows how doomed by association it all is. Every economic hit is going to have that lingering question.

Emotionalstorm · 24/02/2023 12:09

I've never encountered any stock issues since the pandemic. I feel a bit left out.

I'm going to the shop after swimming so I'll check then but normal tomatoes were just under 7 euros per kilo last time I went

xsquared · 24/02/2023 12:42

They were discussing this topic on Jeremy Vine Radio 2. I'm listening on rewind.

No they dont. I beling to several European wide groups having lived i Europe in the past. The Netherlands have an excess of tomatoes, the ones they used to send us. Ireland is awash with salad goods. We have members from all areas taking photos of local supermarkets all have tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers. We are now on rations for these. Stop repeating government bullshit, read information not produced in the UK. This country like Russia now, with the papers telling us what the government want us to know. We used to laugh at Russia and ask why they were so naive and gullible…now we know.

You are not looking hard enough @Emotionalstorm Surely you have seen an empty shelf? Empty shelves did not occur pre 2016.

If you scour every news media looking for snippets, disingenuous UK forecasts or some random's gospel truth on Twitter, you will find Brexit is to blame for everything.

The EU has no issues. None.

If we was still in the EU none of this would be a problem. Everything would be peachy 😂

But I've just been shopping and got my toms, 2 giant yellow peppers and 2 cucumbers (big ones as well). I'm in England ooop North and no issues😂

I did read the Irish Times and the NL Times!!!

So you bought your veg….hence there is no UK shortage. Right, not a member of Mensa then?

Im in Ireland. Haven't noticed any shortages here tbh.

BulldogSpirit · 24/02/2023 13:11

But there's lots of other posters saying no shortages in their area too. That's the point, it's not the end of the world doomster scenerio you believe.

Some areas in the UK have rations. Some don't.

We will all survive a few weeks of salad shortages in the depths of winter.

Now if it was a shortage of McVities Chocolate Digestives I'd be up in arms 😂

lazycats · 24/02/2023 13:19

In conclusion: This problem is totally affecting all european countries and also there is no problem because I saw veg at my shop.

ilovesooty · 24/02/2023 13:22

xsquared · 24/02/2023 08:06

I saw this yesterday on FB from a local independent grocer.

Another good reason to support independent shops if you can.

That's exactly why I've put in an order with an independent supplier. Well said.

SerendipityJane · 24/02/2023 13:22

But what to do with turnips ?

I am so fed up of a lack of food in shops.
MintJulia · 24/02/2023 13:28

I'm using it as a motivation to add a few new recipes to my repertoire.

I've rooted out my DM's old winter cookbook from when shopping seasonally was a necessity. So far, some good additions. 😊

And it says young snowball turnips should be washed, trimmed and simmered gently in chicken stock with a few herbs.

Do tell us where the loads of other countries experiencing similar shortages are.

Snoken · 24/02/2023 13:44

To those saying that this is a problem in the EU too, I just read my Swedish newspaper where they are reporting on these shortages in the UK. They wouldn't do that if this was a Europe wide problem, it is a UK problem and it's making the news outside of the UK too so it must be a faily large problem.
