I am so fed up of a lack of food in shops.

This has been going on for a few years but is only getting worse. I had to go to 3 supermarkets before I found some eggs. No lettuce at all, a few packs of salad tomatoes available in one supermarket, loads of empty spaces in the fruit and veg section, and in ASDA even the freezers had loads of empty spaces.

Before anyone says yes I know we will not starve, there is enough actual food. But a visit to a supermarket now is a lottery about what will be available and what is missing. And more and more I am having to visit multiple shops to get absolute basics.

In the last week I've been shopping on Friday evening, Saturday morning, Monday, Tuesday and Thursday evening just to try and get something that will make a complete meal! I don't have time to be running round supermarkets nearly every day just to source vegetables. Not seen any tomatoes or peppers, finally found cucumber last night and other green veg is in short supply too.

Maybe people need to support British farmers then, they've long been neglected.

I agree

RedAndBlueStripedGolfingUmbrella · 23/02/2023 09:47

Seriously - where is anyone tantrumming?! 😕
Are some posters ok?! 😁

I don’t believe you. Not for a minute. You can’t complete a meal?? I have heard it all now.

I don’t know some have lost all touch with reality.

TempsPerdu · 23/02/2023 09:50

Clavinova
German men have the lowest vegetable consumption in Europe apparently -according to a recent scientific report

I really don’t see how that’s relevant? It doesn’t mean the fruit and vegetables aren’t available in the shops. And no one is claiming that the German diet is the pinnacle of healthy living.

ChungusBoi · 23/02/2023 09:50

Yes @TempsPerdu - it’s not just about tomatoes out of season - it’s a symptom that our collective food security is at risk and as @sydneysunset demonstrates, we all have to get used to paying more for fresh food, if we want growers to keep growing for our tables.

RedAndBlueStripedGolfingUmbrella · 23/02/2023 09:28

But now the gap is far starker, and where there are genuine shortages countries are clearly supplying themselves and their EU neighbours first
Yes, this - it's common sense that produce coming from the EU will supply the EU countries first before supplying elsewhere.

Oh fgs. It's nothing to do with wanting to keep stuff within the EU. It's because other EU countries pay more than we do! So if farmers have a limited supply of broccoli and UK is only willing to pay 30% less than Germany you are going to choose Germany!

You clearly didn’t read the post - it’s repellent that people on here are whinging about tomatoes as innocent people die in Ukraine.

Its utterly repellent

There are more wars going on than just in Ukraine, Palestine,Syria etc. There always has been, as a british person you should know you are barely ever not involved in one.

FabFitFifties · 23/02/2023 09:51

NE England here, last weeks shop in ASDA, there was an entirely empty side of black boxes on one section of the F&V section the salad type vegetables would normally be found. Happening frequently. There were no carrots either. It's a struggle if you have a ND child, who might only eat one vegetable and one fruit, regardless of what is on offer.

Assuming you are not a British person then, respectfully I would remind you we are not involved directly in any wars currently. What is your agenda on here?

So are all the shops rationing vegetables Labour voters?

Yeah, someone make that comment you're replying to make sense lol 😕😂
Not only what you said, but also "anyone who disagrees with me must be a Labour voter!"
Eh?! 😁

So go to a farm shop or expensive greengrocer. Or accept you can't have it for a while.

I agree

I agree too, and expand schemes to encourage new entrants.

But retailers also need to look after their overseas growers properly too, if we want to continue to eat varied veg over winter.

I would also remind you that the veg and fruit issue here is a direct result of the Ukrainian war.

All the hellfire posters ARE clearly labour supporters sowing discontent and in some cases outright lies. Fact.

Putting fact on the end of a sentence doesn't automatically make it one however much you want it to be.

Wheresthebeach · 23/02/2023 09:56

I share your frustration OP. I'm in London and often now go to multiple places to get the shopping. I've told DD that its now a case of 'what's available', not 'what we want'.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 23/02/2023 09:56

No shortages in my online shop in Sheffield.

Although they pick the order from a massive Sainsbo that no one goes to.

If you hear different experiences and opinions as tantrumming and screaming, well - there's no helping you there lol
