To want the 90s back?

I know I am of course. It can't happen and I'm so grateful for that time but I miss it. I want to go clubbing without looking like a dodgy old person and dance to the verve and the chemical brothers

I take it none of you were paying a mortgage?

15%.

Tgbbb · 23/02/2023 00:10

I was a kid in the 90s and I would LOVE to go back. So carefree, my gameboy, the best music, my cat, the clothes. Agh. Makes me so sad I'll never feel that happiness again

Rellywobble · 23/02/2023 00:11

@VeniVidiWeeWee ..absolutely not ! Too busy enjoying life!

Tune

Tune, indeed!!

Justanotherlurker · 23/02/2023 00:13

I was a Dj for a sound system that did illegal raves in the early 90's, did all the mega clubs at the time in the UK and took the specific UK scene abroad to Europe, seen the transformation of established media like the Guardian go from 'this is threat', to 'look at how great this youth movement is' when it started to gain traction.

I'm in weird situation of missing my extreme drug fuelled youth, not wanting my children to get into the sketchy situations I did, but in a weird way kind of do. Want my children to be part of some revolutionary music defining era, whilst also realising that I am becoming the very person I rebelled against in my youth.

DogSaysWoof · 23/02/2023 00:13

1996 - 2006 was probably one of the best decades I can remember. Some great music, great films and great TV.

(It may have something to do with leaving school and being in my teens and early 20s.. but we still had great music, TV and films.)

No but rent and bills was always at the front of my mind

my going out budget stretched far though - and salary in proportion to rent wasn't anything like it is now.

I was deeply embarrassed when my clothes took on the damp smell of the flat though, but smoking in clubs and bars disguised it pretty quick!

i think a lot of us had day jobs, evening jobs and then kept weekends for clubbing. But occasionally you'd go for breakfast at 6am after the club closed the wait staff were still a bit high from wherever they'd been 😂

Johnisafckface · 23/02/2023 00:16

Me too! It was the best times of my life. If I could go back I would in a heartbeat 💗

EmmaEmerald · 23/02/2023 00:18

yes! DJs became recognised as artists.

Listened to the Verve, (contemplating the band's name!), 'Bitter sweet symphony' or whatever it's called, R2, drive time, 5.20pm this evening.

I'm 60.

Oooh do you remember Bedlam, Spiral Tribe etc or weren't you involved so much in the underground scene?

Simplethingsmarcg · 23/02/2023 00:21

I was at Victoria Park seeing Disclosure in the summer and was telling the 20 year olds that we were the original ravers who'd made all the dance music festivals possible, they were in awe! I felt old but proud

Fordian · 23/02/2023 00:22

JulianFawcettMP · 22/02/2023 22:48

It's such a patronising and annoying thing to say but youth is wasted on the young. I should have done more and made the most of it. Although to be fair I did love those times and enjoyed them. Just wish I'd been more confident

I wish the social mores of the time hadn't prevented us from having the time of our lives. I wish I'd fucked far more people, for a start. I'm no lightweight, I wasn't 'saving it for marriage' as my b. 1933 mother would have liked; as 'men don't like spoiled goods' (actual quote). But I was far more of a prude than I should have been.

I feel the same. The nostalgia is actually painful. I was born in 1981 so was a teenager all through the 90s; but I can't help but feel that I'd have had an even better time if I'd been old enough to go to clubs/raves/gigs/Ibiza etc in the early 90s....

BashfulClam · 23/02/2023 00:30

I’ve been feeling this too and actually feel a bit homesick for them. It was my era and I was young and could do anything. Now I feel old and bewildered a lot.

RLScott · 23/02/2023 00:33

JulianFawcettMP · 22/02/2023 22:44

Not sure why but I feel so sad about it tonight. We were so lucky to grow up output social media and all that pressure.

100% agree with that. I’m not on social media as it’s toxic for the mind in constantly seeking validation and it also deprives you from experiencing life to the full. ”Oh X didn’t like my picture”.... “I’m gonna take pictures absolutely everything I do including what I’m eating for dinner” (no-one gives a shite)...and “rather than take in what i’m seeing (concert, football match etc.) I’m going to record it all on my phone”.

Recording family/friends moments are fine (although in small amounts, ultimate you want to experience it now rather than just record it for later)

Musically though, pretty forgettable decade. The ‘80s is a much better decade.

Yup, it was a complete switch from the left leaning middle class, you had to be there at the forefront back then but we all often joke about how if it all took off today, Guardian articles would be about how the early rave scene was problematic because of the influence of the 80's casuals

smileladiesplease · 23/02/2023 00:37

I had my second child in 91 and my twins in 99 and yes so so bloody glad they had their formative years and teenage times pre internet in the main.

The 80s were far better though .)

Aphrathestorm · 23/02/2023 00:42

My dc are teens and they wish they were teens in the 90s.

theycallmestacie · 23/02/2023 00:43

Yanbu. My mid teens to mid 20s were in the 90s. I'd go straight back if I could.

Spectre8 · 23/02/2023 00:44

One thing I have noticed amongst people who lived through the 90s or is jsut millennial.in general is that we value experiences the most. All my life nd it still is..about having great moments and experiences I care less about whether I have the latest phone etc. My money goes on those experiences whether its going to festivals, music events or travelling to beautiful places.

It could be because we didn't have tech back then and generations born now do seem to more focused on things than creating moments.

Well that's my observation

Ndd135632 · 23/02/2023 00:47

I did glasto in 1991, all the small indie gigs and now nearly 50 go to Tomorrowland. You can still do it kids

smileladiesplease · 23/02/2023 00:50

This may be age?

It's not what it was in my day. My 89 year old dad says this

'Twas ever thus :)

I loved tomorrowland went for 3 yrs straight but do other festivals instead now. But their set up is still one of the best

Yeah did some gigs with Spiral Tribe, was bit more underground than that though did a lot in Chicago, San Fran, did the usual Ibiza route and ended up doing sat/sunday sunset spots at cafe del mar, started out doing dingy warehouses, one of the most memorable was in a quarry where our generator for lighting packed up so the only lighting was from fire barrels and car headlights in the deepest depths of derbyshire. Was a moment of bliss to see thousands of people peak on mdna because of the tune I decided to play.

I will take that to the grave and want my children to experience the same in some way
