Eeek! Mouse in kitchen!

Hohumbugho · 20/02/2023 21:30

Just walked into the kitchen, switched the light on and spotted a mouse scurry across the kitchen floor and disappear under the cabinets!

DH casually wants to wait until tomorrow to set traps even though we have some somewhere (we have some - humane ones- from when we saw mouse signs a few years ago). I’m totally freaked out and googling ‘Will a mouse come upstairs?’! Bye bye decent night’s sleep.

AIBU to be this bothered?! 😱

My cat likes to bring them in from the cold still alive and then doesn’t bother with them so I put traps down Nutella seems work well

Hohumbugho · 20/02/2023 22:58

Right I’ve locked down for the night. Didn’t have any peppermint oil, but shoved some Olbas oil on a tissue and left it by our bedroom door for extra protection!

Wish me luck! See you on the other side…hopefully 🙏

My cat brought a mouse in a week or two ago and this is exactly what I did.

I've had mice a couple of times, I found a bit of chocolate works a charm at luring them into a trap.
I was laid in the bath one night and one took a ringside seat on the shelf.
I was half expecting it to come skipping over with a shower cap on, a back scrubber and a towel.
It's mate decided to join me in watching the TV, and it's other mate decided to check out my bedroom.
Meanwhile, my dog just laid there looking daft at them!
I made my own humane traps with two pint milk bottles.

JackiePlace · 20/02/2023 23:41

I don't think the humane traps are a good idea. You're just passing the problem on to someone else.

A quick death is equally humane. Just make sure you get good traps.

And wash all of your dishes, cutlery, silverware, pots & pans etc! The mouse will have been crawling all over everything and mice have no bladders so you can imagine what has been sprinkling all over everything.

JackiePlace · 20/02/2023 23:45

p.s. apparently mouse pee will show up in ultraviolet light, so if you have one of those you could see where it's been. I would still wash everything, though!

I saw one in our kitchen once and told DD when she came in.
To my horror, she just said "Oh. Was it the grey one or the brown one?"
Apparently she'd seen various mice for ages and not mentioned it.

JackiePlace · 21/02/2023 00:13

Just remembering that was in a third floor flat too so they can def get upstairs…

Ha ha, they can literally climb up walls! Oh, you innocent people. 😍

I love that your thread title is “eeek”. You’ve even got the mouse lingo sorted.

I walked into my kitchen one morning holding my 18 month old and there was a mouse running about. She was so excited and 2 months later when I lift her up in the kitchen she points to where she saw the mouse and goes 'eek!' 🐭

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 21/02/2023 00:34

We had them last year and they got upstairs by climbing the lath and plaster inside the walls. They chewed through the carpet in the spare room to get out and had been running all over the bed 🤢.
They'd also been in the main bathroom (luckily not one used at the time as it needed full renovation).

We have a cat and the mice weren't put off at all. I'm just glad they stayed away from the rooms we actually use and stuck to the ones awaiting renovation.

Habreathmint · 21/02/2023 00:43

At least it's not a rat in di kitchen 😂

Hohumbugho · 21/02/2023 07:27

Well I made it through the night without and furry visitors. And even better this morning…we have the suspect in custody! 🎉

I would rather have a mouse bedfellow than a spider 🤔🤷🏻‍♀️

Awh he is so cute ❤️😍

Hohumbugho · 21/02/2023 07:42

@BrokenBonesStixStones much cuter once caught then when running around free to attack last night!!

DD was quite enamoured and sad we can’t keep him lol.

i got woken up by a ‘squeak, squeak’ on Christmas morning last. I think the mouse was right next to our bed. Our cat is happier than ever before because he has slept on our bed every night since.

oioimatey · 21/02/2023 10:26

Got 'im! Now lay the trap again. Mooooore peanuts!

TheShellBeach · 21/02/2023 12:03

That mouse looks absolutely enormous, sitting in its humane trap.

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 21/02/2023 12:05

Humane traps aren't humane. They'll just eventually die when you release them in a different location. The humane thing is a swift kill.

JMSA · 22/02/2023 07:00

Yup, in my city you can hear them moving around inside the walls. The crumbling plaster is a dead giveaway Grin
