To ask GP for medical certificate without visit?

Saw the GP in person recently. Sick today and couldn’t attend work. I emailed to request a medical cert as I had been in recently and didn't want to take up another appointment. Today’s symptoms are related to the original reason that I spoke to GP. Obviously will pay fee for cert or whatever is needed. AIBU to email requesting this or should I have made another apt? GP surgeries in Ireland are so busy at the moment so I thought this was best.

It used to be they could issue one if they had seen you within 7 days of the date you want it from. I don’t know if that still stands since covid though. I think it’s a reasonable thing to do, worst that can happen is they’ll say no, then you can go in and get one.

I don't think it's unreasonable asking, but it depends... were you likely to still be ill, how long ago is recently, how long do you want to be off for, what's their usual policy on these things...
I'm in Ireland, I could probably get a phone appt with my gp for it rather than go in.

Can you not self certify? It's five days where I work.

Sorry, just realised you are Ireland and it may be different.
