Ridiculous cough

Milkand2sugarsplease · 19/02/2023 18:54

AIBU to beg you lovely lot for your magic cough cures.

I've had whatever bloody cold thing is doing the rounds for 10 days now and the cold part has cleared up - no sniffles, no sneezes etc. but the cough and sore throat is ridiculous.
My throat feels tight and sore and the tickle that keeps making me cough is so violent for want of a better word.

I've had no sleep for a week because every time I lie down it ramps up even more.

Covid test has always been negative and no white spots on tonsils etc so "just" a cough but my god it's getting me down now!!!!

No answers for you but as I am down with exactly the same I am following!

Ladybirdbookworm · 19/02/2023 18:57

Me too

IndiaDreamer · 19/02/2023 18:58

I feel your pain, I get a cough every winter and never been a smoker!

Fluids, fluids, fluids!

It's the only thing that ever helped, a bottle of water with you at all times!

Vloader23 · 19/02/2023 19:00

I find some basic supermarket cough medicine soothes the throat a bit.

You could also try steaming?

Paythosebitchesnomind269 · 19/02/2023 19:08

I had it - ate tons of pineapple everyday and that helped x

Milkand2sugarsplease · 19/02/2023 19:09

I've just got some vaporub to try a steam tonight.

Got the bottle of water on the go at all times and an endless supply of Jakemans, Halls Soothers etc

It literally just hits at any given moment but because it's a tickle rather than a cough, it makes me cough and then I end up feeling sick from coughing. I'm so ready for this to bugger off now.

Sorry to all you others who are suffering too!!! Fingers crossed for a speedy recovery!!

Oh same here, the cough has given me a headache and I was sick from coughing last night! Can’t wait for some relief from it, just enough to sleep would be sufficient!

HedgehogPrincess · 19/02/2023 19:12

Do you have asthma? If so, inhalers should help. Even without wheeze or breathing problems, coughs can be asthma related. May be worth asking your doc if inhalers can help even if not asthmatic too. Otherwise constant hot drinks, I know it’s a pain.

Milkand2sugarsplease · 19/02/2023 19:20

Thanks all,

No asthma so no inhalers.

I've never drunk so much in my life as I have the last week - water, warm vimto, tea. I daren't go anywhere without a drink with me.

I don't think it helps that I give myself wind between how much I'm drinking and then taking in air when I'm coughing so between coughing fits I've just ended up burping loads.

I wouldn't care but the cold bit earlier on was really short lived and nothing major - a bit of a sore throat, a bit of a sniffle, a few sneezes. And then, bam, hit with this stupid tickle that just won't shift.

Lots of warm liquid. Honey, fresh lemon and ginger. A humidifier in your bedroom and don't sleep flat.

Castle8 · 19/02/2023 19:24

Oh and Piriton

RedCarsGoFaster · 19/02/2023 19:28

A bottle of pholcodine linctus. About £4-5 in a pharmacy. Hard to get hold of at the moment with all the winter viruses, but works a treat.

Not an instant cure for everyone, I find 2-3 doses are needed before it kicks in but it's the only way DH and I have slept for several nights now. It is an antitussive, so literally suppresses the cough and is the most effective one out there.

Only use if yours is a dry cough though, not if you're coughing up gunk.

Margarita45 · 19/02/2023 19:34

If you find the cure do let me know! I’ve got DS (6yo) down with it. Cough lasted over a week with no signs of improving. We’re on day 4 of no sleep, using humidifier, calcough, calpol, olbas…

I don’t know whether it’s been covid and the implications on a cough that’s made me feel like I want I pull my ears off if I hear one more. I simply cannot take it.

LizzyELane · 19/02/2023 19:38

I had exactly this in December, a relentlous cough for ages, like a feather was tickling my tonsils, sometimes every few minutes. I've never gagged/retched so much in my life and the only relief came from forcefully gulping cold water which I kept in bottles next to me, I was then also constantly weeing! It was really miserable but a course of clarithromycin cleared it up.

Bourbanbiscuit · 19/02/2023 19:41

Feel for you, I'm on second round of antibiotics and still coughing, absolutely had enough. I'm with you, constant Halls soothers and Jakemans. Feel like my teeth will be falling out soon.
Wishing you all well

belimoo · 19/02/2023 19:42

I know this sounds ridiculous but I tried it in desperation after being awake with an awful cough for days on end and couldn't believe it when I slept through the night. Before bed, slather your feet in vicks vapour rub and then put socks on over the top.

I've done this a few times now and it's worked every time. I have no idea how or why!

spiderlight · 19/02/2023 19:44

I had this for the whole of December and I've never been so miserable in my life. Dark chocolate helps a bit, and pineapple juice.

Loafbeginsat60 · 19/02/2023 19:49

Vicks on your feet and night nurse

Woahhohoho · 19/02/2023 19:49

We've had it for weeks in our house too. We went to OOH yesterday and it's turned into tonsillitis and a chest infection 🙄.

Sending get well soon vibes your way

AuntyMabelandPippin · 19/02/2023 19:50

I hate to tell you, but I've still got the cough and it started in early December...

Changingmynameyetagain · 19/02/2023 19:56

I would use a decongestant nasal spray to clear any post nasal drip which can make you cough and a numbing throat spray.
ultrachloraseptic.com/can-throat-sprays-help-a-cough/

Also Lots of fluids, sleeping propped up and vaporub everywhere!

Lolliesareonme · 19/02/2023 20:30

DH as had one since Dec too.

Today via Alexa I found bananas are meant to be effective, he had them earlier with honey on.

Just Googled banana cough remedy and came up with an Ayurvedic remedy which is a banana mashed up with a teaspoon of honey and 2 pinches of black pepper. So the pepper addition will be his breakfast.

Never heard about Vicks on feet, but have gone up and done that. He wasn’t happy, but let me do it under duress.

jezlifecoach · 20/02/2023 01:14

Had mine since Boxing Day! Worst cough of my life and the longest lasting. Been on anti biotics but the worst part is the back and rib pain. Genuinely can’t remember my life pre this padding cough. Feel like my lungs have gone to shit and I was perfectly healthy before.

Milkand2sugarsplease · 20/02/2023 04:40

Well aren't you lot reassuring.... 😂😂

Can't believe you've all been poorly for so long!! Hope things improve soon for everyone!
I've never had a worse winter for picking up coughs and colds - it's been horrible. I don't usually fare so badly but this winter has been none stop. I'd literally only just got over one cough/cold when this one started which had already hacked me off but with the cough now, I'm beyond fed up!!!

BruceAndNosh · 20/02/2023 05:34

Persistent tickly cough can often be due to post nasal drip.
Pharmacist recommended anti histamine (I used piriton) as mentioned by another pp
