Lost lottery tickets?

On the NL website it tells you the unclaimed tickets, their worth and where they were purchased?
Wonder how they get lost?
Surely if you buy one you guard it with your life?
How must it be to find out your a winner of a large prize but you can't find your ticket?
How do you live with that?
Just Pondering.

I expect it's people who forget to check the result against their numbers more often than lost tickets.

Maybe the ticket owners died.
Can't claim it then.

No one ever thinks they'll win... so until they do. It's just a bit of paper with no value. Once they realise they've won. It's the "oh sh!t, where is it" panic :)

They say you should sign the back when you buy them as well, to stop anyone else claiming it.
