Struggling to cover greys

drinkingcream · 19/02/2023 09:45

I have grey hair around my hairline. I just cannot cover it. I use the home diy's - L'Oréal. I have dark brown hair and use a shade very similar. Even after leaving on for 40 mins. the result is not great

I know I need to get it done professionally but really cannot afford that - it's would have to be a regular expense and that's just not do able right now.

Does anyone have any solutions / suggestions as to what I may be doing wrong?
Thank you in advance!

Have you tried a different dye?

I use a Clairol Level 2 and it’s pretty good.

I have this problem, it's a pain.

I use a semi permanent every few weeks and in between use John Frieda Defy Grey Shampoo & conditioner, it softens the stark contrast of the grey against the dark hair.

Fakecrazy · 19/02/2023 09:52

I've given up now, but am really excited. The anxiety, the money, the time. Such a waste.

jellyfrizz · 19/02/2023 09:54

Oh and also brunette dry shampoo if I've left it too long between dyes and need to cover up in an emergency.

Winemygoodenemy · 19/02/2023 09:57

I had that issue. Box dye but didn’t cover it. I went blonde to blend the greys in. I found a really good Mobioe hairdresser and it only costs me £50 every 6 weeks.

Bleakhouser · 19/02/2023 09:58

I have this issue too! A small patch at the front that box dyes just don’t seem to touch for some reason…

Vicliz24 · 19/02/2023 09:59

Just a thought but have you thought about actually going grey??

Redglitter · 19/02/2023 10:01

Why not just leave it & embrace the grey

Ponoka7 · 19/02/2023 10:04

I use belle colour dark ash blonde. My greys look like highlights. I'm learning to live with the odd one at the side. When I hit 60 and have mostly grey I'm going rose gold. It's the modern equivalent of a purple rinse. I'm never going to be grey.

Eastereggsboxedupready · 19/02/2023 10:05

The brown shampoo that was out cheap in Home Bargains ages ago is fab!

Intelligenthair · 19/02/2023 10:08

Just for men beard dye is pretty good at doing the pesky greys round my hairline! Better than the ladies options. Colours are limited though.

FarmGirl78 · 19/02/2023 10:08

Best way to avoid this problem is to ignore them. I've skipped grey completely and just get WHITE hairs creeping in to my dark brown hair. My hair is also 'fading' and getting much less vibrant brown. I've always promised myself I'd never dye, and now I'm at that point I see all the white hairs and am very tempted. But I remind myself of the cost, the fact I'd never keep up with my roots, and just the time and faff.

Having white hairs and aging isn't nice, but it's not as bad as the faff of being tied to a dying/roots/dying cycle that once I'm in I'll never escape. I'm just going to let them flourish and appreciate not falling into the vortex.

WandaWonder · 19/02/2023 10:09

I just let it do its own thing

KimberleyClark · 19/02/2023 10:11

Re roots, you can get very good root covering sprays now.

TheABC · 19/02/2023 13:06

I have found the semi permanent dyes do a better job than the permanent. I have also gone a shade lighter than my natural hair in winter ( it's kinder to my skin tone) and does a better job of blending in the greys. I am a dark blonde, so I used the Aussie purple shampoo for maintenance. In the summer, I have given up as I swim/surf three time a week and salt doesn't go well with dye!

PuppyMonkey · 19/02/2023 13:14

I used to use something called Colour Wow - a powder that you can brush onto the bits around your hairline, or your parting etc, worked a treat.

Have gone grey now though so not used it for years and not sure if it’s still around.

WeCome1 · 19/02/2023 13:17

Does going a bit lighter mean that it’s easier to cover?

Blanketpolicy · 19/02/2023 13:20

I grew my dye out during lockdown and embraced the grey. Such a relief, saves lots of time and money.

@Ponoka7...I like the idea of rose gold! I don't want to go grey either.
