Why can’t I sleep?!

TigeToo · 19/02/2023 06:00

Every morning I wake up between 4-5am. Last night I went to bed at 11:40, still woke up at 5am
Im teetotal, not waking with pain or any symptoms, just waking up. Half the time I can’t get to sleep when I do go to bed. I’m not stressed (no more than the average person right now anyway). I’m almost 42.

Why can’t I sleep? 😫

I don't know why you can't get to sleep. Is a specific noise waking you though? Boiler starting / neighbour alarm?

Lostacorn · 19/02/2023 06:22

Have you had a cortisone injection recently. I suffered really bad insomnia after having it. I barely slept for a month.

But I have sleep issues anyway and wake up at 4am every morning no matter what time I go to sleep. There was a thread on here a few weeks ago discussing this and people suggested cutting out sugar. - I have not yet managed this.

Menopause?

RNBrie · 19/02/2023 06:37

Do you consume much caffeine? I used to say caffeine had no affect on me then I gave it up as an experiment with a friend... now I'm almost never awake at 4am and will never go back. I probably drank 2 cups of coffee and 3 or 4 cups of tea a day.

Whatatimetobealivetoday · 19/02/2023 06:38

Do you get enlighten exercise in the day?

And what is your bedtime wind down/routine like? You could try reading, bath, watching a series. Avoid phones.

You could try a sleep
podcast then are very relaxing.

Oh yes same for me with caffeine I can only have 2 coffees and it has to be before 3pm 😂

Same here OP. For me, it's perimenopause which is causing it, along with other things like gut problems. I'm on HRT too but still have bouts of it.

Do you have a lot on your mind at the moment?

MeMyCatsAndMyBooks · 19/02/2023 07:10

Same here op.
No matter what I do I always wake up at 6am, last night I had the grand total of four hours sleep and now I'm wide awake. It's driving me insane and it's not menopause either been like this for years.

mycatsanutter · 19/02/2023 07:24

This was me op , (still is if I do t take the tablets I'm going to recommend ). I wake up between 4 and 5 and toss and turn and would eventually fall back to sleep about 6.45 ish which is no use as I need to get up at 7! After staying up once til 1.15 in the week thinking that I would sleep til 7 and still waking at 4 I had had enough . I did some research an bought magnesium glycinate tablets . I take 2 20 minutes before bed and if I wake up I'm back to sleep within ten minutes.

superstar63 · 19/02/2023 07:56

@mycatsanutter Do you have a link to the ones that work for you?

Also do they work from day one or do they have to build up in your system?

Thanks

mynameisnotkate · 19/02/2023 08:02

This is me too! Really careful to follow good routines - consistent bedtime, wind-down routine, barely any caffeine, good amount of exercise. Still happens. Drives me mad. Am interested in the pills the PP mentioned.

I think it may be menopause related - I’m 47 but don’t have other symptoms. For those that had this in menopause, did you go back to sleeping well after?

KangarooKenny · 19/02/2023 08:03

Peri menopause . Try some magnesium.

ZenNudist · 19/02/2023 08:22

I'm similar. Always been bad at sleeping but nowadays at 44 it's ridiculous. I'm permanently tired. I've tried taking magnesium tablets and I am strictly no caffeine. Alcohol doesn't help either. Exercise seems to make things worse if it's evening Exercise.

Why can’t I sleep?!
mycatsanutter · 19/02/2023 09:08

@superstar63 they worked within 3 days I was so surprised

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 19/02/2023 10:24

Everyone else has already answered... it's your hormones. As well as taking supplements I find having a podcast running all night really helps. Gives my brain something to listen to so it doesn't get bored and wake me up!

superstar63 · 19/02/2023 11:33

@mycatsanutter Thank you, I have tried magnesium in the past but it was no help but maybe should try again as I thought it was more that you take it and should get the benefits straight away. I need to be more consistent and yes, since menopause is when I started having trouble sleeping and that was 20 years ago!!

mycatsanutter · 19/02/2023 11:36

Haven't got a clue if I'm going through the menopause, I have the coil fitted and do t have periods anyway ! I go through stages of hot flushes so maybe I am 🤷‍♀️
