Work breaks

MobilityCat · 17/02/2023 16:21

At my place of work we get a 10 minute tea break and a half hour lunch break. In addition, smokers get 10 minutes every hour for a smoke break. I started to join them during their sociable smoke breaks, but when my manager saw me doing it he pointed out that I wasn't a smoker, so I said that I was a passive smoker which is a recognised medical condition. Was that being unreasonable?

So smokers get over an hour in extra breaks every shift?

Whatatimetobealivetoday · 17/02/2023 16:22

Ten minutes in every hour?? That is rediculous and never heard of that before. Is the person who made that rule up a smoker?

AzureOrchid · 17/02/2023 16:23

Smokers should not be getting extra breaks !
If that was happening at my workplace I would put a complaint in.

Undermyumberellaellaella · 17/02/2023 16:24

That sounds ridiculous. We would get 5 minutes to go for a fag every hour if we wanted to but it would get taken out of our lunch. So the non smokers would get the full time. We would get "less" but spread out.

neverknowinglyunreasonable · 17/02/2023 16:26

Your manager is not going to give you extra breaks, they will take away the smokers breaks. And then you will be the person who lost the smokers their breaks.

Is this a written policy or more of a generally accepted practice?

Supernova23 · 17/02/2023 16:37

If they have to go out every hour for a fag, they've got a serious problem.

I worked somewhere like this and it was one of many the reasons I left. On top of multiple fag breaks throughout the day, they took their full lunch too, naturally. Both managers were smokers are joined in.

chipsandpeas · 17/02/2023 16:47

complain about it but make sure it doesnt backfire
i am/was a smoker, in my workplace we took unofficial smoke breaks and someone had a moan and it was pointed out some people took longer going to get a cup of tea than it took me for going for a quick smoke, result was no smoke breaks for us and others no longer could go and get cups of tea unless they were on an offical break

Flamingogirl08 · 17/02/2023 16:48

I mean you're being unreasonable because this didn't happen 🤷

HmmThat's kind of your employer, as if

GoodChat · 17/02/2023 16:52

Funnily enough I've seen almost this exact issue on a Facebook group I'm on ago a few months ago.

I'd be fine being that person.

ShimmeringShirts · 17/02/2023 17:24

@BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz your username is very apt.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 17/02/2023 17:25

Hahaha true.

LilLilLi · 17/02/2023 17:28

It’s unfair when smokers take their full lunch break plus fag breaks.

Im an ex-smoker, now vaper, and I nip out once in the morning and once in the afternoon for a vape when I’m in the office but I never take a full lunch. There is one other smoker that takes fag breaks and full lunch breaks and it’s starting to piss the non smokers off so I expect it will be banned soon.

Crinkle77 · 17/02/2023 17:34

I'm a smoker and even I realise its unfair that smokers ate getting more breaks.

FiddleLeaf · 17/02/2023 17:37

The smoker rule is clearly daft but yeah, YABU if you want to keep your job.

Was going to post something similar.

OoooohMatron · 17/02/2023 17:46

Yeah right. Pull the other one it's got bells on

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 17/02/2023 17:52

Obvious answer is to start smoking. Starting smoking can be difficult - ease your way in by using nicotine gum or vaping, then start with one cigarette a day and start 'cutting up' by smoking more cigarettes until you get to around 20 a day. Then - congratulations, you will be a smoker and you'll gain an hour or so in breaks every day. The downside is your exciting new hobby could cost you around £4000 a year and you might die of it.

Eh? Why would she lose her job?

Chlobo89 · 17/02/2023 17:56

Sounds made up to me 🤷🏼‍♀️ I’m a smoker and I have never taken or been given extra breaks in any job to go and smoke, see plenty of people going off to make tea/coffee though so maybe I should start drinking that 😂

PuppyMonkey · 17/02/2023 17:58

so I said that I was a passive smoker which is a recognised medical condition.

Grin

newjobnewstartihope · 17/02/2023 17:54

Eh? Why would she lose her job?

Because she’s being purposely argumentative so top of the list if they are cuts.

I agree it’s wrong but it is what it is.
