To ask why Alice in Wonderland isn't a Disney Princess ?

bluelollipop99 · 17/02/2023 09:33

Very stupid question, but was talking about this with a friend.

Cinderella, Elsa, Snow White, Belle, Sleeping Beauty, Pochohontus, Belle , Mulan are all over the Disney princesses/ merchandise promotions ? Why is Alice from Alice in Wonderland ignored? xxx

So why is Mulan a Disney Princess but the Frozen princesses and Vanellope aren't? It's all so confusing...

Maybe because Vanellope is a computer animation 🤔

But Jasmine wasn't the main person in Aladdin.

Irrelevant. Jasmine is the daughter of the Sultan of Agrabah, so fits into category number 2 - royalty.

Maybe a part of it is that Alice isn't a Disney Property? Lewis Carol wasn't it? Back in the 1800s..

I think the other princesses are Disney inventions, albeit influenced by real people.

Book Alice in wonderland is long out of copyright.

Film alice in wonderland is still in copy right today.

I suspect the actual reason ,(as people have said) is she has a lucrative following in her own right. As much from the book and goth crowd as the pure Disney crowd. The princess brand doesn't gain anything from her inclusion (especially as she has no princess ball gown) and the Alice brand doesn't benefit from her inclusion either.

Same with Tinkerbelle

ParadiseLaundry · 17/02/2023 21:45

But if they only need to fulfil one of the list of the criteria and not all then most female leads would be Princesses ie, most are human including Esmeralda and Megara who are not Princesses.

ParadiseLaundry · 17/02/2023 21:46

Sorry that was to @MelaniesFlowers

TitoMojito · 17/02/2023 21:49

Tbf there are lots of female Disney movie characters that could and, in some cases, should be Disney Princesses.

Kida from Atlantis The Lost Empire is a princess.
Eilonwy from The Black Cauldron is a Princess.
Kiara from The Lion King II is a Princess, but she isn't included because she’s an animal.
Megara from Hercules isn't a princess but she's a badass, and she’s not included.
Lilo from Lilo and Stitch is always saving the day but she isn't included.

So really Disney just decide.

Ultimately it's up to Disney themselves.

Whydoitry · 17/02/2023 21:55

Why? Because it doesn't suit Disney's marketing strategy. They make up the rules for who is in the Princess franchise based on how they can make the most money.

Vanellope isn’t the main character

Because she became Queen herself as her parents died.

Mind blown 🤯! So is Anna a Disney princess? 👑

No. She's in a different franchise.

So shocked by this.

Disney didnt invent any of those characters apart from maybe Elsa and Anna- and even those are inspired by the story of the Snow Queen

Ariel was real??!

ParadiseLaundry · 17/02/2023 22:01

@BertHandsome but neither is Jasmine.

Rowthe · 17/02/2023 22:09

Also.

Vanellope is a Disney Princess as is Raya.

They are just the newer ones so not on as much merchandise.

Also it's just the characters that make them the most money- not sure what they will do with Mirabelle- if they make her a Disney Princess because she is really popular.

Trainstrike · 17/02/2023 22:11

Raya is a princess also, she was the last one to be inducted (yes there's a whole ceremony). Elena was also inducted but, like Elsa and Anna, she leads her own franchise.

The reason Eilonwy, Kida etc aren't is down to failures of the films I believe?

petermaddog · 17/02/2023 22:23

``Pocahontas` native people go not do royalty

disney stole alot of women alice snow white etc existed long before disney

Icedlatteplease · 17/02/2023 22:26

I don't think you can say he stole them.... many of them are based on fairy tales that have been retold generation after generation going all the way back to oral storytelling.

ReneBumsWombats · 17/02/2023 22:27

Yes, a Disney Princess needs to be profitable and marketable.

Mulan was included for diversity reasons and I think they got her to marry the prince later to keep it legit. They still whitewashed her at one point, complete with blue eyes, but luckily that didn't last. Pocahontas is her culture's equivalent of a princess, but I've only ever seen her on official lineups of them all. Never seen her on a shirt or lunchbox with Aurora, Belle, Snow White, Ariel etc. I do occasionally see Jasmine there, and, very very rarely, Mulan. I probably see Tiana a bit less than Jasmine.

One of the things I loved about Belle was that her hair was rather normal, but in the glow-up princessified stuff, she's definitely had extensions. I feel disappointed, but if I can have Botox, I guess she can have those.

ReneBumsWombats · 17/02/2023 22:32

Headabovetheparakeet · 17/02/2023 22:01

Ariel was real??!

The Little Mermaid was originally by Hans Christian Anderson and it's a much sadder story.

Side note: Frozen had a reference to him. Hans Kristoff Anna Sven.

As pp said, she's in a different franchise but is also a queen after Frozen 2.
Anna became Queen of Arendelle as Elsa went to live with the Northuldra.

You could be forgiven for not knowing that, though, because Frozen II was so boring it was almost impossible to stay awake until the end.

Much better than Frozen 1 imo

I agree, and it is a stunningly beautiful animation.
