To ask why Alice in Wonderland isn't a Disney Princess ?

bluelollipop99 · 17/02/2023 09:33

Very stupid question, but was talking about this with a friend.

Cinderella, Elsa, Snow White, Belle, Sleeping Beauty, Pochohontus, Belle , Mulan are all over the Disney princesses/ merchandise promotions ? Why is Alice from Alice in Wonderland ignored? xxx

@Svalberg I think Tinkerbell actually got promoted rather than demoted. Like Elsa and Anna she's now part of a separate franchise: she heads up the fairies.

Another thing I've learnt!

TrickorTreacle · 17/02/2023 18:57

"Disney Princess" is a franchise.

According to Wiki, it covers Snow White, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Little Mermaid, Belle/Beauty, Jasmine/Aladdin, Pocahontas, Mulan, Tiana, Rapunzel/Tangled, Merida/Brave and Moana.

Frozen (Elsa and Anna) is a separate franchise for some reason.

I guess Alice isn't included because she's a kid.

Alice isn’t included because she doesn’t fit the strict Disney Princess criteria. Nothing to do with her age.

Pocahontas and Mulan aren't disney princesses

Alice isn't a princess because she wasn't a princess nor did she marry a Prince.

Wrong, they both are

disneyprincess.fandom.com/wiki/List_of_Disney_Princesses#Esmeralda

I always assumed it was all female characters, irrespective of their 'titles', you learn something new every day.

Headabovetheparakeet · 17/02/2023 20:21

Because she's a drug user.

AllOfThemWitches · 17/02/2023 20:22

Pocahontas and Mulan aren't disney princesses

Yes they are

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 17/02/2023 20:23

Alice is never a princess - she is 'promoted' straight to Queen in 'Through the Looking Glass'.

RealBecca · 17/02/2023 20:36

I love Alice. She stands alone and has an adventure for adventures sake.

I love that you could delete the entire film bar the first 2 minutes and last 2 minutes and it makes no didfference!

It was all a dream and its marvellous for it!

Quartz2208 · 17/02/2023 20:42

Alice is huge merchandising all on her own - I have an Alice handbag and Alice T shirt bought in the parks. Clothing stores often have an area dedicated to Alice stuff in the parks. Magic Kingdom has a ride and a cafe for her.

But it isn’t just Alice, character meets are also for the Mad Hatter Queen of Hearts and Tweedledee and Tweedledum as is the merchandising (my top has all the characters) and Cheshire Cat is also big for stuff.

you add her to the Disney Princess franchise and you lose the ability to market her on her own with the other characters.

Lots of creepy men by themselves queuing up to meet Alice at Epcot this week. 🤢

Official canon of Disney Princesses
The official canon of Disney Princesses consists of the female protagonists, most of whom have royal ties within their fictional universes, from twelve selected Disney films.

Snow White – Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937)

Aurora – Sleeping Beauty (1959)
Ariel – The Little Mermaid (1989)
Belle – Beauty and the Beast (1991)
Jasmine – Aladdin (1992)
Pocahontas – Pocahontas (1995)
Mulan – Mulan (1998)
Tiana – The Princess and the Frog (2009)
Rapunzel – Tangled (2010)
Merida – Brave (2012)
Moana – Moana (2016)

🎶 Welcome Queen Alice with ninety times nine 🎶

Belle isn’t of royal blood either. And neither is she invented by Disney (except giving her the French version of her name from the original story). So by rights she shouldn’t be a princess either.

ParadiseLaundry · 17/02/2023 21:10

(Spoilers for Wreck It Ralph)

I've always wondered why Vanellope from Wreck It Ralph isn't a Disney Princess when she definitely meets the criteria by being a princess and having it as her actual title!

ParadiseLaundry · 17/02/2023 21:14

gabsdot · 17/02/2023 10:17

There are strict rules about who is a disney princess

  1. They have to be human or mostly human (Arial)
  2. They have to be royal or marry into Royalty
  3. They have to be the main person in their movie
  4. They have to have perfomed a great herioc act (This is so Mulan can be included)

Interetingly Anna and Elsa are aren't part of the Disney princess collection because Frozen is it's own franchise, i.e. Disney sell enough Frozen merch so there is no need to include Anna and Elsa with the Princesses.

So Alice fails the test based on No. 2.

I learned all this from the Supercarlan brothers youtue channel. BTW

But Jasmine wasn't the main person in Aladdin.

Athousandwishes · 17/02/2023 21:17

I vaguely remember reading somewhere that to be an official Disney princess, they must sing and have an animal companion.

LimeCheesecake · 17/02/2023 21:19

Is it because she’s not royal, married to a royal and her story doesn’t involve romance at all?

BamBamBilla · 17/02/2023 21:21

Headabovetheparakeet · 17/02/2023 20:21

Because she's a drug user.

Alice wasn't on drugs, everyone she meets was on drugs.

ParadiseLaundry · 17/02/2023 21:23

Athousandwishes · 17/02/2023 21:17

I vaguely remember reading somewhere that to be an official Disney princess, they must sing and have an animal companion.

How do they define animal companion? Would Belle's be her horse? That's the only animal I can remember her interacting with. Feels wrong to count the enchanted humans as animals.

And would Merida's bear-mum count?

These are genuine questions btw, I'm not being a dick 😂

JaninaDuszejko · 17/02/2023 21:23

So why is Mulan a Disney Princess but the Frozen princesses and Vanellope aren't? It's all so confusing...

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 17/02/2023 21:25

What a strange question! She isn't a princess in the book, so why would she be a Disney princess?

To be fair, you've had some strange answers too, like the poster who thought that all of the characters had been invented by Disney!Grin

Headabovetheparakeet · 17/02/2023 21:27

@BamBamBilla

Tell that to Jefferson Airplane.

MelaniesFlowers · 17/02/2023 21:32

Incorrect.

Belle is a Disney Princess because she married Prince Adam (the Beast), so she fits into category number 2 - marries into royalty.

TimeToFlyNow · 17/02/2023 21:33

I don't know about her bear-mum , maybe her horse?

I think Alice sells a lot of merch anyway so need to be in the princess franchise. This thread has reminded me that I have 2 pairs of shoes based on Alice in wonderland
