To think there must be a solution to dog poo??

I don't know what exactly it would be but surely the answer isn't to just have pavements literally covered in shit.
Nearly every time we leave the house one of my kids seems to step in it.
Yesterday my eldest was playing football in a fenced off grass area at the park where dogs aren't supposed to be allowed, picked the ball up and got his hands covered in poo because it had rolled into a poo...gross
I can't even easily clean it off because I don't have a garden or anywhere to do it and the thought of bringing dog poo inside grosses me out.
the pavement all along the way to school you can't even walk two metres without coming across a pile of dog shit. All those kids trampoline it into the school carpets- yuck

I live very close to a quiet beach where dogs are allowed off the lead. When my children were little we always had to do a poo scan before sitting on the beach and zig zag round it on the prom.
Over the summer things really improved, fabulous. The weather changed and less people about up there, now we are back to poo every few yards. Makes me so cross. There are fog waste bins and at one time poo bags were provided but they were strewn all over the ground so no longer there. Really spoils a lovely walk...

Fines, like there are where I am in the US.

And massive and relentless expressions of disapproval. I've seen people bawl at dog owners who let their dogs dump in the parkway grass and walk away. I know one woman who brings a plastic bag with her in her pocket when she's out getting some exercise, to hand to dog owners who 'forgot' theirs or 'used it earlier'.

mathanxiety · 16/02/2023 19:32

elderly people who cannot bend down...

...can use a scoop on a stick.

That is, if they care.

C4tastrophe · 16/02/2023 19:34

I live in Switzerland. There was compulsory puppy training (including responsible dog owning), every dog is chipped and registered, yearly dog license is £130, there are free dog bags and dog bins literally everywhere. There are 4 in the tiny park near me, and one on each corner of any half popular dog walking route. They are even placed in the woods and out in the countryside where ever dogs are likely to be (all the dog license money gets put into the dog bins and collecting).
Still there is plenty of dog shit about. OK it’s not France, but there’s way too much.
It’s people being lazy, just scammers basically. Here dogs are banned from nearly all parks in towns, and being on the lead is compulsory in all towns, so the dogs are shitting in view of the owners.
At least they license fee goes to the cost of the bins and bags, would be terrible otherwise.

mathanxiety · 16/02/2023 19:34

And you cannot have a dog off leash in my neck of the woods in the US. You can be fined and your dog impounded.

C4tastrophe · 16/02/2023 19:35

Scummers, not scammers.

Dog tax- similar to road tax! Everyone with a dog has to pay £500 per annum

VoluptuaGoodshag · 16/02/2023 19:42

My neighbour went off her rocker at this coz it kept happening right outside her gate and her kids were always treading in it then into the house. She printed off a poster and laminated it and tied it to her gate - it said words to this effect:

Big poo emoji
I am watching very carefully who lets their dog crap here every other day. If I catch who it is, with evidence on my phone camera not only will I inform the dog warden but the next poster here will be one of the photographic evidence so all our neighbours will know who you are you manky *€stard!

It seemed to work as there was no poo thereafter

That is batshit. My car tax was £30 per year.
If our dogs only shit in our own gardens, are we exempt?

AdoraBell · 16/02/2023 19:49

Definitely license and fines. I can remember when the licenses were stopped but my late father was disgusted and said it would more problems.

We always pick up our dog’s poo. Can’t imagine why owners don’t.

Skiphopbump · 16/02/2023 19:59

I see dog poo on the field occasionally but very rarely on the streets. Most dog owners here pick up.

BorgQueen · 16/02/2023 20:02

I walk my Grandson to nursery every morning, it’s attached to a Primary and is surrounded by roads on all four sides, the footpaths are covered in shit, even by the school gates where there are cameras. I take DGS the ‘back way’ which has a field running parallel to the school, there are bins and signs but no, the selfish early morning dog wankers let their dogs crap all over the path, they don’t even bother to drag them into the gutter.

sqirrelfriends · 16/02/2023 20:02

Yup, absolutely. It just takes one.

Problem we have here is that the dog population went up massively over lockdown so there’s more of the minority.

That, and people were loath to pick up dog poo, blaming it on Covid too. Don't want to get Covid from the grass when you pick shit up. FFS.

The councils need to start fining people. My council is appalling at fining anyone for anything. There is sugnifivant flytipping with evidence and that's not fined. There is dog mess with evidence and that's not fined. The fine is up to £1000 each time so one of those should put people off

How do you prove who left the dog mess though? Film people? TBH, I would be mighty pissed if I saw someone film me every time I was out with my dog. There would end up being bigger issues than some dog poo.

WiIson · 16/02/2023 20:15

Ban all dogs. Then there won't be any dog poo.

Problems solved.

Now what to do with cats, foxes, birds, etc...

DdraigGoch · 16/02/2023 20:17

There should be a dog DNA database so that it's easier to fine offenders, rather than waiting for the dog warden (if there even is one) to happen to catch someone failing to pick up. Yes, I know that not all dogs are chipped in accordance with the law, but let's not let perfect be the enemy of good here.

That isn't going to happen, plus it is a huge over reaction to a problem that is solved simply by people being more responsible.
There is a guy who lives in my street, who takes a dump in our local park. No idea why. Maybe a queue for the toilet in his house.

Newbuildhulahoops · 16/02/2023 20:34

A few years ago there was a protest near a locally about allowing dogs onto the beach all year round. They had gathered on the pavement beside the beach. The irony? There was dog shit EVERYWHERE and the owners hadn't noticed because they were busy holding placards and shouting at passers-by (with a dog poo bin behind them!)

The dog ban remained in place.

BMW6 · 16/02/2023 17:28

Strange how much it varies from place to place. Lots of dogs in my area but very rarely see dog poo.

Agree. Rare near us. But I know parks a mile away which are awful for it

Snooozername · 16/02/2023 21:54

Same here. It's everywhere. Sick of it. Something needs to be done.

I want high-price dog licences. £1000+ a year per dog.
This will pay for dog wardens to patrol and fine those who don't pick up their dog's shit. Hefty fines - £500 per time or dog confiscated. CCTV cameras to help. It will pay for Street cleaning, nightly.
Ideally I'd see dogs banned though.
