To think there must be a solution to dog poo??

I don't know what exactly it would be but surely the answer isn't to just have pavements literally covered in shit.
Nearly every time we leave the house one of my kids seems to step in it.
Yesterday my eldest was playing football in a fenced off grass area at the park where dogs aren't supposed to be allowed, picked the ball up and got his hands covered in poo because it had rolled into a poo...gross
I can't even easily clean it off because I don't have a garden or anywhere to do it and the thought of bringing dog poo inside grosses me out.
the pavement all along the way to school you can't even walk two metres without coming across a pile of dog shit. All those kids trampoline it into the school carpets- yuck

This would do it, if owners could be bothered.

The only solution is for owners to pick it up

There's a green lane really close to me, off a car park and leads to several footpaths, lovely walks whatever the time of year, in different directions, through farm land that's well maintained, and is used by horses as well as dog walkers.
But, there's a proportion of people who take their dogs to the car park and up the first bit of the green lane for 10 minutes to allow them to do what they need to, and then leave it. It's a crop field FFS.
The car park is full of it too, and some of the footpaths that are closer to the villages or town it's dodge the pile, the pavements are no better.
I pick up after my two, there's no excuse not to, the excuse of lack of bins is excuse the pun, rubbish! Take it home with you! If you are determined you don't want to carry it with you for the rest of your walk then don't have a bloody dog because it's part of it.
We have a small playing field in the village with a play area for kids that's fenced off. That bit has a normal bin and there's a poo bin on the entrance, it gets full and then one of the regular walkers puts a bag there and rings the council, and a 'thing' has started where people leave a couple of empty poo bags tied to the railings, there's normally about 10 or so bags at any one time - but the real deterrent is one of the houses backing on to it put to a camera and a sign, and posted a few times on the village page saying the person up there at X time needs to come back and clear up after their dog or they'll post footage - it's very rare now to see it up there, I assume that the people who didn't pick up now use the green lane instead 😡

Or this one:

Nevermind31 · 16/02/2023 17:52

Too many dogs around. Too many owners who think their dog has rights over other humans, especially children.
too many lazy owners.
i agree on a dog licencing scheme, and I do think people should do a course before they can get a dog

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 16/02/2023 17:52

Hand on heart but I've never lived somewhere where this is a problem. Always lived in the north and more recently in the Northumberland countryside and hardly ever see dog poo other than the odd nugget or a bit hidden under a bush. Certainly not enough for it to be a problem or concern

whoruntheworldgirls · 16/02/2023 17:54

Our village has poo bins and bags all over the place and people still leave it on the path Sad disgusting

WorryMcGee · 16/02/2023 17:56

I don’t know what the answer is but it drives me insane. I have two labs who have been trained not to shit on the pavement, it’s not difficult - guide dogs etc don’t. They go in my garden or on walks in the woods, always off the path, in bushes if there are any. Any danger of being stepped in by humans and it’s picked up. If we walk in a park or across farmers fields, it’s picked up every time. Even when I’m carrying my baby in a sling and it’s more difficult to bend down.

I always have a poo bag in my pocket so have been known to chase people who haven’t picked up (often with said baby in sling) waving a bag saying “missing one of these?”

wetotter · 16/02/2023 17:57

Also breeders would be required to register puppies (cost passed on when sold), possible this could help with welfare - maybe help in identifying the horrors that are puppy farms?

They already are.

Unless exception welfare reason (such as maternal death) puppies may not be sold before 8 weeks and they must be chipped by that age. First registered owner on the chip has to be the breeder. Purchaser gets a code which allows them to update the chip to their details.

I've noticed a recent increase in the amount of poo just left round here. Vile and inexcusable. I've picked up several unrelated poos whilst clearing up after my dog in recent weeks.

Guide dogs are exempt from the requirement to pick up, but in practice aren't the cause of the problem as a) there aren't very many of them and b) they're trained the "spend" on command in places where the owner can cope with clearing.

Strawberrypicnic · 16/02/2023 17:58

I think part of the problem is there are a lot of dog owners who would not think of themselves as part of this group but they walk dogs off lead and don't pay proper attention to them. I see a lot of people jogging, chatting with friends or using their phones and the dog is milling around behind them or off the side of the path, I don't see how their poo is getting picked up every time.

NeverTrustAPoliceman · 16/02/2023 17:58

DNA testing, all dogs registered and chipped for a hefty fee. Massive fines to any owners failing to be decent citizens. Dogs removed for second offence. The "free" ownership of nuisance animals is a disgrace.

One of my neighbours watched a dog poo on the pavement outside his house. He bagged it up, found out where the owner lived and popped it through the letterbox. Never had any more trouble after that.

gogohmm · 16/02/2023 17:59

The solution is you pick up after your dog. Unfortunately it's hard to legislate for the feckless and irresponsible

DerangedViper · 16/02/2023 17:59

Gertrudetheadelie · 16/02/2023 16:31

I've said this before when this has come up but round us I've watched people running with their dogs (head phones in) and be so far ahead or behind the dog that they don't see it poo and so don't pick it up. I'm sure it is lovely running with the dog but the total obliviousness does my nut.

Yup, seen that. But the far commoner scenario is for someone to be occupied with small DC (lots of both dogs and children round here)

And it always seems to be other parents who bring their dogs in to "no dog" playgrounds or fenced off parts of parks.

Prometheus · 16/02/2023 18:05

Dogs should wear nappies when they go outside. After a year of taking off shitty nappies and hosing down dogs, I’m sure owners would jump at the chance go back and would actually clean up if the threat of nappies was held over them.

gogohmm · 16/02/2023 18:05

@Sistanotcista

Responsible people do, just like responsible people have insurance including 3rd party for their dogs and they are chipped but the irresponsible don't pick up, don't insure and don't chip - they also wouldn't pay for any licence scheme. These people are also the ones who don't adequately exercise their dogs, own breeds with questionable traits etc

XenoBitch · 16/02/2023 18:07

It pisses me off too, and I have a dog. I picked up her poo earlier today (in a lane, so a paved area), and there were 2 other dog turds near by. One was fluffy so had been there a while.
It seems to be a common complaint about dog poo on pavements. I do not understand why people do not pick up, when their dog would be on a lead then, so they would have to stop to let them do their business anyway.

I am not sure what the answer is. Licensing and DNA testing seems a bit too far fetched. Some people do get fed up and leave a plastic bottle full of poo bags near shit hot spots. If anyone does get fined, make it big news in the local press. Send out the message that it wont be tolerated.

Edthehorse · 16/02/2023 16:15

Corks?

🤣

Seriously the whole planet needs a bloody clean up campaign. Yes dog shit is disgusting. So is litter, chewing gum, food, vomit, piss and human shit!

XenoBitch · 16/02/2023 18:08

Prometheus · 16/02/2023 18:05

The last thing we need is more plastic nappies going to landfill. Human nappies are bad enough.

gogohmm · 16/02/2023 18:08

And don't forget fox poo looks similar, we have foxes that pass outside our front path daily (beautiful creatures I should add) and they poo on the pavement, seen them recently and I went and cleaned up. By morning you would not have realised it was from a fox

thepatronsaintofbubblewrap · 16/02/2023 18:13

A little girl where I used to live lost an eye due to rubbing it because her hand was covered in dog poo.
I remember the newspaper article saying she was playing in a fenced off area designed to be dog free.
Horrible.

JMSA · 16/02/2023 18:14

Its fucking awful OP - you have my sympathy. I have a dog and cannot imagine for one minute just leaving his poo in a public place.

WiddlinDiddlin · 16/02/2023 18:26

All the licencing and fines and so on ... requires enforcement.

We (as a nation) can't afford to enforce legislation and licencing schemes we already have.

The costs of setting up an efficient licencing scheme would be akin to building a new DVLA (look how efficient that is... and how well it stops people driving without a licence... ha) and you can't charge people for a licence until that system is built and works.

Wheres that coming from?

No, funnily enough, dog owners who do pick up after their dogs don't like standing in it, getting it on their hands or on their wheelchair wheels, pram wheels etc either. I also really hate having to scrape it out of my dogs paw pads (he's not a huge fan either!).

I'd like to reserve a special place in hell for:

Dog poo leavers
People who spit on the pavements
People who smash glass on pavements/in grass
People who leave general rubbish/particularly metal
People who leave used nappies

All of these things are disgusting and damaging to others.

On one of our local groups there was a big hooha about dog poo left in a kids grassed play area - someone set up cameras in the end.

Wasn't a dog. Wasn't even a fox in fact. Was a badger.

It is worth keeping in mind that theres a lot of shit out there, badgers, foxes, cats, otters (yep, lots of those where I live and yes, crossing tarmac area and shitting to scent mark) - if you walk on or play in grass or in forest areas you're likely to come across shit of one species or another. Some places, Forestry Commission, some woodland also encourages a 'stick and flick' approach to dog poo (i still bag and take home, I can't reach down for a stick and my dog poo grabber isn't good for 'flicking'), so if thats the case, stick to paths don't send kids off path to play.

hookiewookie29 · 16/02/2023 18:55

Its always worse in the winter because dog owners walk their dogs under the cover of darkness and don't clean up after them. I am a dog owner and clean up every single time. It's rife in our area, people have cctv of the owners actually allowing their dog to do it.....but in 26 years of living here, I've never known anyone to be fined for not cleaning up after their dog.
If people can't be bothered to clean up after them then they shouldn't have them.

wetotter · 16/02/2023 19:00

Yes I think darker evenings might be a reason (not an excuse, mind you, just a reason)

I have only ever twice left a poo, and both times it was for the same reason - I couldn't find it. I thought I had the exact spot fixed with my beady eye, but DDog was on autumn leaves, and the camouflage was just too good. I hunted for a good long while too!

And felt bad about it, and did the 'Karma Poo' penance to restore balance in the doggy universe (I'd left one, so picked up next two I came across)

This has happened to me too. DDog turns one out on autumn leaves, and I can't find it. Always in front of people too!
