To think there must be a solution to dog poo??

I don't know what exactly it would be but surely the answer isn't to just have pavements literally covered in shit.
Nearly every time we leave the house one of my kids seems to step in it.
Yesterday my eldest was playing football in a fenced off grass area at the park where dogs aren't supposed to be allowed, picked the ball up and got his hands covered in poo because it had rolled into a poo...gross
I can't even easily clean it off because I don't have a garden or anywhere to do it and the thought of bringing dog poo inside grosses me out.
the pavement all along the way to school you can't even walk two metres without coming across a pile of dog shit. All those kids trampoline it into the school carpets- yuck

How are you going to police the dog licence ? That costs money.
‘And plenty of people will know a dodgy bloke to get a puppy from.

By charging enough to cover the cost of administration plus the cost to society of people keeping dogs. Like cleaning up random poo and compensating victims of dog attacks.

Fragrancefreebabywipes · 16/02/2023 16:35

Surely the solution is dog owners pick it up

I would support harsh penalties for dog owners who don’t take poo home / dispose of it appropriately

ThreeLittleDots · 16/02/2023 16:37

a few elderly people who physically cannot bend down and pick up the poo

Then they shouldn't own pets, or have someone else do the walks for them.

BethFromThisIsUs · 16/02/2023 16:37

Yup. Grassy areas here are pretty much unuseable because of this issue. Lazy fuckers.

TheLostGiraffe · 16/02/2023 16:39

And yeah enough funding so that when complaints/ concerns are raised there is funding for people to investigate it, and check licences, and remove any unlicenced animals.

Owning a dog isn't a human right or remotely necessary. The people who wish to keep them should bear the cost to everyone else of ensuring this is done safely and without any inconvenience to others. No other standard domestic oet causes this much inconvenience and danger to others so the costs if controlling it properly should be considered part of the cost of choosing to do so by those who decide to participate in that hobby.

JehovahsWildebeest · 16/02/2023 16:41

Yes! I was saying this earlier, it's disgusting round here, I'm sure it's got worse since covid. Does anyone actually ever get prosecuted for not cleaning it up?

Galadriel90 · 16/02/2023 16:42

You can report a dog poo problem on your local council website. I'm unsure what good it will do but it's worth a try!

It's so gross. The amount of poo where I live is revolting. And it means constantly looking out for shit whenever we go for a walk or on the school run.

Ylvamoon · 16/02/2023 16:42

Oh look! Another one! 🙄

MaverickGooseGoose · 16/02/2023 16:44

Yep, it's gross. We have to go up an alley to get to school that is locally known as dog shit alley. Then a kid, buggy or scooter inevitably goes through it and spreads it even further.

I have a dog, I ALWAYS pick up the poo. Literally every bag / coat / pair of jeans I own always has poo bags in it.

I don't know what the answer is though when there are fuckwits owning dogs. Licensing? DNA poop testing?

THere used to be signs where I live about an £80 fine for fouling but I haven't seen those for years.

I'd also like to do something about the fox that keeps shitting on my doormat.

ronswansonstache · 16/02/2023 16:45

The thing I don't understand is when they bag up poo but then leave the bag and poo behind. Not only do they leave poo behind but also littered a plastic bag!

I live in a rural area and the bridleways are covered in bagged up dog turds. Many of them are hung from trees. It truly baffles me.

GoingOnce · 16/02/2023 16:45

Can’t dogs be trained to use some sort of toilets like cats do? Litter trays or similar I mean. Yes, I know dog poo is bigger but the idea that they just squat and shit on the pavements is abhorrent to me.

MaverickGooseGoose · 16/02/2023 16:45

Oh, and just because your dog is off lead in the middle of the kids football area, dont pretend you can't see it shitting.

Forever42 · 16/02/2023 16:45

When I was a child, dog poo was everywhere (including the famous white poo). Then there was a big campaign, especially about the risk of blindness in children, and it became socially in unacceptable. The "poop-a-scoop" became an essential item. Barely saw dog poo in the streets for years. It's been creeping back the past few years though. I'm not sure that much is considered socially unacceptable these days so you probably have to go down the fines route which needs enforcement. It's disgusting and infuriating. I know there are plenty of decent owners who always pick up their dog's mess but there are also plenty who don't. They are probably the same owners that allow their dogs to jump up at people in public places.

I will tell you what happens here when you report it!

A man came round with an aerosol paint can and circled all the dog in red paint.

Then he left

A week later all the dog poo is still there but no circled in red

I know it's not funny really but we are quite amused....I suspect a stage 2 was meant to happen

Interestingly though after the poo was circled no new poo appeared

So in a way it worked????

Bluevelvetsofa · 16/02/2023 16:47

It’s much worse here than it was pre lockdown. So many people round here bought dogs in the first few months of lockdown and now it’s rife everywhere. There are plenty of places to walk dogs, but not enough dog bins and they aren’t emptied frequently. Everyone complains about it and they all say that they always pick up after their dogs, but people must are leaving it, otherwise it wouldn’t be all over the fields and paths.

Mojoj · 16/02/2023 16:50

Apparently in Italy they dna test dog poo and send fines to the owners

We need this along with dog licences.

Sistanotcista · 16/02/2023 16:54

I'm a dog owner to two rescue dogs. Every single one of us has doggie poo bags in the pockets of all our jackets / coats. We clean up after our dogs. It's not difficult. I genuinely don't understand why people don't do this.

@Christmaspyjamas - this has really made me laugh 😀

Vets to collect details for any animals they treat?

Spot checks of registrations by wardens or teams that are collecting dog poo to test?

Big fines or dog removed from anyone that doesn’t have them registered. You don’t need every unregistered dog to be caught, you need enough deterrent of being caught so that 98% of people don’t risk it and go to a breeder rather than that dodgy bloke with a puppy

The person near me who complains about not enough dog poo bins lets her 2 dogs crap everywhere and never picks it up. It’s purely deflection.

There is a bin, admittedly only 1 but it’s a rural area, it’s not reasonable to expect there to be lots of bins like there might be in town centre parks. Yet dog owners should be picking up - bin or no bin.

IMustDoMoreExercise · 16/02/2023 17:05

What I don't understand is that all the dog walkers must step in it too. Yet
they dont' seem to care.

foxlover47 · 16/02/2023 17:14

I can't understand why not pick it up ? How embarrassing to stand there and watch your dog take a turd then walk off and leave it , vile
I pick mine and get embarrassed if they do it anywhere near a road , a house , I see it in the woods , on the bridle paths I think more people leave it than pick it up

GlassBunion · 16/02/2023 17:27

It seems that many people just want to own a dog these days, just because.
Yes dogs are cute and loving but , judging by the number of threads both here and elsewhere, there seems to be a huge number of people who don't want to put the hours in re training and socialising and don't want the unpleasant sides to dog ownership eg poo, vet bills , attention and curtailment of lifestyle.

It pisses me off greatly that people WANT a dog as a kind of social symbol but then resent the needs of the dog ie playing with them, walking them, including them in family life , training them etc, etc...

There needs to be a change in the societal thinking about dog ownership.
Having the latest cockyshitpoo is a disturbing trend, particularly when they're then crated all day ' so that they feel safe!!!!' Bollox.

BMW6 · 16/02/2023 17:28

Strange how much it varies from place to place. Lots of dogs in my area but very rarely see dog poo.

BorisJohnsonsHair · 16/02/2023 17:28

Ban dogs.
