To not know if I can get pregnant at 49?

Holyguacamollie · 14/02/2023 13:57

I stopped using contraception a few months ago because quite frankly I'm sick of it and when I googled getting pregnant at 49.6 it said it was 0-1% chance.

It felt like v good odds.

However. I now 'feel' pregnant and I'm a bit panicked. Period due in a few days.

Surely I couldn't be could I?

Frer is a first response early result test. Pink dye. Tells you 6 days early (sometimes) and the most sensitive you can get.

jitteryquick · 14/02/2023 17:50

Oh dear OP! If you're still having periods then yes you could still get pregnant. Good luck tomorrow!

TaraMock · 14/02/2023 17:52

Holyguacamollie · 14/02/2023 17:44

I'm going to town tomorrow so will get a test. What's a frer? My last pregnancy test was over 25 years ago! Is there a good type to buy these days?

Thank you. Feel pretty stressed at the thought.

Best of luck OP, hope you get the result you want. 💐

Whatever it is you can't do anything about right now, so try not to stress yourself out

BatshitBanshee · 14/02/2023 17:57

If you're still mensturating then there's always a chance. No point stressing till you know though so try keep calm. There's always options for you if you need. X

gogohmm · 14/02/2023 18:01

My friend is currently pregnant at 49, no assistance. She didn't think she was fertile either

mnvices · 14/02/2023 18:01

OP, it's possible but vanishingly unlikely. I had a couple of 'scares' at a similar age and did tests, but all were negative. I was still having periods, but they were less regular than they had been. I hope you get the result you want.

Reigateforever · 14/02/2023 18:05

Maybe book for an appointment with you gynecologist even before the test, so they can help you set up things ready for the future… new contraception, HRT etc.

enoughofthiscrap · 14/02/2023 18:13

I just saw a 48 year old announce her pregnancy on tik tok

Sugarfree23 · 14/02/2023 18:22

Op statistically it's possible and if I remember rightly if you are pregnant the odds of it being twins is 1 in 10.
The older you are the less likely you are to get pregnant but much more likely to have a twin pregnancy, wonky hormones releasing two eggs at a time.😬

Indecisivebynature · 14/02/2023 18:24

I had a baby at 46. Conceived first month, healthy pregnancy and delivery.

The oldest woman my midwife was looking after was 51, a ‘shock rather surprise’ pregnancy and she had a 26 year old son that she was dr we ding telling. It does happen.

Axahooxa · 14/02/2023 18:35

My peri menopausal symptoms are identical to pregnancy at times. Plus if you’ve just come off the pill, you may feel different.

DragonflyLady · 14/02/2023 18:36

I had a friend who worked on the early pregnancy unit about ten years ago - she said they would see about one 50+ woman a month.

You give me hope. I am 32 and left a LTR. Would love to be a mum one day and worry I'm too late.
Probably doesn't give OP much hope though - sorry.

Beamur · 14/02/2023 14:00

Well, if you're still having periods then you're still ovulating.
I guess the odds of a pregnancy continuing aren't great though but it's possible.
Cherie Blair (wife of Tony) had her last at 45.

Actually two years later she got pregnant again but miscarried.
45 and 47 are still a lot younger in pregnancy terms than 49 though!

Fifi00 · 14/02/2023 18:43

Seems every MNer knows someone who had a successful pregnancy at 50 🤨. The statistics say it's really rare to have a live birth at that age.

IVFbeenverylucky · 14/02/2023 18:43

@Mariposista Definitely not, but if things don't work out consider using sperm donor. I had babies that way at 38 and 39, and am now (almost 41) 8 weeks pg with DC3. It's not for everyone, but you've got loads of time; maybe consider having your eggs frozen though - there's lots of stuff about that here, but don't think this is the right discussion for that!

I split with my 1st husband at 29. At 32 I had my 1st and my 2nd at 36. We had also tried for 6 years before splitting and not a sniff of a bfp. 1st month trying with now dh and I was pregnant.

Presumably these were overwhelmingly IVF donor eggs. Natural pregnancies at that age, particularly if you are not trying, can't possibly be so common!

JenniferBooth · 14/02/2023 18:47

Im 50 in June and have got to stay on the mini pill till im 57? All because the NHS 25 years ago would accept that im child free by choice and were all "oh you will change your mind" Fucking fab 🙄

JenniferBooth · 14/02/2023 18:47

*would NOT accept

DragonflyLady · 14/02/2023 18:48

No, she said these were mostly women who thought they were going through the menopause but found they were actually pregnant. (I’m 54, still ovulating, still having periods - but luckily not having sex!!)

bumpytrumpy · 14/02/2023 18:48

MyAnacondaMight · 14/02/2023 15:39

So many miracle babies from mumsnetters’ grandparents reported on this thread! 😏

I’ll be the first to acknowledge that my great grandmother’s miracle pregnancy in her 40s was in fact her 16 year old daughter’s.

Definitely the case for the majority of those age 45+ pregnancies

Rainbowredddy · 14/02/2023 18:51

Can nobody go round to OPS house and give her a test so I don't have to wait til tomorrow for the results 🙃

A month? That's extraordinary, because the statistics certainly don't bear that out.
Unless all of them ended up with miscarriages. Which is a shame. Even so, it seems like a very high rate.
