I remember it from years ago. Pretty sure it was a book, not a short story but could have misremembered that.

It was told from the point of view of a girl in hospital. She was narrating her memories and daily routine. They were keeping mirrors away from her. A big reveal about a third of the way through was that they put a mirror above her bed and revealed that she was a chimp- who had the girl's brain transplanted.

Can anyone remember this? Google is not helping

Eva by Peter Dickinson?

ChopSuey2 · 14/02/2023 12:16

I just did a Google search and also came up with Eva but I've not read it

I read this as a teen!

DrSalome · 14/02/2023 12:26

Eva! God that book is creepy!

crochetmonkey74 · 14/02/2023 14:52

It does sound the same- but reading the summary I certainly don't remember all the bit about her going to live with the chimps etc

But maybe my mind is playing tricks

I read this as a very young teen and it really freaked me out! I still think about it now! I don't think I got to the bit where she goes and lives with the chimps, I definitely stopped reading part way through.

NutYourPlace · 14/02/2023 15:51

Yes, she lives with the chimps at the end and has a "mate" 😳

dontgobaconmyheart · 14/02/2023 15:57

Sounds cheerful and not at all disturbing! 😅- I'm not surprised that's stuck in your mind OP.

Yes, it was Eva. She was the only survivor of the therapy, they believed because she grew up around chimps so it wasn't as horrific for her and easier to adjust. She "spoke" through a keyboard. She went to live with chimps at the very end.

The bit that bothered me most, other than the obvious experimenting on children, was when she had a baby chimp at the end. The human interviewing her asked who the father was and she didn't know, and was trying to explain chimp sexual politics. That just made it all the more weird to me.
