15 minute cities and the conspirators

15 minute cities being organised to mean that you don't have to rely on a car to get to everything and can easily walk to many places therefore only have to use the car for longer journeys

the conspiracy theories im seeing on social media are suggesting its a world wide control formula and we will be fined for moving from one district to another.

I'm wondering if the car manufactures are behind the conspiracy, as they would have a lot to lose if people live in places where they don't need a car and can just ave one family car or hire a car. Billions of sales could be lost if this takes off.

Some cities have gone car free - theculturetrip.com/europe/spain/articles/the-car-free-spanish-city/ and found after much objection, that it works well - especially for the elderly

@OutofEverything

Why are you focusing on that one place?

RedRiverShore3 · 17/02/2023 16:17

QuertyGirl · 17/02/2023 16:12

They're major, living cities

But if they have proper shops and chain stores they are not comparable to what is happening here. I was told upthread that there wouldn't be chain shops like Wilko only local shops in the 15 minute quarters

ivykaty44 · 17/02/2023 16:18

I and others are not going to ride bikes,. I will just drive to retail parks on the edge of the City instead.

thats your choice to drive to stuff out of town, many people do cycle and London has 27% of people cycling with a very high proportion of this cycling having a physical disability, but what is your point about everyone you know who has a bike has a car as well?

If this was such a terrible idea, why are all these major cities doing it? These are some of the economic powerhouses of civilisation.

They're can't all be lefty-capitalist hating hippies

Most of them have very good public transport systems. I have lived in London and Oslo and never needed a car. I live 7 miles outside Oxford on a road with patchy cycle paths (most of which are shared with pedestrians) and a substantial chunk are currently closed or a half hourly bus service which becomes an hourly bus service in the evening. So I currently join the queue of traffic crawling to the park and ride and then spend 20-40 minutes on a bus into town.

There is nothing wrong with discouraging car use but it should be both carrot and stick, not just stick.

QuertyGirl · 17/02/2023 16:19

@RedRiverShore3

How are they different?

There are no supermarkets in the pedestrianised area of Pontevedra.
It will be like Britain's pedestrianised streets. Cafes, bars, clothes shops and gift shops and maybe a small Tesco express.

Yes, that is what I thought, so fun, sightseeing holiday type shops not shops to get general everyday stuff so then you have to get online supermarket shop and everyday stuff from Amazon

Ginmonkeyagain · 17/02/2023 16:21

Loads of 15 minute cities have chains - indeed within a 10 minute walk of my flat I have Sainsbury's, KFC, Superdrug, Costa Coffee, more estate agents chains than I know what to do with, Boots, Wetherspoons.

I also have a number of small indepedent places like butchers, florists, gift shops, coffee shops, hairdressers, pubs and restaurants. You know - almost like an old fashioned mixed high street.

OutofEverything · 17/02/2023 16:25

27% of people in London have cycled at least once over the past 12 months.
It is thought that in Greater London 155,289 people regularly cycle to work. 8.9 million people live there.

Loads of people cycle with the kids on holiday in a rural area or Centreparcs or similar. They count in your stats.

So why did PP upthread say there was only local businesses, not places like Wilko, I get loads from there, I would just get it from Amazon instead not an independent version of Wilko so how is that supporting the high street

OutofEverything · 17/02/2023 16:27

@Ginmonkeyagain You live in London. You do not need a car. You have access to far more facilities close to where you live than most people outside London does as well as excellent and cheap public transport.
Applying this model outside of London is very different.

Ginmonkeyagain · 17/02/2023 16:27

I have no idea what you or indeed other people are going on about on that front - I am pretty sure there is not a conspiracy to prevent you from using Wilkos.

We cycle on holiday, we chuck the Bromptons in the back of our big gas guzzling diesel that tows our caravan and sometimes go out on a bike ride when we get to our caravan site.

Ginmonkeyagain · 17/02/2023 16:29

@OutofEverything indeed I do - good public transport and access to services is why London is a desirable place to live. However the country is not split in to London and places you can only get to by car, plenty of cities and towns have walkable high streets and public transport.

Wrong. An old fashioned high street had clothes shops, shoe shops, hardware stores, butchers, bakers, fishmonger, greengrocers, bank, post office, pharmacist. They were for people to buy what they need for daily life.

I use our local Wilko so no worries but I was definitely Wilko shamed upthread as it wasn't a local business so shops like that wouldn't be available anyway, so not just Wilko, that was an example it would be all non local business shops

OutofEverything · 17/02/2023 16:32

@Ginmonkeyagain Yes plenty of Britain has infrequent high cost buses into the city or town centre. Most suburban high streets, unless in a well off area or a traditional Asian area, have very limited high streets. Bookies, charity shop, small grocery store, chip shop, hairdressers, estate agents, kind of places. We have an Iceland as well as those mentioned.

Ginmonkeyagain · 17/02/2023 16:32

I have literally described all that you loon. I haven't listed every shop but we do have a PO. Sainsbury's fulfils the bakers, greengrocer fishmonger function - not trad but that's modern life - we do have a butcher who also sells fresh bread. Yes it isn't perfect, our high street is a rather ordinary 3rd tier high street. Functional but not very fancy. I can also walk to a hardware shop in 20 mins and to a more fancy one with a fishmonger etc.. etc.. in a but 30 mins (or 10 mins on a bus).

QuertyGirl · 17/02/2023 16:33

The knots people will twist themselves into to justify excessive car use Grin

ivykaty44 · 17/02/2023 16:34

They were for people to buy what they need for daily life.

and that is what the 15 minute cities are trying to achieve, places that people need within 15 minutes walk. Schools, doctors, chemist, small grocery stores, pub, library, playing fields, parks post office, hairdressers, dentist, opticians

@Ginmonkeyagain I am buggering off. Not staying here to be personally insulted.

Bye!!!

Ginmonkeyagain · 17/02/2023 16:37

@OutofEverything where do you usually go? Your out of town insult emporium? 😁

QuertyGirl · 17/02/2023 16:37

I'm genuinely amazed that people didn't realise that pedestrianisation is a global trend and not a UK, lefty plot Confused
