15 minute cities and the conspirators

15 minute cities being organised to mean that you don't have to rely on a car to get to everything and can easily walk to many places therefore only have to use the car for longer journeys

the conspiracy theories im seeing on social media are suggesting its a world wide control formula and we will be fined for moving from one district to another.

I'm wondering if the car manufactures are behind the conspiracy, as they would have a lot to lose if people live in places where they don't need a car and can just ave one family car or hire a car. Billions of sales could be lost if this takes off.

Some cities have gone car free - theculturetrip.com/europe/spain/articles/the-car-free-spanish-city/ and found after much objection, that it works well - especially for the elderly

Point proven; it's all about image and short term convenience.

I do see mainly young men without kids shopping at LIDL and ALDI and using backpacks to get shopping home. But they never have children with them.

How do you think that children in car free families don't starve to death?

RedRiverShore3 · 17/02/2023 12:07

People in car free families where I live get taxis home from the supermarket, I have seen them at the taxi rank with their shopping. Woman opposite doesn't drive and gets a taxi home from Asda, I have seen her getting shopping out of taxi boot. Obviously people won't do this in these places with zones.

QuertyGirl · 17/02/2023 12:09

@RedRiverShore3

In a 15 min neighbourhood you wouldn't need the taxi.

yeah but then your catering for people who don't have cars, don't pay road tax and don't have to pay for fuel in their car. Thos people that dint' have cars have either sorted their life so they don't need a car or they can't afford a car - its 33% of the population of driving age.

People spend more money on their car than they do on their weekly shopping, mortgage/rent and child care come in a higher household bills with car ownership just behind. £300/400 a month to pay for the car, £100 for car tax, £30/40 for insurance each month then MOT and servicing before fuel has been added at around £100 a month £600 for one car

Get a taxi home twice a week with shopping at £20 a time is cheaper by £98 a week than owning a car.

It will be very expensive having to buy from local businesses and artisan shops instead of a supermarket but most people in cities are fairly well off so probably don't mind. In the poor quarter it will probably be different but the well off people probably won't care what happens there anyway

Asda is only 15 minutes away but woman opposite has too much shopping to carry she would have to make lots of trips instead of one about every two weeks.

QuertyGirl · 17/02/2023 12:19

Hang on, you want poor people to be forced to spend money on taxis?

OutofEverything · 17/02/2023 12:19

@ivykaty44 Which is why many poor people, especially mothers with young kids get taxis from supermarkets already. But in my City only black taxis are exempt from traffic no through ways, not ordinary taxis.

QuertyGirl · 17/02/2023 12:21

Most of the areas with the highest levels of deprivation in the UK, are urban.

OutofEverything · 17/02/2023 12:23

I know - I live in one.

QuertyGirl · 17/02/2023 12:25

So why don't you want it to have decent facilities, clean air and kids playing out?

RedRiverShore3 · 17/02/2023 12:26

It's generally people without cars that get taxis, rich and poor, I had thought of getting rid of my car and getting taxis as I only do about 1000 miles a year but decided against it.

OutofEverything · 17/02/2023 12:27

This will not bring decent facilities. It will just make it harder to travel to decent facilities.
Nothing is done about others sources of clean air. Ban wood burning stoves.
It is trying to roll back to 50 years ago without understanding the world has changed. It will just kill my local high street.

QuertyGirl · 17/02/2023 12:28

In 15 min neighbourhood you'd rarely need taxis.

OutofEverything · 17/02/2023 12:29

@RedRiverShore3 Yes either people in London with great transport facilities, or people who do not go out their house much e.g. elderly people with a weekly trip to the supermarket and trips to the Dr.

RedRiverShore3 · 17/02/2023 12:29

The kids won't be able to play out or they will probably be mown down by a delivery van, cyclist or those damn scooters that are a scourge on the neighbourhood

ivykaty44 · 17/02/2023 12:29

It will be very expensive having to buy from local businesses and artisan shops instead of a supermarket

people spend an extra £16 a week using local supermarkets such as Tesco express or Sainsbury local etc - rather than a large supermarket

deprived urban areas aren't usually where artisan food shops are located

Yeah I know you think everyone can just walk to their local shop. So I can only get food from Iceland a small Co-op from now on. No Sainsburys, Tescos, ASDA, LIDL or Marks and Spencers for me.

OutofEverything · 17/02/2023 12:31

And I can only eat at Weatherspoons from now on or the local chippy.

So it's not worth even trying? Just give in and accept, dirty, dangerous streets?

We'll just drown in our own filth and let the planet burn?

Btw, in cities where this has actually happened, the economy actually gets a boost. That assertion is backed up by data.

Why? Public transport exists and if it doesn't, campaign for it

OutofEverything · 17/02/2023 12:34

@QuertyGirl No, invest in public transport.

And everytime in my City they stop traffic going down a certain street, the shops always start closing.

You are the one saying I should be able to walk everywhere within 15 minutes and not need to get taxis.
