Do cleaners not do dishes?

My new cleaners seem a bit rubbish. I clean the loo , move clothes, I had already hoovered a couple of days ago and gave everything a proper scrub/mop there wasn't much for them to do but DD and DH had left breakfast dishes in the sink. The dishes were untouched and the cleaners left 30 mins early. I pay for 2 hours a week , 2 cleaners so 1 hour. Is washing some dishes and cleaning the sink really unacceptable?

Clean your own house. Problem solved.

I used to do the odd dish if they left there breakfast things out they rarely did and were quite embarrassed by me doing that because it was a genuine mistake but they appreciated the thought I also would also change beds if the linens were left out and a general tidy up for example I had a couple who were not very mobile always dropped money on the floor which would roll under the bed I would pick it up and put it visible it served two purposes one it saved them a job two it saved my hoover from getting jammed up 😂

CoupDeGrace · 14/02/2023 18:33

It depends on what's agreed. Usually cleaners hoover, dust, clean bathrooms and mop floors. You would have been better to have done the dishes and not cleaned the toilet (defeats the purpose of having cleaners in the first place).

She is a house cleaner not a housekeeper.

i have worked in a few offices and also cleaned a few as well and I have never been asked to walk round desks to collect cups to wash. That is just so disrespectful and rude to expect someone to do that. Surely it’s up to the office worker to wash her/hers own bloody cup?

thedogsmababy · 14/02/2023 19:19

Mine does everything. She's great. I don't leave the place a tip but if there are dishes out she puts them in the dishwasher. I pay her above the going rate tho.

Hiring a housekeeper/cleaner if needed , I already posted an updated I will be letting my old ones go. When I went to look at my bathroom on Monday toothpaste was left all over the sink. Yep so not even cleaning properly

I was a cleaner. I liked the kitchen to look perfect when I left, so if there were dirty dishes, I would do them, but generally I preferred not to. I would clean everything even if it looked clean though, and I wouldn't leave early...that would be dishonest.

Grapewrath · 14/02/2023 19:47

Do you have a dishwasher op?
I ask because many people (me included) prefer dishes not to be hand washed as the dishwasher sterilises and dries them. It’s possible your cleaner thought this might be the case for you

Casperroonie · 14/02/2023 20:07

So get rid of them then??? The dishes I can understand as not part of what they do, but finish half hour early? I don't think so. Get a proper cleaning company not agency, someone who takes a bit of pride in their work. A good cleaner will stay with you for years and do a proper job always.

Redladybirdbaglady · 14/02/2023 20:16

I wouldn't want a cleaner wasting time on dishes day to day when there are much more important things to get done, but in this instance, I don't think it's unreasonable at all to expect that they do that (or find other things to do) rather than leaving early. I'd definitely be looking at other options tbh.

littlefirecar · 14/02/2023 21:23

When I had a cleaner she always did if there were any, wouldn't have been annoyed if she didn't as she was a great cleaner but I get why you'd be annoyed if they were getting half an hour paid free time and there was only a little bit to do

thegreylady · 14/02/2023 22:05

Mine does dishes if there are any. She will always empty the dishwasher or washing Maxine if appropriate. I don’t ask her to do these things. She cleans for a set time and just gets on to do what is needed.

Babymamaroon · 14/02/2023 22:10

I think it's absurd to not wash the dishes yet clean toilets!

I'd get a new cleaner OP

TheChosenTwo · 14/02/2023 22:14

Our cleaner does any odds and sods left in the sink although it’s very rare that anything is in there. She loads the dishwasher with anything around the house though (namely glasses in the teens rooms which haven’t been brought down despite me asking several times before she comes).
However I do my best to make sure everything is tidy and ready to be cleaned. I do whizz the hoover round the kitchen before I leave for work as ds leaves breakfast crumbs every day and I make sure the loos don’t have visible marks in them, bins are emptied too.

Choccyoclocky · 14/02/2023 22:15

Could be worse.. my cleaner did wash up the bowl and 2 plates I left from breakfast as we left in a rush for school.. but she didn't clean the sink or draining board. I had to do it when I got home!

Who does dishes in an office if not the cleaner? It's even more important at work where everyone leaves their dirty dishes around the kitchen

Are you kidding? You do your own dishes! You dont leave used mugs and stuff lying around!

TheChosenTwo · 14/02/2023 22:41

@ladykale we wash up our own stuff in the office but there’s only about 3 or 4 of us that go in now. I started off loading the dishwasher but the cleaner who comes in mid afternoon to deal with the kitchen ended up taking out the few bits and hand washing them since I suppose it didn’t make sense to run a dishwasher load for a few glasses and mugs.

Justalittlebitduckling · 14/02/2023 22:44

Ours doesn’t, no. Just moves them into the sink.

ladykale · 14/02/2023 22:52

@RealBecca I don't know if it's because I work in a v male dominated industry, but absolutely no one does their dishes!

At most, someone might put them in the dishwasher but mostly they're scraped and left in the sink at all three places I've worked.

Two of them were larger organisations so there were cleaners in the building throughout the day who loaded the dishwasher after lunch.

Anyway your approach makes a lot more sense!

Jimmyneutronsforehead · 14/02/2023 22:53

Our cleaners charged extra for dishes.

Sparkleshine21 · 14/02/2023 22:55

@Fifi00 I live in the North west and I do dishes included in my cleaning! Send me a message 😅

Why cant your child put away their own crisps they've left on the side?! How lazy!

The clue is in the name, cleaners are there to clean, not tidy away the shit you and your children cant be bothered to put away

I can see the cleaner / domestic kitchen split if a business...

But in a private home?

Whenever I've been around non business cleaners, they do anything that needs doing!
