The headline today on the BBC regarding the object shot down by US military is very interesting.
The US Military Commander has stated that they "have not ruled out that the objects were extra-terrestrial"

The description reminds me of something I saw a few years ago. One Saturday evening, mid-summer we were sitting with some guests in the garden. We are elevated so it is possible to see the surrounding topography. Visibility was good, it had been a very warm day, with just the odd fluffy cumulus cloud dotted around, only a very slight breeze. Into view moving from east to west was a dark grey/brown craft of an irregular shape, sort of octagonal but of unequal side length. It had some form of propulsion because the very slight breeze that existed was clearly moving clouds from west to east. This craft was going in the opposite direction, very slowly but very purposefully. Size is difficult to gauge when looking at something in the sky, without another object to place it against and know the distance. Looking at the clouds and knowing roughly what height they were this craft would have been at about 1,000 feet above ground level, about the size of 2-3 tennis courts and probably about half a kilometre to the north. The sun shone very clearly on it and although we are elevated it was clearly above us, so we were unable to make out much in the way of detail as the side and underneath was in shadow. It had a hard sculptured look to it. It was just bizarre because we stood by the hedge looking at the thing and just trying to work out what type of plane it was, which is ridiculous because it was clearly nothing like any plane and was completely silent. There were no engines, no propellors, nothing that looked remotely like a balloon. We do not mention it for the simple reason people would think we were crackers if we did.

I think that’s code for ‘China has jumped ahead technologically and we haven’t a fucking clue how these things are even in the air’.

I think this is probably true.
But if it was aliens I guess they would not tell us.

pizzaHeart · 13/02/2023 10:26

I think it's code for "we need a justification to shoot these down that doesn't allow china to retaliate"
agree with this^

They are not sure what to do so not sure how much to tell us hence such a wooly answer. I’m sure they didn’t exclude these objects being Elon Musk’s doings as well at least because they haven’t got enough time.

HoppingPavlova · 13/02/2023 10:33

I think it's code for "we need a justification to shoot these down that doesn't allow china to retaliate"

Absolutely this. Nothing to do with aliens.

whatanoddthingtoask · 13/02/2023 10:36

If it was aliens they’d have sent a message first surely so either we assume they did and it was threatening so they get shot down on sight or they didn’t because it’s not aliens

APMom6 · 13/02/2023 10:43

When me and my son watched the news last I laughed and said ‘I bet you it’s aliens’ so I got a great kick out of messaging my kids this morning when I read BBC news app telling them I called it.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 13/02/2023 09:29

If they were extra terrestrial it would be a bit of a co incidence they were all over or near USA.

Aliens always attack the US - have you not been paying attention?

ExistenceOptional · 13/02/2023 10:49

If they only attack the US we should be okay.

Wakemeuuuup · 13/02/2023 10:51

I doubt it's aliens but if it is we're in trouble as we're not exactly being friendly

TokyoSushi · 13/02/2023 10:53

Because it's not ET, it's China.

KnittedCardi · 13/02/2023 11:01

Because they were tracked from China. So on the balance of sane probability, they probably came from there.......

silverclock222 · 13/02/2023 11:03

I'm still recovering from the last 3 years and quite frankly I am beyond caring.

Bard6817 · 13/02/2023 11:10

Wtf. Chinese aliens?

Although personally if you actually want to discuss aliens, start with the Fermi paradox or Drakes equation.

They are two different subjects.

True! Shooting down aircraft sent to check us out will lead to an inter terrestrial war.

MissVantaBlack · 13/02/2023 11:12

I'm a bit on edge about this too, OP. What with covid, the war in Ukraine, the climate catastrophe and now this, my nerves are starting to jangle. I never thought I'd see a BBC news article that seriously refered to unidentified flying objects, extraterrestrials and aliens. I feel as if I'm living in an episode of Black Mirror.

ExistenceOptional · 13/02/2023 11:13

@silverclock222 I am a bit beyond caring as well.

LordEmsworth · 13/02/2023 11:14

Why do you think there aren't many people who speculate about the possibility of extra terrestrial life? It's a pretty common topic and there are people with actual, paid, reputable jobs for reputable organisations searching for extraterrestrial life.

Cornettoninja · 13/02/2023 11:16

To wonder why more people aren't speculating more on the possibility of extraterrestrial beings?

This is the third/fourth thread I’ve seen on active this morning and a few news headlines… how many conversations do you want?

gazpachosoupday · 13/02/2023 11:19

I am sad the next apocalyptic nightmare appears to be aliens rather than zombies, I am much more prepared for zombies.

DP did try and cheer me up by saying maybe the aliens will turn people into zombies, but its not the same

Teaandtoast3 · 13/02/2023 11:20

Surely if it was China then no one could fault the US for shooting it down? They were in the US airspace and had no reason to be

Iwantabloodypizza · 13/02/2023 11:22

I am beyond caring too.

Also yes, Zombies is my preference. I’d love to try and outwit them and if I got bitten, I’d be a zombie myself so it’s win win for me.

I don’t believe a thing the media or government say anyway.

Aren’t the full list of Epstein flight names being released today? Smacks of Let’s get tie plebs distracted by talking about aliens.

Idkrealorfake · 13/02/2023 11:23

This brilliantly written article posted by another MNetter on a thread about these objects explains why it's unlikely to be aliens - and why you wouldn't want it to be!

crossstitchingnana · 13/02/2023 11:26

Why would an alien life form travel thousands of light years, with technology beyond our wildest imaginations, and then only look at North America? Just highlights how America-centric the Americans are.

Teaandtoast3 · 13/02/2023 11:27

@crossstitchingnana except there was apparently one in Russia in January… and apparently there’s one in China now.

I had not realised those names were being released today.
