I'm a home carer, I have a set area in my town where I do teas and beds. I get paid per visit each time I log in and out. Time In between is not paid for. I've had 2 tea cancellations today and my boss is wanting me to stand out side in the middle of no where for 1.30 mins till my next tea visit starts, I'm I wrong for telling her that I don't think that's fair ? It's not my fault I've arrived at 2 peoples house for them to cancel on me. I'm regretting coming into this job, I love my clients but the management not so much

You should be paid for travel between appointments. Why are they cancelling? I bet the agency gets paid even if you aren't.

TheLastDreamOfTheOak · 12/02/2023 17:53

Well the clients will still be paying if they are last minute cancellations (or the Local Authority will if that's how its funded) so you should still be being paid and I also paid carers travel time (when I was a Dom Care Manager). Look around for a better employer-there is no shortage of jobs, or you may be better off working in a care home or supported living-all clients in one place.

LIZS .I was not paid for the time travelling between clients,I wonder how many agencies would go bust if they had this extra cost.

ForestLilac · 12/02/2023 18:32

How about a care job in the nhs? Despite all their problems I think you’ll find the conditions better suited to you.

IsItBedtimeYetNope · 12/02/2023 18:34

Why are they cancelling? Are they even allowed to do that? Surely if they need care, they need care.

LIZS · 12/02/2023 18:36

The law changed a little while back to address travel time and nmw employees. www.gov.uk/minimum-wage-different-types-work

YANBU. When I did it we weren't paid travel time but were paid mileage (at way below the HMRC rate). But if clients cancelled on arrival we were paid for the length of the booked call. Are you not getting that?
Can you go home/to the office while you're waiting for your next call time? Can you/office contact the next client and see if they're ok with an earlier visit?

I am a home carer. I get paid for my travel and if a service user cancels with less than 48 hours notice, I still get paid. If a cancellation is unavoidable eg they are in hospital, I still get paid at the cost of my agency not the service user. I work for an amazing family business and appreciate that most care jobs are not like this!

I'm a care worker and I love my job so much. I've just handed in my notice as I can't take any more. I did a 16 hour shift with no breaks the other week for 11 hours pay. Today I've been forced to work whilst being extremely unwell. I'm so ill some clients refused to have me in their houses today! The highlight of my day was driving 8 miles to do one job that's pays just over a £5! Then driving 5 miles to the next job. I'm just done.

I HEAR all you carers who have been treated badly.Been there and never again. The agency only told me half of what it was really like.

Autumnalblooms · 13/02/2023 14:03

I am a community carer and my advice would be find an agency who actually value you. We get paid travel time ,wait time between calls if it is up to an hour, after that it is considered a break .My employer's are amazing ,my work is local amazing team of staff .It took me a long time though to actually leave my old care company as i had been there a long time and likewise thought the world of everyone. You deserve better .There are good companies out there ,
