No hot water but heating works

Hi, we have intermittent cold water in the kitchen and bathroom, but the heating works.

I have called a plumber who is coming mid-week but wanted to get MN’s view on what this possibly could be?

Andy thoughts welcome!

This happened to my boiler a while ago. It was the heat exchanger. It was replaced

Beneficialchampion2 · 12/02/2023 13:07

Could be two things, heat exchanger or diverter valve.

Diverter valve is more likely and a cheaper repair.

pishkashante · 12/02/2023 13:15

Thank you, hope it’s the diverter valve then.

Its a very old boiler, at least 30 years.

this happened to mine… there was limited pressure and needed topping up.. this is a condenser.

BorgQueen · 12/02/2023 13:19

Is it a combi?
Most likely is a stuck diverter valve that is stuck in the heating position.
Is there any water leaking ?

A diverter valve cartridge can be as little as £40 or as much as £200 for a complete unit, then £150 or so for 2-3 hours labour.

BorgQueen · 12/02/2023 13:22

Have you got a Hot water tank and is it on?

pishkashante · 12/02/2023 13:22

Yes it’s a combo, sorry.

Now you mention it, I did see a leak from the pipe out of the boiler coming out of the brick wall.

When the heating is running, what happens when you turn on a hot tap?

Same question for when the heating is off.

When my combi is low on pressure, the boiler does not work at all, no hot water or heating.

AllTheThingsIWantAreHere · 12/02/2023 14:09

It will
Be the diverter

AllTheThingsIWantAreHere · 12/02/2023 14:10

Unless you have your Emerson on 🤔

Same question for when the heating is off.

It’s the same situation, the water is intermittently hot and cold, whether the heating is on or off.

Happened to me, and my boiler wasn't nearly as old as yours. I was strongly advised to replace it. There comes a point where you're just throwing good money after bad, with all the repairs.

Beneficialchampion2 · 12/02/2023 15:11

Are you sure it's a combi boiler if 30 years old?

You don't have a hot water tank I'm assuming?

bringonyourwreckingball · 12/02/2023 15:31

That happened to mine, it was the heat exchanger. Not worth repairing (boiler was 14 years old)

AllTheThingsIWantAreHere · 12/02/2023 15:43

Aghhhhhh! Sorry I missed that it was a combo so no idea if it would be a diverted or not.
