I just want a nice flavoured squash - I used to love ribena, but it is grim now

So many have sweeteners - can anyone recommend an orange and mango - with no sweeteners (or at least point me in the direction of a nice one?!)

Are you sure it doesnt have stevia in it, all the other M&S squash have stevia in, they lie saying it is not an artificial sweetener but it stevia, is basically artificial.

Actually your bottle says "plant based sweetener" which is stevia and tastes just as nasty as the other artificial sweeteners

WonderingWanda · 11/02/2023 21:14

I hate sweeteners, such an artificial taste, so may drinks have them on now. I am pleased to read all the suggestions on here!

bestbefore · 11/02/2023 21:14

Snap @Heronwatcher - love their drinks!

Why? Sweeteners are perfectly safe and healthy. Bloody hell. Dramatics.

A - They taste disgusting.
B - They are not necessarily safe, most studies with that finding are sponsored by the sweetener industry.
C - Smoking was once considered good for you.
D - Some people prefer not to consume non natural foodstuffs.

Camdenish · 11/02/2023 21:20

Apparently Stevia is a natural sweetener it tastes awful, messes with my blood sugar and makes my stomach hurt, just like artificial sweeteners. I want sugar in a sugary drink.

I buy Arab Vimto from a local shop but have been known to get it delivered by Myjam in an emergency. very good customer service. I don’t drink much of it but I like to have a bottle in the house at all times. Just to note, this is the old skool Vimto and not the stuff you can buy in uk supermarkets which does have sweeteners in.

Asda do an Apple and Mango squash which is cheaper than Sainsbury’s.
Otherwise Belvoir, Bottlegreen and some other posh brands.
I’m trying to find a lime cordial I like as much as Belvoir but cheaper.

DuckonaBike · 11/02/2023 21:22

Yes, artificial sweeteners are the devil’s work and I won’t have them across the threshold.

More pragmatically, they taste horrible and give me a headache. I believe there’s some evidence they encourage weight gain too but can’t remember the details.

pretty sure most people eat a lot of ‘unnatural food stuffs’.

Silentmama · 11/02/2023 21:23

I don't care if they are healthy/safe.. they taste grim!

It's the after taste - blurgh!
If for example Ribena made old style drink and new style people would have choice (thanks for the Ribena alternative up thread I'll be waiting for lidls to have wait for scandi wee :) )

I love the Bottlegreen pomegranate and elderflower cordial. No sweeteners.

They just taste nasty. No point them being '''healthy" (which is debatable) if they taste horrible.

pizzaHeart · 11/02/2023 21:42

Tbh I just buy orange juice from Lidl in small packs and then dilute it.

For many artificial sweeteners are a major trigger for gut issues such as IBD.

Find your local Polish shop. They normally have a myriad of flavours.

Good call

Sweeteners taste really bitter to me. And they give me a headache. I'd much rather have a moderate amount of sugar.

FadoFado · 11/02/2023 21:47

Bottle Green do some nice ones. Summer Raspberry and I think the other one I like is Blackberry and Apple.

Chichz · 11/02/2023 21:48

I've been buying squash for a club at school and have been shocked at some of the ingredients - definitely work of the 'sugar tax' and I believe it's going to have a lot to answer for. I have sought out the actual sugar ones and won't give something to my pupils that I wouldn't give to my own son! (Apart from at someone else's party 😜.)

Thanks for suggestions too!

Actually there's evidence that sweeteners actually trick the liver into storing fat, so completely counter-productive. And they taste weird!

AdventFridgeOfShame · 11/02/2023 21:54

We should all keep up to date with the science
www.mdpi.com/2072-6643/14/21/4446

  1. Conclusions and Perspective
Notably, the effects of artificial sweeteners depend on individual differences, including the gut bacteria, and may increase blood glucose levels, promote atherosclerosis, and increase cardiovascular risk and total mortality. Therefore, the replacement of sugar with artificial sweeteners in patients should be monitored over time for changes in blood glucose and body weight as well as intake, and future guidance should be based on gut bacteria data (Figure 3). It should be noted, however, that the use of artificial sweeteners from an early age may lead to an insensitivity to sweetness, which may increase cardiovascular risk and total mortality.

M&S or Asda do them - I am very intolerant to sucralose so I stock up when I’m at either
