Stolen/missing bin

My black bin was emptied today by council. I’ve just got back home and it’s missing. Do I need to report this to the council and will I have to pay?

Your council website will have the answers.

Really not happy as my green bin was stolen from round the back of my house a few months ago and im not in the best position to be paying out to replace both bins

When ours disappeared the bin collectors had accidentally thrown it into the back of the lorry with all the rubbish! The council replaced it for us for free (as you'd expect them to!)

An elderly lady who lives opposite us stole our recycling bin. I say stole because she must notice the huge number taped on the side of it. It was 6 years ago and she still uses it to this day.

We just ordered a new one from the council website, didn't have to pay.

WhiteFire · 10/02/2023 20:03

My council you have to pay.

MaggieFS · 10/02/2023 20:06

Totally depends on your council. Have to pay with mine too.

CarrotCakeMuffins · 10/02/2023 20:06

When mine went missing several years ago, I had to report it to the police and get a crime number so that the local council would give me a replacement FOC. Around 1 year later the original bin reappeared (it had the house number painted on the side so I knew it was mine). No idea where it had been for that year...

AmyDudley · 10/02/2023 20:15

Mine get regularly stolen, ring the council to check it hasn't been mashed up by the bin lorry. If it ha been tolen rather than broken, in my area you need to phone the police non emergency (obviouly !) and get a crime number, they ill ak you thing like 'do you have any upicion ho might have tolen it?' do you feel unafe and a if you are being targeted? Do you ant a viit from victim upport? hich the police officer and I generally have a bit of a laugh over (but I imagine it could be cary for ome people)but they have to ak. Then report your crime number to the council and they hould give you afree one. If your area i anything like mine your tolen bin ill reappear 3 month thron onto the pavement later ith the lid mahed in and a half ared attempt to crape your number off it.

I LOVE that you have never asked her for it back. I wouldn't either Grin

sorry for complete gibberish - my computer is refusing to print several letters and I accidentally pressed post before I could correct with screen keyboard <sigh>

Spanielsarepainless · 10/02/2023 20:18

Our neighbour's disappeared into the chomping maw of the dustcart. While she watched! She had a new one...

Flymetothetoon · 10/02/2023 20:29

My brand new bin was nicked by a neighbour on bin day and I was left with their old smelly one. Next fortnight I was at the window and the second my new nicked bin was emptied I was out there like a greyhound from the trap to nick it back and painted our house name in huge fuck off letters on it there was no way the neighbour mistook my new bin for their smelly old one

MrNook · 10/02/2023 20:45

Just check your councils website? You don't have to pay where I am

Has someone stolen your S key as well as the ops bin? 😂

blippyissilly · 10/02/2023 21:14

This is why we leave our bins filthy. They'll never get stolen!

SantaBakula · 10/02/2023 21:18

If you can wait until the bins are due to be emptied next time , at night have a wander around your street to see if its been put out to be emptied the swipes it back and put it out just before the binmen are due. Or sit at front door hawk eyed in the morning and pounce when it's been emptied.

My council will replace recycling bins for free but it's about £40 for a new black one.

It may be worth you looking at places like B&Q and screwfix to see if you can buy one cheaper there.

AmyDudley · 10/02/2023 22:31

Has someone stolen your S key as well as the ops bin - yeah - and I want it back ! Grin
