To be upset about my teeth

Am I being unreadable to be crying about this ? Out of the blue yesterday I had very bad toothache booked in with an emergency dentist who told me I need two root canals on upper back molars and a wisdom removed. I was shocked I saw my dentist six months ago I had a filling done on the opposite side but that side wasn’t mentioned.
I knew one tooth needed work as I bit on a hoola hoop a few months ago and a bit of tooth snapped off.

I didn’t go the dentist as I fell pregnant and had a 12 week Miscarriage I just left it and not it’s infected and I’ve been in a lot of pain.
I had a root canal on a lower back molar years ago but lost that tooth in the end and I struggle with the dentist as I have benign positional vertigo so can’t be laid back for long periods or can have an attack which I get stuck with for weeks then end up housebound and these are top teeth which means I will have to tilt my head back which is my worst nightmare.

I’ve woken up crying and depressed I don’t want two back teeth out on one side next to each other I’m only 36 and if you didn’t know you would think I had lovely teeth nice straight and whiteish considering I used to smoke.

Gave up smoking a week ago and it’s made me want to smoke again because I just think wtf is the point now damage is done.
I had braces as a teen and they already took four of my teeth out then which I don’t think they should of done so I’m already short on teeth.
I want to cry but want rid of the pain of this tooth he said both are cracked I can only feel one crack but I can’t see because of where it is .
what will I do ? Root canals don’t Always work 😭😭 I’ve had the worst start to the year as it is 😪😪

I had 2 done long time ago, bot teeth lasted 10 yeas+, the one with a crown less than the one with filling.

I found that ultra soft but thick brushes are perfect. They are also more gentle on teeth overall. Maybe give some a try. Prople sometimes tend to think the harder brush, the better clean but hard toothbrushes can damage enamel.

I had root canal on my tooth (you go back for multiple appointments) and at one of the appointments he told me a crack had developed while he was drilling and the whole tooth would need to be removed.

If it’s cracked they take it out. But it doesn’t take as long as root canal.

Your smoking is likely the reason you’re losing teeth. If you continue to smoke you’ll loose the teeth on the other side - also all of your teeth will shift.

I hate going to the dentist too. I only go if I’m in pain - but I went very recently as I chipped my front tooth and needed emergency dental work.

The dentist ended up doing work that I had put off. I needed to be sedated - diazepam and the gas. I absolutely tripped out while I was in the chair. I was flying in a tunnel with flashing coloured lights. It was wonderful. Just ask for sedation. The dentist bill was over $1000 after insurance though.

I have had to get mouth guards for this reason. Nothing to do with hygiene it is all caused by grinding in my case.

I know smoking hasn’t helped in my case so I’m very annoyed at myself for doing it but my partner smokes more drinks more coffee and alcohol and hasn’t even had a filling so I don’t think it’s always just that as he’s got perfect teeth and their still white.
My mom doesn’t smoke or drink and has had loads of dental work too I think it’s genetic aswell.
Either way I just want this pain to end 😭😭😂

Whilst I sympathise you haven't really done yourself any favours by not looking after them. Dental treatment is free whilst you're pregnant partly because your teeth are more at risk. I'm no expert but I've never heard of anyone cracking a tooth on a hoolahoop! Then you left it to get infected. I think you just have to accept that they're gone.
I'm sorry to hear about your miscarriage but sounds like your head is in a better place now than it was. On a positive you've said you have straight white teeth, something many of us would like. You've also made a really significant life change by quitting smoking so this will benefit your teeth and your body and mind in general. Stick with this then start thinking about other positive things you can do in the future rather than focusing on the past

I feel your pain OP, I’d not been to the dentist since the virus & happily ignored all 6 month reminders. Then I began to get real painful ulcers where I could barely open my mouth. After much googling I feared mouth cancer. Upon further inspection I suspected a wizzy 🥹. I was so scared, then so happy when dentist said that they couldn’t take it out as it hadn’t properly come through yet. I’m hoping I’ll be dead by the time this happens. Good luck with the no smoking! I gave up 14 years ago, if I can do it anyone can.

Fluffyowl00 · 07/02/2023 21:30

In the short term: orajel and swig corsodyl mouthwash every 2 hours. Take ibuprofen for the inflammation.

Ask for sedation if possible and go for the root canals. I’ve had root canal treated teeth for 15 years with no problems.

No good dentist will advise you to go for an extraction or implant if the tooth can easily be saved.

Then get a mouth guard for grinding.

Don’t worry, within a day or two of the root canal you’ll feel back to normal.

Tooth pain is just the worst.

🙄
Sometimes tooth issues including weakness and being prone to needing fillings has not much to do with dental hygiene.
For example my issues stem from lots of antibiotics when young. It also affects colour so mine are stripy. Or genetical, or any other medical conditions. While people should always do their best, sometimes the best isn't enough.

I imagine if this was the case for OP she would have highlighted that herself.

Is this really about your teeth? I know you can't do head tilting and then there's the expense too but I'm sensing a lot of unfairness here. Miscarriage is unfair, repeated infections are not only unfair but prevent you from fully moving forward. Other people in your life can abuse their teeth with no ill effects yet here you are, doing everything you can and still, there are problems. Then there's the cig quitting on top of all that too. Quitting is HARD. Bloody hard. I am nearly five years cig free btw, best favour I ever did myself. Please keep going!

Anyway, I can see that everything must really suck right now. I have no decent advice to give that hasn't already been said, I just wanted to acknowledge how unjust things must seem to you and say well done for keeping off the ciggies.
