WIBU to be annoyed in this cafe?

Hoppinggreen · 06/02/2023 18:42

Went for lunch today at a local cafe. I was paying as a treat for my friend. Bill was about £30.
When I went to pay the person on the till made a mistake and over charged me by £10. It was actually a lot more complicated as she mixed up my bill with someone else then tried to add on someone’s takeaway but that was basically it.
After a lot of discussion between 2 staff members they said the only thing they could do was refund and charge me again. No problem I said.
So they did the refund and I said it hadn’t appeared back on my banking app to be told that I had to wait up to 10 days to get it. I was then expected to pay again.
I (calmly) said that I wasn’t happy about that as I would have paid £70 for a £30 lunch until the refund arrived. I was told there was no other alternative. I said again that I didn’t think this was reasonable. The staff member who made the mistake kept apologising and I said that it was a simple mistake and everyone made them so she really didn’t need to be upset about it. The other staff member said that I just needed to pay again and if I hadn’t received it in 10 days to call in.
There was a queue at this point so I said fine but I wasn’t happy about it. The staff member then told me that I had “upset” her colleague and was very short with me. I said again that I didn’t blame her for a simple mistake, it was the lack of resolution I was annoyed at. I did not raise my voice at any point and was very calm and measured. We left and I could hear the staff member telling her colleague she could come out now (she had vanished into the back as apparently she was too upset to deal with me) since I had gone. I left feeling as if I had done something wrong, honestly happy to be told I did
Was I unreasonable being annoyed at this? It won’t cause me any issue financially but I’m a bit miffed at being £40 out of pocket due to their mistake for up to 10 days. It might come earlier I know

Am I missing something here? The correct bill was £30 agreed by waitress. So why didn’t OP pay £30? The outlet can sort out the incorrect charge in their till afterwards. The customer is always right. Probably staff not received any customer attitude training, still if they want to run the business into the ground and all lose their jobs…….

Yes you're missing something here. OP paid £40 without realising that's what she was being charged.

Bekstar · 07/02/2023 19:38

YANBU there's nothing to stop them doing a partial refund to you of what they overcharged as opposed to recharging you and refunding whole amount. So why they did it this way I don't know fair enough if it was a warranty based item some warranties insist right amount is on receipt but with food there is absolutely no way they couldn't just refund what they had overcharged

WomanStanleyWoman2 · 07/02/2023 19:42

These “OMG of course they couldn’t give you a tenner out of the till, the till would be out!! It would cause huuuge accounting problems and the staff member would be fired!!” responses are hilarious. It’s ten quid! Do you really think one small discrepancy over the course of an entire tax year is going to throw things into total disarray? The manager was standing right there (complaining about how the OP had “upset” their useless assistant 🙄) - there was never going to be any confusion over where this mystery £10 went. The manager showed zero common or business sense here.

This is almost as ridiculous as the posters saying the police would be called in over a non-existent “theft”. But I think my favourite was the poster suggesting the OP should have waived the £10 and treated it as a 33% tip (in return for the kind of service Basil Fawlty would think was inept).

TheRealMBJ · 07/02/2023 20:06

You will get plenty of people saying you should understand the positing if the cafe.

BUT THEY ARE WRONG!

They made a mistake and overcharged you. (massively). You should be refunded immediately for the overpayment. If the overpayment amount took some time to process so be it, bit to expect you to foot the bill (even temporarily) for their mistake is not acceptable .

This is such a good example of the "computer says no" attitude we are all expected to accept. Towhich in is insane.

You had the funds to cover the original bill bit not necessarily the original plus the erroneous one. And it is utterly ridiculous to expect you as the customer to do so

hiyaKen · 07/02/2023 20:11

Why did you pay the bill in the first place? Wouldnt it have been easier to dispute the bill/ checl before paying?

SHE DIDNT CHECK BECAUSE SHE WAS DISTRACTED AND HAD ALREADY HAD TO CHALLENGE ANOTHER ISSUE

How many times does she have to say it?

But surely the normal process is that you have your bill rung up at the till, you pay and then the cashier gives you the receipt. The onus is then on you to check the receipt before you leave the premises in case of a dispute. By the time the OP has been handed the receipt, the mistaken amount has already been rung up and on checking the receipt the OP realises she’s been charged for someone else’s’ order.

OneTC · 07/02/2023 20:27

Do people honestly think that you get audited and HMRC on your back over a 10 discrepancy between cards and cash? 😅

Thinking2022 · 07/02/2023 20:31

this happened to our friend's daughter and she thought it was age discrimination as she is only 17. This was wagammas. It is clearly a practice and has to be stamped out asap. Complain in writing to the restaurant - why are you paying for a mistake? It happened to me recently and the staff gave an immediate refund and then charged correct amount.

About 15 years ago I went to a branch of Costa that had just opened with my 4 children and we had snacks and drinks. I was a bit stressed as my 2 youngest ( under 5) were being a bit difficult so I just put my card in and paid. I got to the table and looked at the receipt - £ 1650 ( or something close)! I rushed back to the till and they were very apologetic and refunded the money. I was told I'd get it back within 10 days. I then had to pay the correct amount. Thankfully we weren't as poor then and actually had that amount in the account- or not as it would have been declined.

This nearly happened to me in Costa as well but I'd been watching the total go up and up as the queue was moving so when I got to the front I told them they were really fucking their tills up. No idea what exactly they were doing or how they'd charged the people in the queue in front of me but they basically just seemed to be sub totalling and adding a new transaction on top 🤦

Wasn't 1600 but it was 400+

Rosscameasdoody · 07/02/2023 20:36

Does anyone have experience of a similar situation where there aren’t enough funds on the card to pay twice ? What happens then ? I would imagine most people don’t go into a cafe for lunch expecting to be paying £70.

Judgyjudgy · 07/02/2023 20:43

I'd be annoyed, but not as annoyed as OP and some of the people on this thread. You're getting the money back so not sure what the big deal is.
I'd be more annoyed at myself for not checking tbh!

They made it way more complicated than it had to be. All they had to do was refund you what you had been over charged, problem solved.
The staff member that got upset seems to have some issues with confrontation but they might also have other stuff going on that meant they were feeling more fragile that day.
Their colleague though is bang out of order & I’d have asked to speak to a manger about their attitude.
I worked in cafés for many years & they were unnecessarily rude to you which is unprofessional!
Hope you get your refund. 10days is usually the longest it will take to refund.

I was distracted by the fact that they had already tried to charge me for a different tables food and add a takeaway. I was also trying to say goodbye to my friend who was rushing off as her parking was about to expire - as was mine. But yes, I should have checked.
As for agreeing with the solution I was told that after 2 staff consulting on it for several minutes and people behind me wanting to pay that it was the only solution. I suppose I could have stood there arguing about it for a bit longer

You could've stepped aside to let the other people pay so you weren't holding up the queue. Also if they had tried to change you for a different table, then why didn't you check that would make me want to check even more. I can't help but think the pressure may have been part of the problem if they panicked so then didn't think through the optimum solution. You say you weren't being rude, but here you say you were arguing so I think they just wanted to get rid of you quirky hence the f up. I bet after you left and they had time to think about it they probably thought of another way they could've done it

Blossomtoes · 07/02/2023 20:57

Cafe staff fuck up but it’s all the customer’s fault. 🙄

Hoppinggreen · 07/02/2023 21:01

I didn’t say I was arguing- I said I COULD have stood there for a bit longer arguing about it.
I just said that I wasn’t happy about paying twice, there was no argument. I expressed my dissatisfaction with their solution

YANBU to be annoyed, but YABU to spend this much time and energy on it

TheObstinateHeadstrongGirl · 07/02/2023 21:11

Those telling the OP SIBU - was she just supposed to let it go because she didn’t notice she’d been overcharged?

curlyLJ · 07/02/2023 21:30

OP I think the biggest mistake here is not getting a receipt for the refund. Without it, it's going to be your word against their's.

Surely the easiest resolution would have been to give you a credit note or cakes to the value of £10, but they've assumed you have a he funds to be out of pocket until the refund arrives, which hopefully it will!

TheObstinateHeadstrongGirl · 07/02/2023 21:31

If I was overcharged by 25% then told “do you want some cakes instead of cash” they’d definitely be hiding from me after my response.

Why is it so hard to imagine a cashier just does their job and simply refunds a tenner?! Utterly ludicrous to suggest OP had to pay in full twice to rectify THEIR problem

shewhomustbeEbayed · 07/02/2023 22:12

I had this at the garage, was charged a larger amount ( person who had filled up after me on same pump ) despite me specifying the amount, I then had to pay my lower amount in addition and was then reimbursed the larger amount but it did take a few days.

ExistenceOptional · 07/02/2023 22:51

But not everyone can afford to do that.

Vergeofbreakdown23 · 07/02/2023 23:24

My mum was charged twice for fuel once - they said the payment hadn't gone through so had to do it again when in fact it had gone through, thus she was charged twice! It took almost 2 weeks to get her refund as its usually 10 working days!
It's not a good set up at all and the least they could've done was given you the over charge from the till - especially if the other person whose bill they added onto yours was paying by cash!!

Stewball01 · 08/02/2023 00:32

Couldn't the dopey Dora have cancelled the whole thing and started again? I don't understand about the £70? A very annoying business and I wouldn't have been so understanding.

Blueink · 08/02/2023 01:24

I wouldn’t have agreed to their suggestion to refund the whole amount and recharge, as normal to wait for the refund.

It was a bit late to do much after that, obviously they needed to charge you after the full refund had already been put through.

At least you said it doesn’t really affect you too much.
